>Stephen King has been quoted as saying that although Kubrick made a film with memorable imagery, it was poor as an adaptation and that it is the only adaptation of his novels that he could "remember hating".>King expressed disappointment that some themes, such as the disintegration of family and the dangers of alcoholism, are less present in the film. King also viewed the casting of Nicholson as a mistake, arguing it would result in a rapid realization among audiences that Jack would go insane, due to Nicholson's famous role as Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.>In an interview with the BBC, King criticized Kubrick's Wendy, stating that she is "basically just there to scream and be stupid, and that's not the woman that I wrote about.">King later criticized the film and Kubrick as a director: "Parts of the film are chilling, charged with a relentlessly claustrophobic terror, but others fall flat. Not that religion has to be involved in horror, but a visceral skeptic such as Kubrick just couldn't grasp the sheer inhuman evil of the Overlook Hotel. So he looked, instead, for evil in the characters and made the film into a domestic tragedy with only vaguely supernatural overtones. That was the basic flaw: because he couldn't believe, he couldn't make the film believable to others. What's basically wrong with Kubrick's version of The Shining is that it's a film by a man who thinks too much and feels too little; and that's why, for all its virtuoso effects, it never gets you by the throat and hangs on the way real horror should."
>>224067989Nicholson didn't go insane in cuckoo's nest

King is very amateurish as a writer and pumped out so much slop. The barely-literates of America were able to read him because of his knuckle dragging prose and eventually this made king somewhat popular and then Kubrick caught wind and elevated one story to actual kino and that launched King’s status. He’s literally like every other snake oil grifter in America - market to the lowest common denominator and pump out so much garbage until you get lucky with someone rich or talented throwing you a bone and giving you higher status by association.

>>224067989I like a lot of King's work but The Shining is probably the worst book of his that I've read. Kubrick took the basic idea of it and made it great. Honestly the only thing wrong with Kubrick's adaptation is that the supernatural stuff that is there just feels like a weird tacked on afterthought because he does downplay it so much, I'd almost say he should have written it out altogether. But it's a great movie anyway.
>>224067989>Not that religion has to be involved in horror, but a visceral skeptic such as Kubrick just couldn't grasp the sheer inhuman evil of the Overlook Hotel. So he looked, instead, for evil in the characters and made the film into a domestic tragedy with only vaguely supernatural overtones.I don't agree with this as at all. The existence of ghosts and the evil embodiment of the hotel proves that at least from an artistic point of view, Kubrick embraced supernatural stuff. The domestic tragedy was more in King's book added with alcoholism. Kubrick was making a 2 hour movie, he made the right calls.
he was mad because the shining was his most personal book and kubrick didn’t give a shit about his insight into making it
>>224067989Stephen King also wrote a child gang bang scene into a book about a killer clown.
Basically King did not realize he was obviously writing a book about an alcoholic that resents his family since most his leads are stand-ins for himself; despite the half-assed redemption at the end. Kubrick saw it right away like anyone with two brain cells to rub together and it triggers King to no end
I only read the book and found it pretty meh.

>>224072755You don't sound like you've read shit. His whole thing is basically, read a shit ton, write a shit ton, pay attention to shit going on around you. Also he just loves schlocky b-movies. The reason his books are lauded is because he takes those b-movie premises and just injects modern and realistic dialogs and prose. Books have the space for that and it gives the stories a novel feel. The reason most of his movies suck is because b-movie directors adapt them and strip out all the stuff he adds to the story to make the characters and situations feel more real. Even Kubrick did that shit with the guy in the dog suit. It makes for a stunning visual because he's a master of visual storytelling, but it works without all of King's backstory because the perverse sexual angle is only hinted at and not explicitly shown. In the book King didn't even do it that well, the dog guy actually overtly propositions Danny.

There's many examples but I'm thinking of Thinner were the MC knows a judge who once got drunk and grabbed the MC's wife's tit at a party. >>224068223The novel is King's attempt at portraying himself as a good guy, in the novel Jack is a good guy who only becomes abusive because of alcohol, feels remorse after doing something bad, his wife is le stronk independent wahman and willingly stays with him because she believes in his inner goodness, neither his wife or his child are afraid of him, and in the end Jack redeems himself and sacrifices himself to save his family. The novel puts all the blame on the alcohol and none on the man.The film takes the exact opposite stance, it states that the alcohol is nothing but a scapegoat, that Jack is simply an abusive piece of shit by nature, his wife is only still there because she's battered, fears him and fears his reaction if she tried to leave so she's learned to badly cope. Jack with his comment on cannibalism and mistreatment of Wendy is shown from the start to be evil, and he keeps justifying himself to Lloyd in the bar instead of admitting any fault, he keeps stating how it wasn't. Jack ends up dying in a pathetic manner after trying to kill his family, no redemption, no regrets. The novel is the alcoholic justifying himself and seeing himself in the best possible light, the film is how everyone else actually sees the alcoholic It's a very ugly image that of course King could never accept, and his comment on how movie Wendy is "misogynistic" when she's an accurate representation of a battered wife who only finds a spine whenever her child is threatened, comes from the fact he doesn't want to admit he could ever turn his wife into this, no, if his wife is there it's not because she fears his reaction to her leaving, it's because she loves him and sees the inherent good in him.

>>224067989I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Horror/Sci Fi writer Stephen King was found dead in his Maine home this morning. There weren't any more details. >>224067989Kubrick couldn't grasp the sheer inhuman evil of the Overlook Hotel
Kubrick saw Eraserhead and was fell in love with it, and tried to poorly imitate David Lynch. That's all, it's subversive for the sake of it mostly. Like, 'hey, let's kill the black man for no reason other than people know Danny and Wendy meet him again at the end of the book'

>>224071237Based Kubrick
>>224070339HOLY KEK. cannot unsee. motherfucker is the lorax
Kubrick is vastly overrated, and so is King. But I enjoy King, whereas I have rarely enjoyed Kubrick. The Shining is OK I guess, but it's more of a psychological horror film, whereas the book makes it clear the Hotel itself is an entity trying to add people to it's collection. It's a supernatural horror story in every way. Kubrick had to mute a lot of the supernatural elements because he had no way to depict them. His use of actors made it unclear if the ghosts are actual ghosts or just Jack's mind melting. In the book there's a whole sequence where the topiary animals come to live, it's fucking wild.
fuck king
>>224072098He wrote all of this before the MCU slop. If anything it could be argued he inspired it.>The Dark Tower VII published 2004>Iron Man debuts 2008
Kubrick correctly identified the writer as Stephen Kings self-insert and the "evil" of Overlook Hotel as Kings flimsy excuse for doing cocaine and downing booze in the basement for days on end to fuel his writing benders while his family life disintegrated around him. The Shining was a personal boom to King, and Kubrick cut through the metaphors and held a mirror up to who King truly was. He still hasn't recovered of proved Kubrick wrong.
>>224067989im not reading all thatall I know is that he's a deranged leftist who can put a couple of words together and that's iteverything he "writes" can be improved upon by any retardhe's just an "ideas guy"

>>224071634As much as I enjoy clowning on King, this is probably it. He hates Christine as well, which from what I remember is a pretty faithful adaptation without all the trademark King bloat.
>>224090477What a maroon. Christine is great.
>>224068282I always loved that he looks like an actual serial killer.
>>224077772King has one trick he’s repeated in pretty much every novel outside of the Dark Tower series.>first half of novel: dollar general Steinbeck - thoroughly characterise the inhabitants of some quaint backwater town through a subverted lens of nostalgic Americana>second half of novel: something straight out of a bad B-movie or lesser EC horror comic materialises to terrorise those characters, e.g. vampires, a haunted carThe situation is absurd but the reader has become attached to the characters and may feel some tension from their impending peril. It’s similar to William Gibson’s entire writing style being a more accessible riff on Pynchon.
>>224090569https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisey's_StoryThis is a pretty good novel without the stupid monster tropes.
>>224085337>change the definition of deportation>deportations increase, disarm critics of border security and fool retards like you>still allow 'asylum seekers' in to the country with a court date years later You have the understanding of a child or a redditor

>>224077319Great post. But The Shining is still a rubbish movie.I have no clue why it's revered like some sort of master piece. The cartoony frozen guy at the end alone should disqualify it completely.

>>224071634it's clear his complaints about The Shining are political/philosophical in nature. He criticized the wife for being too meek, and reduced her performance to "being dumb and screaming a lot". That says it all right there. He didn't want it to be about this family and resents their performances as a result. He wanted meta commentary about men are evil and women are brave and strong and the house that hosts it all is evil as well for allowing it to happen. It's naked feminism and fist-shaking at the sky for the its cosmic indifference.
Where did he peak?
>>224091421If King had his way Dick would've been giving us anti-white speeches.
>>224091409Trolling? Jack shows genuine remorse for his actions and true love for his family in the book. Do you see this in the movie?
>>224068805i just read Rage and honestly i can see why he prefers it out of print. not because of the school shooting aspect, because the whole thing just fuckin sucks. it reads like a retarded lord of the flies. QRD if anyone cares, in Rage a high schooler brings a gun to school and kills two teachers then takes the class hostage and starts spewing about his shitty childhood, only the other kids are totally into it and think it's awesome as the cops surround the building. the all american jock kid is the only one who goes against it and the other students beat him into a catatonic retard state right before the shooter lets everyone leave the building peacefully. it was found in a few IRL school shooter lockers so he let it run out of print, which also demonstrates how retarded school shooters are if they found that tripe insightful. i dont even hate King entirely, IT and the stand and four past midnight are genuinely fantastic fiction, but he misses often and misses big
>>224068282It's a guy in a suit.
>>224067989I´ve read few of King´s books and he has a very recognizable style. Most of his stories are slow paced and focused on building up until tension bursts and then things go to shit real fast. I´ve not read the shining though so i wouldn´t know if that´s the same but i did watch the movie and Doctor Sleep and can say that the later has more in common with how he usually writes things. I don´t necessarily see Kubrick´s Shining as he does though, the things he complains about are understandable. Kubrick and Nicholson were obviously brought in to bring in the more casual audiences that may not care for King´s book but would for either of them. Movies do that all the time, it´s part of the deal.
>>224091539Well, he started writing it high school, so it comes off as him being a bullied, disgruntled student who had one too many swirlies from the quarterback.>what if i was a cool guy who killed my teachers and my bully and everyone clapped>also i can't be killed no matter how many times i'm shot and i don't go to jail because i'm cool
>>224086151Yeah Anne Rice is still big with teens, I saw my cousin's daughters all reading her last Christmas, Barker was more relevant in the 90s imo
Is Trump letting furries across the border?
>>224091434Nowhere
>>224085427It's a character from the novel. He's the furry sex slave of one of the hotel's previous owners, a bisexual sadist. In the original he offers Danny to eat up his fat child cock (classic King moment). He shows up in the TV movie too, in a highly sanitized version.
>>224073829>raging libshit with terminal case of TDS>every waking moment is consumed with obsessive hatred of Donald Trump>the one time he actually agrees with Trump is when he's trying to downplay/deny the existence of the Epstein child trafficking ringReally makes ya think.
