Tanks haven't really been important for winning land battles since WW2. Sure they could still be used to crush internal uprisings like at Tiananmen square. In Ukraine the shortest straw gets to go in the tank.

It isn't, it's just that people are focused on the Ukraine War where neither side has tanks that have counter-drone tech so they get blasted. The future of tanks is as anti-drone mobile platforms, but most people aren't having that conversation yet.
>>
>>224081594
>I wonder if we can just launch a couple nukes into the atmosphere to create a big enough EMP effect to try all electronics worldwide.
Why? Make war as gay as possible and nobody will want to participate. I can't imagine being a recruiter now trying to explain to Joe Gomez that they shouldn't care if there's a non-zero chance their last moments are immortalized online in 4k. Imagine telling some high school kid that war is "cool" when that same kid watched a Liveleak video of some Russian blowing his brains out because he would rather die quick than have a they/them drone operator get their axe wound quivering with glee because they dropped a bomb on them.

There's absolutely no romance to war anymore and that's good. It's the best thing to happen in warfare. Trump tried to excite the public into a land war with Iran and it was so universally reviled that he went against the wishes of his zionist masters to invade. Imagine how sour the American public must be on war for that to happen.
>>
>>224081541
>did the tank become obsolete in the 60's when a 2000 dollar single use bazooka could beat it?

with a bazooka you still need a line of sight, a drone can spot and attack a tank from anywhere, they're also way more effective.

also look at the current state of the Ukrainian war, no one even uses tanks anymore, they're death traps
>>
>>224081777
>where neither side has tanks that have counter-drone tech
Wrong. And no one has counter-drone tech for a tank that can stop a drone swarm.
>>
>>224081711
Desert Storm was regarded as a "perfect" military operation and a third of the MBTs still broke down on the road to Baghdad. An M1 Abrams can't fight World War 3 and it most certainly can't fight in a world of drones.
>>
>>224081875
Tanks don't exist to do tank battles, they exist to protect soldiers and provide huge firepower while those soldiers get to where they need to go. If your tanks are fighting other tanks then you're doing something wrong.

>>
>>224081427
They tried that Afghanistan. A couple of the tanks got disabled but to quote the marines "we slaughtered them all"
Used properly they are going 50 mph at you firing full speed while running things like trophy and other toys frying anything electronic in the air. You can't get a drone within 100 meters of an American m1a when it's active. They are either in the back or on the attack. They aren't built to sit still in pits. They are meant to attack, get fucked up and repaired easily and fast, then attack more. The gun is barely used it's all the electronic shit and the turbine is made to produce an insane amount of electricity to fry things. It's how we dealt with ieds. Just melting cell phones and drones. It's more like an aircraft carrier mixed with a battle ship. The thing is designed to take damage and be repaired. Europeans over design, Russians... Basically have death boxes and the Chinese are worst than Russians because the autoloader and wanting to launch missiles out of a barrell. Which is insanely. These things constantly are being blown up taking rpgs and shit. They need to be repaired constantly hence 4 people.
I mean fuck they launch drones from them all the time lol do people not realize this shit. It's a death machine that protects the soldiers. There is nothing a soldier or truck can carry it doesn't and it's faster and covered in armor with a fucking giant electric generator. How the fuck do you think drones go out anyway. This fucker will find you with satellite then launch a fucking long range missile at your drone launch ass then fzrap your shit drone for 25 cents then keep driving through your house and walls and streets until you are all dead. Welcome to Iraq 2 after the gloves came off and aghanistan We didnt even have people in the alot and operated them like drones for years. t's basically a fucking drone unless we want the cannon to go boom or we expect a fight which we dont.

A big gun that's protected with armor will always be useful. The biggest mistake retards make in these kind of topics is they think of war as individual units fighting in a vacuum. Depending on the environment tanks can "easily" be countered by infantry, which is why you support your own tanks with your own infantry and try to avoid urban combat. Just because something has a weakness doesn't make it obsolete

Also my favorite tank kino is that scene in the 2004 Hulk where he beats the shit out of the tank with the other tank

T. Russian

A battleship can still annihilate an entire convoy in minutes while a missile cruise is still reloading it's tubes. It also doesn't cost 200 million to fire a salvo and can support landing troops for miles behind the beach with artillery fire.

>>
>>224090967
>can support landing troops for miles behind the beach with artillery fire
That means nothing in this age. We hardly do beach landings and when they happen, aircraft and missiles will supply the cover. It will not only cost a ton to support a useless battleship for years waiting on a rare beach landing, but cost a lot to transport it over to the conflict area and take ages for it to do so. It already takes weeks for a carrier group to get into place and they're the fastest naval assets available. Slowly sailing a battleship towards the enemy shore just gives them a long time to prepare. And for what? Less than twenty miles of innacurate artillery from a slow, expensive and easily hit target? Wowie, so impressive. That ship couldn't hit 99.9% of Iran while missiles can strike Tehran with pinpoint accuracy.
>>
>>224091046
Not really though, it certainly started an arms-race in a new category of weapons but temu-drones will eventually become easy to counter.

War has always been around killing the enemy in the safest most bitchmade way possible. Leonidas and his crew were spammed with arrows to death. British empire used miniguns on spear chuckers. WW1 had machineguns mowing down retards walking like Barry Lyndon extras. I don't understand the kvetching about drones, war had nothing to do with honnor.

Cannae is the most famous stratagem in history because it's total slaughter of helpless people. Germans made huge gains in Soviet Union until Soviets got an airforce too. Germans annihilated Varus by refusing to form up against Roman squares because they weren't retards. You don't fight fair in war. There is no fair in war. It's mass carnage for retards.

u r committing the same mistake as american in afghanistan, just on another level

if u want to take over a country and "modify" it, you need occupation troops... nobody in his/her right mind from america would go to live in afghanistan for the rest of his/her life and commit his/her children to living there

same with tanks: if you want to take over a city or a region, you can drone them 24/7... unless you move into there you won't conquer it... and the safest way to move into there is in a tank

yes, in the age of drones and smart missiles it's more or less suicidal, yet there is no better solution

Why waste millions of dollars on something that has trouble in urban environments, needs infantry support and is slower than a drone that has a RPG warhead that can do just as good of a job? The entire march of the history of warfare is to make war gayer and lamer. In the Crimean War and the American Civil War the brave charges and line warfare was ruined by more advanced rifling. A Russian/Ukrainian man getting turned to paint in 2026 by a unseen drone will have a lot in common with a Entente/Central Powers soldier 110 years earlier getting killed by artillery fire from far beyond his eyes can see. In fact that's how most soldiers in most large scale wars died in the 20th century: Artillery fire and air strikes. Artillery's scythe still reaps many a young man in Ukraine.

Tanks/Helicopters/what have you have been debated on being obsolete for decades. This bit is from a book I found at a thrift store that was written in 1990, before Desert Storm. The tank may still have a place on the battlefield but it's importance has diminished and only in certain situations

Tanks will probably never be completely obsolete because having an armoured box that is resistant to bullets and shrapnel that can blast shit with a big gun is still useful.

armored troop carriers are also good but if they already have tracks (wheels can be shot out even by a pea-shooter lol) they might as well mount a turret on it... which is the same logic behind the Abrams and the jewish tank (both of which have a back door and can carry 6 soldiers or 2 stretchers and 2 medics or smth)
>>
>>224096724

I don't really get what you mean. A tank is constructed with a specific purpose in mind and muddling the design only makes it shittier at doing what it's meant to do(maneuver and blast shit with it's big gun).

The Merkava "troop compartment" is a meme that came about as a quirk of its design and it never get used as an actual IFV.

Again I don't understand what you mean.
The Abrams(aside from some Soviet designs) is probably the supreme example of what a tank should be, it's not some "meme" design like the Russian terminator.

The Merkava(the first model at least) was made with maximum crew survivability in mind, hence the front mounted engine. It's tailored to threats that the Israelis experienced fighting against Arabs in the Golan heights.
If you want a real meme overspecialised tank take a look at the Swedish Strv 203

The Merkava is seeing heavy use in Gaza and Lebanon with impressive results.

>hat... but for troop transport where a light armored transport would not be sufficient.
This is wrong too. You don't use tanks to "transport" troops because that's the job for IFVs/APCs, both of which are used by the US and Israel.
Planes and helicopters can only do so much. You need boots on the ground and you need tanks to support them as well

No. It's doctrinally a tank and meant to be used as such. TDs have their uses and not every casemate design is a tank destroyer.

>but to be fair their fault is not being able to stay in one place with engine running (without even considering the risk of heat signature getting droned or rocketed)

Not really. People said the same thing about Bazookas and hand held anti-tank missiles.

At the end of the day, you still need tanks and armored vehicles to patrol, hold down key areas, and for attacking.

Drones are only good for harassment and sniping from the shadows. Drones can't hold a position. And other countries are speeding up development of anti-drone technology. Like wireless jammers, lasers, etc.

>We use Aircraft Carriers, Destroyers, and Cruisers instead because there's no point in those huge ass cannons on battleships anymore because guided missiles and aircraft are better.

We only did that to save money in the 1990s when the cold war ended and the US wanted to shrink its military budget to save money. The Navy decided to retire battleships and put all the new weapons on destroyers and frigates.

And now the US Navy has admitted that was a mistake and wants the Battleship back because they realized a bigger hull is needed for next gen weapons like large railguns, laser weapons, and more missiles.

You are looking at it backwards.

Tanks are part of combined arms warfare. You are supposed to use tanks partnered with proper infantry and air support. The problem is that Russia doesn't have a proper airforce! So they deployed tanks without air cover. So they got hit by bazookas, javelin missiles, Artillery, and drones.

Also the future of drone technology is going to be AI powered drones. Jamming means nothing to them. Fiber optic links are so 7 years ago. Get with the times.

Nigga its a doctrinal thing. Militaries do this all the time for good reason.

The S tank was designed with survivability in mind since the Swedes looked at tank engagements in the Korean war and noticed that most hits were on the turret, so they eliminated the turret. It was still meant to do all the things a tank was supposed to do( unlike a tank destroyer)
>>
>>224094956
>Why waste millions of dollars on something that has trouble in urban environments, needs infantry support and is slower than a drone that has a RPG warhead that can do just as good of a job?

Because unless you specifically have counter tank weapons, then you are screwed.

Ukraine has already said they are running low on javelin missiles and other weapons. So tanks are able to slowly push forward and capture territory. They are barely defending by spamming drones, but that still has limits.

>but tanks have an obvious disadvantage against air stuff...
So is literally everything else that's on the ground ...
Are you under the impression that SPAA is still useful against modern aviation? Perhaps against drones like the shahed but that isn't a frontline role that a tank is made for.

>they probably will once the war gets close enough
They actually tried making an AFV that combined fast firing autocannons with the armour of a tank and it turned out to be a useless piece of shit.

Again. The russians and the soviets before them fucking LOVED their SPAA, however there is a reason they didn't use them in place of tanks..
>>
>>224098714
I don't know why people are complaining that tanks can't beat drones. Well obviously. Tanks lose to ALL AIR attacks. It's not just drones.

And the next generation of tanks will probably include unmanned drone tanks. So taking them out won't lose any lives.
>>
>>224098883
People also seriously overestimate drones since most drone footage they see are hits.

What they don't see are all the misses and shit like that.
There was an interview with some ukie drone operators and they said that to take out, meaning to at least damage a single tank it takes like a dozen droone operators working in tandem and something like 90% of drones are lost before they even get to the target, and that stil doesn't guarantee a kill. Now you have to take into account the availability of the drones themselves. Does that particular unit have enough drones to do the job? And it's still dozens and dozens of people working to take out only a couple of targets in a battlefield where emitting any kind of signal exposes you to risk from enemy drones or artillery.

Ask any soldier in Ukraine if they would rather have a drone that has like a 20% chance of killing a tank or a javelin that will definitely kill it 90% of the time.
