Why do contrarians think this is better than the modern dune films?

That Spanish freak proved that the source material substance is too foreign for any audience so started designing a version based on style (that also proved unfilmable).

This version's style simply shits all over the Canadian's bland ugliness that pays no attention to style.

/tv/ still refuses to accept that the dune films were meteorically successful, widely loved, and are unironically masterpieces. I will however concede that zendaya's casting and chani's altered role was a catastrophic mistake and probably the single biggest flaw in the films, but the rest of it is so good that I can look past it. But yeah /tv/ is and always has been a contrarian board, in many ways the opposite equivalent of reddit, whereby reddit automatically loves [current thing] whilst teevee automatically hates it.
>>
>>224064958
I thought modern Dune ended with the second movie. Now they are doing a third? Does it really need to stretch out to three movies?
>>
So they can pretend to be 2smart4u by sucking off Lynch, even though they're both shit "adaptations".
>>
Lynch's Dune is arguably his worst film, but exhibits flashes of brilliance throughout. I've never seen the Villeneuve version, but I'd imagine it's pretentious modern slop, lauded by the midcult, which probably trades Lynch's elaborate production design and classical lighting for some brand of minimalist commercial sludge.
>>
>>224064958
For me it's the moment in the theater for the release when AJ was laughing uncontrollably when he realized how shitty Lynch's DUNE was.

Please. Jodorowsky isn't half the director Lynch was, and even though it was very flawed and compromised by studio interference, Lynch at least got his movie made. He should stand back.

>>224064958
I remember a lot of this film despite not having watched it in years
I don't really remember much of the new DUNC films (though I remember generally enjoying them)
The voice over parts of Original Dune is pretty bad though
>>
>>224064958
It´s not contrarianism, it´s an objective fact. The essence of epics is romanticism. The romanticism of an empire on a planet among the stars, the romanticism of a coven of space witches trying to control the universe, the romanticism of a child from another world that finds true destiny and belonging in Arrakis and becomes it´s messiah. That´s Lynch´s movie and it´s backed up by art design that really makes it look the part.
Villeneuve movie on the other hand is more...mundane. It lacks the magical and supernatural elements, it highlights the political machinations and paint the messianic dreams as no more than spice side effects, the bene gesserit as a cult ruled by political ambition rather than by magics and Paul himself as a political player that goes along with playing the role of the fake messiah for political ambition.

It is a common issue with movies of this age. Dredd, Nolan´s Batman, his Odyssey, Total Recall 2012 all feel more grounded, mundane and relatable to contemporary culture and less theatrical in nature than their older counterparts. This right here is the reason movies no longer feel timeless. There is no aim for transcendence or even recognizable identity. Lynch may have thought Dune is worst but even at his worst he is superior than Villeneuve at his best (albeit granted Dunc is not his best, 2049 is his best but i´m trying to make a point here)
>>
>>224064958
I really hate that they waste the Abomination line on Paul and not Alia. Paul is literally what they were trying to create While Alia is a freak child that shouldn't have survived and had the knowledge and experience of generations of Reverend mothers. It's dumb as fuck. Cutting her out of the movie makes no senese. Chani hating Paul is trash. The general costume and set and prop design is trash.

The original Dune suffered from trying or having to fit and explain a crazy world and social structure into a movie length experience. You can argue the sound devices are shit way to explain the weirding way or that t has nothing to do with the actual book version at all. But still I feel a decision made to fit the movies time constrictions.

So in all to me The first Dune movie falls short trying to fit massive scope into limited time. The new Dune movies are shit decisions or just outright "fuck this, I want to do something different, because".

At this point I'm fucking checked out of this movie. Are you fucking kidding me right now? Seriously? Get to the freaking movie you motherfuckers! Who does this Lynch dude even think he is? Then some fucking Giant Slug thing with hands and feet starts talking about 2 more planets. Fucking Ix and how they have better machines than some other planet Richese. None of that was in the exposition dumps! You've already thrown fucking 6 planets and 5 factions at us and the movie barely even fucking started!

I see now why the critics call the source material “notoriously impenetrable” and why book readers who have managed to digest it often settle into a palpable smugness over that achievement.

And they are saying how much of the story is devoted to sci-fi bureaucracy. Which elites have import/export rights in which provinces? What are the specific bylaws governing a leadership transition? If someone wants to lodge a complaint, which regulatory body must they contact?

Like hella come on man! I didn't fucking sign up to play a session of fucking Twilight Imperium! I just wanted to sit back and watch a comfy movie and now I'm upset and came here to rant about it because it is not going to fucking happen! You told me Lynch Dune was fucking kino, you motherfuckers you! Is there a way to watch this without the massive exposition dumps? Also please no smug BookBros takes. We get it, the text is notoriously impenetrable and you have a grasp on one of the most difficult Sci-Fi stories of all time. Don't want to hear it anymore.

>>224067997
Sicario is his only enjoyable film. Prisoners has some ok ideas. Incendies is a tryhard Rube Goldberg story born from the dross of contemporary theatre. Dunc is an adaptation devoid of imagination and wonder and blade runner is as unnecessary and subversive as Amazon's RoP. It sucks.

Its subversive because it subverts the narrative of the original you /pol/baiting retard. The novel and film leave an open ended narrative, but Villenueve dains to answer that question for plot reasons and the proceeds to ask the same question with a hundred times as much bwaaah sounds and less entertaining noir, bland cgi and a hackneyed le resistance storyline.

Actually, initially I thought the modern Dune films were better for being closer to the books.

However, now that stronk black woman Liet-Kynes has turned into Chani leading an atheist Fremen faction that lives on the south side of Arrakis who openly question Paul as the Lisan al-Gaib to the full blown fanfiction bullshit in the upcoming third movie, the new Dune movies change just as much shit as the old David Lynch Dune movies while being considerably less interesting while doing it.

So, yes. The old Dune movie is actually better.

The Spicediver edit is so much closer to the vibes that Dune should have compared to the modern films. The soundtrack, the acting, the sets, the costumes, are all kino in the 1984 version. Its only big flaw, and its a fatal flaw, is that it is forced to tell the whole Dune story in a 2 hour movie. Still, the 1984 gets so much right, while the modern stuff gets so much wrong.

Read the book when I was a teen, don't remember a thing from it.
Saw the new movies with my dad in theatres.
Finally watched the original a few years ago.
I have no bone in this fight, I don't care about the politics. However, the original made me feel things the new one didn't. The sets were awe inspiring and felt so much more alive.
I don't care if the new movies are more true to the book. The original made a world I wanted to actually visit and dream of. I felt nothing 5 minutes after the I finished the new ones.
Call me a contrarian but my heart is honest and I will follow it.

But my point is, points are the weirding module fucking ugly, it doesn't seem like the kind of thing designed to sell to kids. And it's use is not a laser sword or laser gun from the future or from outer space but a device that manipulates and amplifies sound waves to mainly do internal damage or set off chain reactions that explode things. You can't easily translate the concept of sound waves exciting atoms into rupturing vital organs and making things spontaneously combust into the equivalent of a Nerf gun for a kid.

The new Dune films try too hard to be cool. You can tell by the way they shoot certain scenes. They’re all the male equivalent of girlboss moments when Paul has his “cool moments” like the gom jabbar, ”I’m pointing the way” and “long live the fighters”

The entire premise of dune 3 is the chant, which is cool but it’s not Dune. The color palette sucks ass and chani is extremely unlikable to anyone that doesn’t live in a blue city

Lynches dune however does not try to be cool. It tries to be dune, it doesn’t shy away from the bizarre, and the camp. Paul has cool moments but it’s not about being cool it’s just the story. When he shouts long live the fighters it fills you with emotion, not “dude that’s epic” like in villenueves.

As a few closing remarks I’d also say that there’s magic in Lynches dune that just isn’t there in Villenueves. What’s the point in him taking the water of life in dunc? His eyes go blue and he becomes a bit robotic. He almost jobs to Feyd Rautha still, and the sole reason he gets away with his ascension is because he’s threatening to destroy all spice.
In Lynches dune he feels like a Kwizats Haderach, whatever the fuck that is. He’s a being beyond everyone around him. The only reason he comes close to losing to Feyd is because he plays completely fair, he uses the voice on Feyds corpse immediately after to show just how easy he could’ve ended him if he chose to.

Lastly i think 1984 dune has one of the greatest father son relationships on the silver screen ever. When you watch that as a boy or man, you think of your father when he screams to the heavens that the sleeper has awakened, you think of how you long for your dad to be able to die knowing you have become the man he thought you could be. In DUNC Paul’s dad is just Oscar Isaac in a beard. They might as well just be two random characters that share screen time
>>
>>224071696
Just calling people "pretentious" for liking a movie is not going to warrant a better, more thoughtful response.
>>
The problem with Nune (new dune) and its core is that they’re clearly written for modern audiences with modern tastes and palettes while Lynches dune was made in the best decade of a sci-fi like Dune.
NUNE could have literally been any other space movie made in the last decade. It’s pure spectacle big screen slop. Every scene every plot point every character motivation is set to have either an immediate or soon approaching WOWSOCOOL payoff.
It’s the same shit that happened to game of thrones after season 3 or arguably as soon as season 2 where almost every scene was rewritten to be a quip battle

>>224064958
I'm a DUNC hater, but I don't think the Lynch Dune is the better film. Not sure I think DUNCs are objectively better either, though.

What I do think is that Dune 84 has things in it you won't see or hear in anything else; whilst DUNC has things I've seen in video games and vg concept art for 20 years. If I had never seen Dune 84 I'd be missing out on imagery, concepts and music because there's nothing else like it. If I'd never seen DUNC I would have completely the same knowledge about everything; I even already knew Zendaya was mid and Villeneuve was capable of boreslop.
Also DUNC is simply overrated.
So after all this I'd prefer to rewatch 84 and tell people about it rather than parrot DUNC slop again.

I also think Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best movies of the 2010's. So I'm not even a Villeneuve hater.

To me it just comes down to this

A fantasy/sci-fi movie or book needs to instill emotion and immersion and a sense of longing for this fantastical world that doesn’t exist.
talking about Camelot, Conan the Barbarian, Dune84, the original Star Wars, Troy to an extent, Lord of the Rings
Compare that to new movies that tackle the same genre and might look cool but doesn’t give a lasting impression whatsoever. the odyssey, King Arthur legend of the sword, DUNC, valerian, rebel moon.

I guess the tldr could be that Lynch takes you on a journey into another world and Villenueve takes you on a theme park ride

Bro its literally a book, it has the next word and the next word right there. You just read it. Call me smug but you sound like a fucking retard to me. The book is literally a fucking straightforward explanation of itself in English words there is nothing to penetrate, there is no difficulty in digesting it, its just word word word and you read them like you read these ones. You have built layers of bullshit blaming others for vague behavioral crimes because its an easy on-the-side recreational activitiy for other people to read a science fiction fantasy book whereas to you it simply MUST BE a pompous display of feigned intellectualism by people STRUGGLING to WORK to DIGEST le complicated word words.

To be fair it’s a lot harder to bring books like Dune and Speaker for the Dead, that have a lot of internal dialogue and non-visuals. And not-so overly visualized set pieces. Than say Lord of the rings that while very very heavy is extremely detailed in everything and easy themes to understand, fear hope, evil good. dune was, as all good scifi is, at once about a world utterly alien to us and about themes utterly dear to us. the plot is drawn from the war of the roses, similar to GoT. the spice is an analogue for oil. but to say these reductive things does not capture how Herbert was able to combine these inspirations into something singular. think of all the stuff dune has taught us:

walk without rhythm, and you won't attract the worm
the slow blade pieces the shield
the litany against fear
the idea that one can see or feel one's purpose and find it "terrible"
the idea of the sardaukar and the jihadi fremen being two sides of the same coin

it all comes together. It's a dream, like most of lynch's work, but with internal consistency. it doesn't just have one message.

I feel like blade runner 2049 enjoyers are memory holing the part where the whole thrust of the movie is to unearth aged Harrison Ford who is just so unnecessary. hey remember Trinity? she's in this. the whole thing is unnecessary. It's a sequel to a film that doesn't really ask any questions that weren't asked better by the original. i will watch it because i am starved for scifi and i want it to be good. but it isnt.

the new dune, desu i can't even remember if i watched it. i think i did when it came out? I remember a lot of BWOOOM and everything being color graded all to mexico.

Villeneuve, the guy is an ok cinematographer, not a good director. but what should we be comparing him to? that's the thing! I don't blame people for wanting there to have been good movies in the last decade. but there just... aren't too many... something shifted. the foundation cracked. the environment no longer selects for good, the profit motive is no longer aligned, if it ever was, or maybe we're just so much better at chasing it to the exclusion of everything else. so, more villeneuve, more nolan, that's what you get.
>>
you don't like zendaya, well, too bad, we're not bringing up any other actresses. i mean look at her trajectory, her acting experience is from the disney channel, what do you expect? she's doing her best. is her range kind of limited, yeah but people like that now. they like rdj or whoever to just walk on set and be themselves. they like when the SNL cast "cracks", they watch compilations of it. don't get me started with anime, where guys who spend all day playing videogames watch animes about guys being isekai'd into some kind of a fuckin videogame.

another poster said "mundane". i think that's the right word. think about how much money it cost to make something so expected, so inoffensive. you want to criticize the sequel for telling a story about strong female character who knows better leads her people to victory? we don't know how to tell any other story now man. maybe the trump derangement syndrome is real in that it gets people so used to being right so easily that they cant imagine being put in a situation where they have to think to figure out whether things are good or bad. that kind of situation scares them. it cannot exist. it must be written out.

>cast chosen with love instead of nepo hires and agenda pushing
>clearly setting up for an in-depth series, gets axed, then quickly wrapped up
>there's 1 nigger in the movie and it's a bit part
>+1 point for random pug

It's not perfect but the sheer amount of effort they put into making it real way outclasses the new green screen movie. They take a couple liberties with the plot, which almost always detracts. The 2nd half of the movie feels like whiplash because it spends the first hour building everything up in detail and then rushes to a conclusion. Chani casting wasn't great and that whole subplot was literally just a voice over, which was weird.
I liked seeing the pug, the cat etc because to me it seems like people brought their pets on set and they just found a way to stick them in the movie for posterity, which is soulful.

Part 2 is vastly better than Part 1 but it still lacks the SOVL of Dune 84'.

The problem with Dunc Pat 2 is that its simply too on the nose with its storytelling and leaves no room for interpretation. Like from a purely technical filmmaking standpoint it blows Part 1 out of the water. But the way every it was made and the way every performance plays out its like it was literally made for midwits to keep up.

Dunc Part 2 literally a case of what you see is what you get and literally nothing more. Which is why nobody talks about it and it disappeared from the conversation as soon as its run ended.

Idk man I dig the fact that it was such a visual powerhouse. A lot of times I feel like the strength of complexity of a story in a film isn't even as important as creating haunting imagery. It stuck with me big time because it's incredibly visceral and the comedy was also extremely on-point.
>>
>>224074271
I did.

My entire Jr. High went to see Dune 84' at the local theater because that's what everybody did on Fraday's back then. The problem was that it was too deep for a bunch of middleschoolers and noobody got it. But as I got older and watched it multiple times it ended up in my all time top ten and I watch at least once about every other year.
>>
>>224074281
Bravo Lynch
>>
>>224074287
>isn't even as important as creating haunting imagery

Haunting imagery is nothing without depth. The whole thing with minimalist imagery is that your mind wants to fill in the gaps. That is where the depth is and that is what makes it interesting. With Dunc Part 2 its all there spelled out for you even in the performances. There is nothing to ponder or think about. Its all just there on the screen. Which makes it boring long term and hurts conversation and rewatchability.

For example the way Javier Bardem's Stilgar is such a caricature of a religious zealot. Its so two dimensional and over the top. It just takes away all depth to the character. Pretty much the whole movie is like that with its characters.
>>
>>224074347
maybe I'm blessed as a reader... I was enjoying the member berries it was giving me from reading the book, but without needing to be shifting in my seat wondering when something cool was going to happen which was most of Part 1

Also I can accept riffing with the story. Halleck, Stilgar, Rabban, Rautha, all of them were funny in their own ways. Stilgar wasn't aware of the fact that to an audience that expects dignity and decorum among respected figures in fiction that he stood out as a rube of sorts... it's a dimension of the character that Herbert took in a more serious direction and while he was certainly a daunting character in the books he was never one I wanted to get particularly close to.
>>
>>224074347
What are some examples of the masterful, ambiguous, complex depth Lynch introduced in his adaptation that isn't present in Villeneuve's?
>>
>>224074397
>Define depth

I don't answer woke questions.
>>
>>224074397
I'll play Devil's Advocate as the person he was responding to: Lynch is far more faithful to the source material. However, it was dweeby and if I wanted that exposition I'd turn to Herbert's stellar prose first and foremost. At least when I read the book I can render my own sense of awe at what I'm reading and give it proper imagery... while Lynch nailed several aspects in ways I actually found haunting (The Navigator, the first sandride--which does ride the coattails of the soundtrack quite hard, the preborn, the Emperor, mentats) it was a little too extremely of its era to have lasting impact on the way I pictured things to be. Villeneuve communicates that same sense of awe not through directly cribbed dialogue but through extremely powerful set pieces and action scenes... the way he depicts how 10,000 years in the future things seem archaic on the surface while actually being incredibly advanced is super compelling. His use of lighting is very close to how I actually picture the world of Dune. The TV series was also great at this, though at the whims of a noticeably lesser budget.
>>
>>224074460
>the way he depicts how 10,000 years in the future things seem archaic on the surface while actually being incredibly advanced

Wrong. Dunc's world is pure future minimalism. The way Dune 84' depicts retro aesthetics with future technology blows the Dunc movies out of the water.

As far as the performances for Dund 2 being too on the nose and leaving no room for interpretation thus making it boring when it comes to thinking about it long term after the theater I will give you another example. The way Rebecca Ferguson plays Lady Jessica in Dunc Part 2 was one thousand percent on the nose bordering on a two dimensional characature. Like IRL people that are being manipulative don't make it that obvious but in Dunc part 2 it borders on mustache twirling it was so obvious and on the nose that she was being manipulative. Like it made you wonder how in the world the Fremen were buying it the way she was being was so over the top and cartoonish when it comes to being so obviously manipulative.

The performance was so on the nose it leaves no room for introspection and interpretation. What you see is what you get. Which again makes it boring to think about long term because really there isn't much to think about. its all right there and obvious. Like Netflix repeating dialogue so the audience can keep up but in the form of a performance and personality. Just make it super obvious so people can keep up.

My own theory is that it comes from the artists experience making it and whether the experience was good or bad. Like how many times have you seen actors talk about how the production was an absolute joy to make and everyone got along. Then you see the movie and its absolute dogshit. Its not totally untrue to say that great art comes from suffering. Like G.L. almost died making Star Wars. Apocalypse now was an absolute disaster of a production. Dune 84' was a horrible experience for Lynch with is why he doesn't think fondly of it.

>>
>>224075493
The point was about overcoming friction during the production whether physical friction like a hurricane or a heart attack or whether or not people get along. Great art often comes from friction and overcoming struggle. Not merely toxic positivity where everybody maximizes for the smoothest production ever. Struggle like fighting with the studio, shooting on film rather than digital, or shooting on location rather than on set. There are tons of examples where the production and overall experience was bad for key players involved but the end result turned out great and timeless.

>>
>>224075735
Not my point.

Production hell is often a sign that the script is bad. Which is why it hasn't been greenlit into full production yet. An overly smooth production often means that a lot of compromises were made in order to keep the production smooth instead of maximizing for quality or creative vision. Another example of a tempestuous production creating timeless greatness was The Abyss. The actors described the production as miserable and hellish where they flat out wanted to quit at times.

OTOH look at the frictionless Avaslop the same guy keeps pumping out with zero cultural impact.

Vs eating at a Michelin restaurant where everything is razzle dazzle but lacks any soul whatsoever

Spicediver Cut is closest we're ever, or so far, gonna get to the Director's Cut of Lynch's Dune.

>*While Lynch never specifically refers to the new cut in these early 80s interviews as a “director’s cut” — the term had not yet become formally associated with the post-theatrical video version preferred by the director over the theatrical release — I will be terming it as such from this point forward.

>The earliest source I’ve found on this is a Variety article by Richard Gold. According to it, Lynch was somewhat disappointed with how Universal promoted Dune at the time it came out in theaters and was now crediting home video with improving the film’s reception. This, in addition to his feeling that the theatrical version simply wasn’t long enough, was a rationale behind his interest in releasing a longer cut.

>“Lynch feels subsequent homevideo exposure for “ Dune “ has resulted in the film “getting a better reputation,” and he also believes the 140-minute running time was not sufficient to do justice to the story. He reveals serious plans are in the works to release a four-hour videocassette version of “ Dune,” which will present a radically different version of the film, he says.”

>"The rough cut of Dune without post-production effects ran over four hours long, but Lynch's intended cut of the film (as reflected in the seventh and final draft of the script) was almost three hours long. Universal and the film's financiers expected a standard, two-hour cut of the film. Dino De Laurentiis, his daughter Raffaella and Lynch excised numerous scenes, filmed new scenes that simplified or concentrated plot elements and added voice-over narrations, plus a new introduction by Virginia Madsen. Contrary to rumor, Lynch made no other version besides the theatrical cut. A television version was aired in 1988 in two parts totaling 186 minutes; it replaced Princess Irulan's opening monologue with a much longer description of the setting that used concept art stills. Lynch disavowed this version and had his name removed from the credits, Alan Smithee being credited instead. This version (without recap and second credit roll) has occasionally been released on DVD as Dune: Extended Edition. Several longer versions have been spliced together. Although Universal has approached Lynch for a possible director's cut, Lynch has declined every offer and prefers not to discuss Dune in interviews."

It is such a shame the TV cut they made behind Lynch's back essentially killed his desire to make a real director's cut. Not until the final years of his life he was again showing interest in doing it, but I guess no one at Universal or de Laurentiis estate were interested in it.

>AVC: Some notable filmmakers have returned to their works years later with re-edits, because just as a viewer’s relationship to a piece of art can change over time, so too can a creator’s. Was a new narrative cut something you ever considered with Inland Empire?
>DL: No. But Dune—people have said, “Don’t you want to go back and fiddle with Dune?” And I was so depressed and sickened by it, you know? I want to say, I loved everybody that I worked with; they were so fantastic. I loved all the actors; I loved the crew; I loved working in Mexico; I loved everything except that I didn’t have final cut. And I even loved Dino [De Laurentiis], who wouldn’t give me what I wanted [laughs]. And Raffaella, the producer, who was his daughter—I loved her. But the thing was a horrible sadness and failure to me, and if I could go back in I’ve thought, well, maybe I would on that one go back in.

>AVC: Really?
>DL: Yeah, but I mean, nobody’s…it’s not going to happen.

>AVC: Well that’s interesting, because in the past you were always much less open to it.
>David Lynch: Yeah, I wanted to walk away. I always say, and it’s true, that with Dune, I sold out before I finished. It’s not like there’s a bunch of gold in the vaults waiting to be cut and put back together. It’s like, early on I knew what Dino wanted and what I could get away with and what I couldn’t. And so I started selling out, and it’s a sad, sad, pathetic, ridiculous story. But I would like to see what is there. I can’t remember, that’s the weird thing [laughs]. I can’t remember. And so it might be interesting—there could be something there. But I don’t think it’s a silk purse. I know it’s a sow’s ear.

>they are pretentious. this movie is shit and the new ones are infinitely better
You don't know what words mean. The original film is not at all pretentious, it's not trying to be anything more than a movie. Same as the villetardo attempt, the problem with Dunc is that it's without style, substance, courage or taste and as of the third movie now without even legitimacy.

>>224064958
On the basic level, it actually feels + works like 2 completely different houses hate each other's guts and have their own distinctive CULTURES + personalities (parade of freaks). It's a hodge podge of existing genres and archetypes, while DUNC tries to do something "nu for current times" that amounts no more than good VFX + press tours. The spaceship design in HOPE is light years more creative + detailed than DUNC. EMbarrassing!

Yes.
>Upon completion, the rough cut, without post-production effects, ran over four hours long. David Lynch's intended cut (as reflected in the seventh and final draft of the script) was almost three hours long. However, Universal Pictures and the movie's financiers expected a standard, two-hour cut. To reduce the run time, Dino De Laurentiis, Raffaella De Laurentiis, and Lynch had to excise numerous scenes, film new scenes that simplified or concentrated plot elements, add voice-over narrations, and film a new introduction by Virginia Madsen. Both Lynch and Dino De Laurentiis later admitted that the heavy editing was very detrimental to the finished film.

Lynch's Dune is very, very flawed, but it had flair and soul. Villeneuve's is technically impressive, but ultimately bland and soulless. Neither one, taken as a whole, is a good adaptation, but Lynch's at least has its moments of brilliance.

dr who was always shit though, it was famous in fact for being ridiculous, cheap and comical. when it was remade in the 2000s as a high budget slick thing it was pretty weird, considering the wobbly sets and endless jokes of daleks on stairs firing their invisible spark guns at walls.

I also think Lynch's design/conception for the Guild Navigators is better. Even though it's "evolution" they're regressing physically into a more embryonic form (that is also more like the sand worms, yes), plus they actually have a big ol noggin that suggests expanded brain volume and therefore capacity.
