Star Trek: The Next Generation: "Up The Long Ladder" introduced a colony which, having too few members for a stable gene pool, resorted to reproduction purely through cloning. Their genetic samples deteriorating, they secretly take new ones from Riker and Pulaski. When they find out, both find the unawakened clone bodies and kill them outright. According to writer Melinda Snodgrass, it was intended as a pro-choice aesop -- but it wasn't very well-received."Up the Long Ladder" was criticized from two directions. Snodgrass recalled, "I got enormous flack from the right to life coalition because they destroyed the clones. They thought I was condoning abortion. In fact, I did put a line in Riker's mouth that was very pro-choice and the right to life coalition went crazy. He says "I told you that you can't clone me and you did it against my will, and I have the right to have control over my own body." That's my feeling and it was my soapbox, and it was one I got to get on. I was supported by Maurice all the way." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 181)
Equating abortion to coldblooded murder is the pro-choice stance?
>>224078506It's certainly the mask off pro-choice stance. It was certainly a lot of chtutzpah.lots more foids going mask off and admitting pro-lifers were accurate about what they want since lindsay clancy these days.it's gone from "it's just a clump of cells" to "it doesn't matter if it's a human life it's my RIGHT to kill it"
anyone know if Melinda Snodgrass is ((()))?Wikipedia doesn't have anything in the Early Life section, but it might have been scrubbed
>>224078194>Irish hundreds of years in the future >All lazy stupid drunks
you'd think the enterprise would carry around like a dna bank of healthy sperm and eggswould solve like a dozen episodes before the intro
>>224078792>Can't we get that information from the transporter that analyzes us at the subatomic level?>No, that would make the episode end too quickly.
Hey /trek/, figured I'd join the discussion.Longtime Star Trek enthusiast here. TNG is my favorite, Picard is my captain, and I have a particular appreciation for Trek when it gets philosophical and gives you something to think about.I enjoy discussing the characters, writing, and ideas behind the franchise. I believe the original vision of Star Trek is something worth aspiring to.Looking forward to some good discussions. Live long and prosper.

>>224078194I can’t believe Leftists love this retarded show.
>>224078194This is one of Mike Stoklasa’s favorite episodes
>>224078194its not farfetch to think there are surrogate business purely for children being used as experiments and atrocities, as well as cloning already in the business, but behind hidden doors. i would not be surprised if one day, those two are combined. abortion is a medical intervenience that should be allowed for as long as there is no heartbeat. however i believe energetically speaking life starts at conception. now the clones -what are they? alive but dead, an entity of their own, a replica?
>>224078194>female writer>topic is about sex/reproduction>tone/style is preachy, as if the audience is being lectured like a child.Every time. They just can't help themselves.
>>224078194its a good episode because of the irish but the abortion shit almost ruins it. problem is there would be at least several dozen people on board who were totally into being cloned and a few hundred more who couldnt care less either way. pulaski being against it makes no sense. they would have had plenty of volunteers. i would do it. if i cant live forever at least my dna can live on
>>224078194Honestly what should’ve happened is Picard should’ve ordered the able bodied men of his crew to inseminate the women. After that when the drunk Irishmen went into the colony they would’ve had way more to women bang as they integrated into the colony
im not convinced they couldnt create a breeding population with 3 men and 2 women plus the cloning. each woman can produce 3 sets of boys and girls. that increases the total to 9 men and 8 women with about half of them not related to each other at all. should expect they have some ability to select genes even though its illegal. once they get to a few dozen mostly individuals the inbreeding factors are less restrictive and they can slowly return to natural reproduction which will eventually blend eberything out.

>>224078506>>224078646is it really murder if the body has never awakened to experience reality and therefore has no concept of personhood, arguably even sentient life of a basic animal level?
>>224082019Yes, its still the intentional ending of a human life. Personally for me the line does blur at stuff like morning after pills but we have so many options for contraception the idea of getting knocked up on "accident" in 2026 is insane to me. Especially if your a man, condoms are practically free, just don't have baby making sex if you don't want a baby
>>224078194Fans are weird. Human Cloning is banned in real life. Abortion has nothing to do with it.
