The book still makes it clear its some supernatural entity that has some qualities that gives off the veneer of a polar bear but its shape and size is understood right away as something else. But it uses darkness and shadow to give more ambiguity to what it looks like exactly, opting for the shape and profile of it to be more prevalent. The show trying to be more overt in showing it all, with the shoddy CGI does not serve the same feeling as well. Overall though the show gets the essence of the book very well and does not relent on diving deep into what makes it so enrapturing.
