Funnily enough, The 1998 Tristar is probably the most important film to modern Godzilla. The whole franchise today would be much different without it.
It offended Toho so much they made the Millennium Era, and Legendary wanted to make a proper American Godzilla, then the success of Legendary's films emboldened Toho to make Shin and Minus

I loved the 1998 godzilla.

Godzilla fleshlight when?
>>
>>224091647
Japs actually think this movie is decent. They don't hate it. Delusional western weebs tried to paint the whole thing as some kind of dramatically offensive FUCK YOU to Japan, when in reality is just a monster movie

I even enjoy it more than the soulless Legendary slop. The late 90s rainy NYC aesthetic is kino

This movie has a lot of great practical effects that still look awesome today (the old guy is comped in, the rest is practical)

I loved the buildup. The atomic age opening, seeing Godzilla's footprints, the giant claw marks on the ship he wrecked, etc. It's too bad Broderick's performance and the general 90s dumb humor brings the movie down. Otherwise it's a very solid creature feature with a great sequel hook.
>>
>>224091839
All I remember about this shit was Broderick digging up some worms

Based Godzilla 98 enjoyer
>>
>>224091647
remember those retarded threads about Shin with the "Anno should make dune" just utterly retarded, like godzilla fans real bottom of the barrel morons all of you.
>>
>>224091647
people shit on the 98 at film but it was literally better than the 2008 film which is one of the shittiest movies ever made
>>

>Japs actually think this movie is decent. They don't hate it.
It's a generational thing. Older Japanese fans hated the '98 movie and adopted the acronym GINO (Godzilla In Name Only), that Toho used, but I think Final Wars (as well as some dialogue in GMK) establishing that the '98 Godzilla is "Zilla" a separate monster altogether, has softened the modern view on the creature, especially considering the '98 film is a fun movie when viewed on its own.
>>
>>224092009
>but it was literally better than the 2008 film
There was no Godzilla film in 2008.
>>
I still say “That’s a lot of fish…” whenever I’m about to go down a chick.
Hilarious and delusional 90s kino par excellence.
>>
>>224092225
>There was no Godzilla film in 2008.

its so forgettable I dont remember the year, the one with Walter white
>>
>>224092284
That was 2014, and I think it was good for what it was. If nothing else it paved the way for King of Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, which are fun, and like OP says, spurred Toho into doing Shin, which is one of the best Godzilla films ever made.
>>
>>224092445
go fuck yourself, shin is shit and you need therapy
>>
>>224092762
Nah, I'm objectively correct.
>>
>>224092204
1998 Godzilla and Godzilla Junior are legally and trademarked as Godzilla and have to be referred to as such. Zilla was created in 2004 and has become the version everyone uses since.
>>
>>224091647
This movie is kino. So what if Godzilla isn’t an indestructible Superman dinosaur, why can’t we have a take on Godzilla where he’s just an animal opposed to a supernatural being?
>>
>>224091647
>>224091699
Godzilla 98 was the best one, I actually feel bad for the mother dying, it's way better than whatever the japs ever make. Also, it gave us the Kino series, where the son that survived becomes a cool guy.
>>
>>224093371
Imagine a take on Superman where we was just a normal person who dies to a couple of bullets.
>>
>>224091812
I haven't seen the movie in years but is this scene actually in the movie? There's a scene (either this one or very similar, old guy on a dock or under an umbrella and the rain stops when Godzilla goes over him) that was in the commercials, but never happened in the movie.
>>
>>224091647
>Shin
Ah yes, disco Godzilla.
>>
Why do we hate Shin and Minus One so much?
>>
>>224091647
It mercifully marks the beginning of the end for Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. They had the opportunity to write their own tickets after ID4, then proceeded to shit the bed with every subsequent movie. The only way Emmerich can make his braindead mockbusters now is by kowtowing to Chinamen investors looking for tax shelters. Has there been a more precipitous drop than theirs?
>>
>>224094488
Hot take but neither of them made good movies.
>>
>>224091839
The main problem is they made him too vulnerable and omitted his signature breath. Even those two little changes would have made a night and day difference. I think the popularity of Jurassic Park and various Armywank films at the time sadly played too heavy an influence into the characterization and plot
>>
Its GOJIRA you morons!
>>
>>224094771
>>224091839
Godzilla is a female, chuds. She births a ton of babies in the movie.
>>
>>224091729
americans watching this movie
>this isn't at all like a godzilla movie, the thing I paid money to see, and the acting is laughably bad and only sometimes on purpose. the fucking military destroys more of the city then godzilla does and there's too much seething about siskel and ebert from the director

japanese watching the movie
>wow it's like a kaiju movie, one of the 5000 we have, only set in america. how novel! wwww americans sure are silly, especially that funny fat mayor. anyway for the next godzilla movie real godzilla is going to kill this thing in literally 20s, do you rike it?
>>
>>224094331
actually being movies like the original, critiquing the japanese government and society while talking about uncomfy ww2 stuff, instead of toys smashing into eachother.

shin godzilla in particular being an extend shittalk towards the government for its retarded handling of literally any situation due to over-bureaucracy and not wanting to be the person responsible for making a tough choice in case you lose face genuinely made the movie controversial in jp and leads to a movie that's mostly just people talking in rooms with a lot of the parody going over any foreign pigs head that doesn't know the diet building isn't a place you lose weight at
>>
>>224091647
I remember the toys and the animated series.
>>
It's weird, the people who like this Godzilla because "it's not Godzilla", like they hate the fact Godzilla is the symbol and personification of the horrors of nuclear weapons and he is a living god and disaster that humans cannot stop unless they create an even more terrible weapon.
