space warping is totally possible.
you are not going faster than the speed of light, its the space around which bends, and the fabric of the universe is not limited to that speed.

The speed of light isn't a constant, and does change with the warping of space. And light bending around stars conclusively proves that space can be warped, and time itself along with it.

Thing is we don't need FTL, since if you were to travel at the speed of light (ignoring the obvious impossibilities) ANY trip would be instantaneous from your own perspective.
Returning however is a different story.

Now is honestly the best time for humanity to expand into space, I just wish we had the tools to do so. Earth has fulfilled it's purpose as the cradle but the longer we don't move on, the further we move to our own extinction, either by AI, war, or falling inwards into cyberspace. We should rather be putting all our efforts into space exploration and pulling more and more of humanity off Earth

following that plan, you would probably find another settlement already built by other earth's humans that developed a better way of travel when you arrive.

Warping space doesn’t change the speed of light, as light still travels at an unchanged velocity through warped space. Saying this is like saying a car didn’t actually travel 50 miles, as the crow flies, in an hour because it was going up and down hills. Light doing a bunch of loop-de-loops at C between point a and point b doesn’t mean it was traveling at less than C

What about instantaniously teleporting over stellar distances? How would that break causality when no information can reach or leave the "jumping" ship?
>>
>>224094938
one of the issues with FTL travel is that there is no unified frame of reference for time. every frame of reference is unique and "correct" in its own way, because time is not like a map coordinate where you can move back and forth freely, you can only move in one direction.

the nearest star is 4 lightyears away, if you were able to move there "instantaneously" you would also move backwards in time 4 years.
if you were to "look back" at our sun and then teleport again, you would jump back another 4 years.
this ofcourse is paradoxical, because you can't arrive somewhere before you started.
but FTL travel would enable you to do this, because the speed of light is also the speed of causality.
FTL travel would enable time travel and break the rules of causality. considering the universe still exists its safe to assume that nobody has figured it out yet (and nobody will ever figure it out) and it is a hard barrier that will never be broken.
>>
>>224095253
>the nearest star is 4 lightyears away, if you were able to move there "instantaneously" you would also move backwards in time 4 years.
But why? That star has an absolute position in front of me that does not necessarily correlate with the light from the star that's currently hitting my eyes, but its "real" coordinates in space can be calculated. And it's not like that I'm jumping into an entirely new timeframe in the alpha centauri system. Time should pass exectly as it does in the Sol system.

What if the teleportation engine resets all momentum or acceleration to zero?
Let's face it, I'm just too dumb to understand the consequences. But only because I want it to work. If it doesn't, we will remain on Earth for ever.
>>
>>224095386
for all intents and purposes, the light you see from alpha centauri "right now" IS "right now" over there, because there is no unified frame of reference of time.
they "havent caught up yet" with you. the universe is only 14 billion years old from your perspective, it IS literally younger the further you look into the distance.
this is an odd concept but its the way it works.
if you imagine the clocks running slower the farther you look into the distance, it might make more sense.
its something we as people dont really have an intuitive grasp on because the speed of causality makes no difference in everyday lives, everything is "instantaneous"

>the nearest star is 4 lightyears away, if you were able to move there "instantaneously" you would also move backwards in time 4 years.
Anon a “light year” is just a unit of measurement for how far light will travel in a year. Being able to move faster than light and then being able to turn around and watch things that happened x time before you left and the fact you won’t be visible at your location until light can travel back to your start point is not time travel. Time dilation is a function of mass and the theory is traveling at a relativistic velocity increases the mass of an object towards infinity. That a satellite in orbit has more mass than a satellite on the ground, which generates measurable amounts of time dilation that need to be accounted for.

Being able to travel without actually moving is a proposed means of sidestepping this universal speed limit. Warping space is another proposed method, to essentially make each step a person takes longer without actually changing anything about the person. But we haven’t figured out how to uncompress space.
>>
>>224095601
>we will remain on Earth for ever
Not at all, you theoretically could travel to anywhere in the universe within your lifetime without breaking causality since time-dilation is a thing.
If you traveled 50 lightyears at just under the speed of light, the trip would be almost instantaneous from your perspective. From an outsider's perspective it would have taken you ~50 years, but from their perspective you would look to be frozen in time.
Of course nobody is going to be able to achieve that due to the energy requirements and the instant burst of 50 years worth of radiation would be insane; but still technically possible.
>>
>>224095554
Whoever taught you this was fucking with you or just retarded.

If you instantly traveled to where Vega appears to be now, you would be in empty space, some distance away from Vega. If you then turned around and tried to instantly travel where earth appears to be from your current perspective, you would also be in empty space. Everything in the universe is always moving. To instantly travel to Vega based upon where it appears to be from the perspective of earth, you would need to calculate where it would appear to be four years from now, as what is visible from earth is where Vega was four years ago. To get back, if for some reason you don’t have your start coordinates, you would need to chart earth’s movement through the sky from Vega and calculate where it would be in four years.

If you took another method, and instead of traveling straight at Vega in one jaunt, and instead teleported one lightmonth towards where vega seems to be now, Vega would shift a distance in [whatever] direction when you arrived, because you’re now seeing what would be visible from earth a month after you left. You could then turn around and look back and see whatever was happening on earth a month ago. This isn’t time travel, this is moving to another snapshot of light as light travels through space. You wouldn’t be able to, say, send a message by shining lights at earth from the lightmonth away as it would take a month to reach earth, and that light would reach earth moments after you left.
>>
>>224096482
Anon if you time dilated yourself to near infinity so you could travel any distance I a reasonable amount of time from your perspective, you would see everything in the universe speed up while from an outside perspective you would seem to never move.
>>
Ah sweet it’s a retards try and explain general relativity thread.
>>
>>224096538
Thank you for rewording that post.
>>
>>224096641
You really don’t understand what was said if you think that’s a rewording. If you time dilated to a point where you could travel 50 light years in one year, the destination, presumably a planet or something, would also be moving 50 times faster than it is currently, to your perspective. If you dilated to near infinity, everything would be moving nearly infinitely fast, from your perspective.
>>
Faster than light communication would break causality. Instant teleportation like on Galactica should be safe.
Imagine you are sitting inside a strong gravity well like orbiting a neutron star and you tried to communicate with the outside world over faster than light subspace radio. It breaks my mind even thinking about it

The flow of information takes time. A radio broadcast of a conversation between two very different timeframes is different than teleporting from relatively empty space to relatively empty space 20 lightyears away.
>>
>>224096704
Where do you even get this shit?

Neptune is anywhere between 2 and 14 lightminutes away from earth at any given time. If a faggot on Neptune was chatting with a retard on earth their messages would arrive after they were sent. If the retard looked at Neptune and saw the faggot get murdered, he wouldn’t be able to message the faggot and warn him, because the faggot would’ve already been dead 2-14 minutes by the time the retard saw it.

>>
>>224097167

>>
>>224097051
there is no such thing as "out of date", time always depends on your reference point.
there will always be a 14 lightminutes difference between earth and neptune, because causality travels this fast.
the gravity of neptune also affects us at this rate.
there is no "real neptune, 14 minutes into the future" yet by the time you see the light from neptune on earth, for all intents and purposes, this neptune doesnt exist yet.

if you could travel there "instantaneously", the neptune you see from earth right now would be the neptune you travel to, because you "instant travel" requires that you keep your own specific reference point. you cant travel to a point in time that doesnt exist yet.
which is where FTL travel breaks down, because looking back at earth again, you would see earth again 14 minutes in the past, and you would see your own ship before it launched, and if you jumped again you would meet yourself, which is ofcourse paradoxical and cant be
>>
>>224092765
It's time to accept this: reality is not star wars nor star trek. There will not be any warp travel where the average joe is easily, quickly joy riding around the galaxy meeting millions of sexy aliens. Humanity is stuck in the solar system for the forseeable future and harsh reality does not care how that makes you feel. Life on this planet has been here for many millions of years, dying, going extinct, living only to be obliterated by some enemy, etc. You have no destiny nor right to travel the stars. And exploration to new frontiers is deadly and arduous. The people just on the frontiers of America died like crazy to animals, disease, starvation, and exposure. And that's on a fucking livable planet like Earth. You're not going to send out some normal speed ship and explore dead worlds either. If humans truly want to explore the stars, it will be done by robots and digital lifeforms. Long time lines, slow speed, and harsh conditions mean nothing to them.
>>
>>224097745
Anon. You’re confusing particles moving through space with time. I’ve seen you do this before and you just keep repeating your faulty idea as someone who did have breakfast. Light is not time. Light is just information. Looking at where Neptune was 2-14 minutes ago isn’t looking into the past. Being able to instantly move to where Neptune is doesn’t break causality. The light from your arrival will still take 2-14 minutes to reach earth. Being able to look at earth and see things that happened 2-14 minutes before you arrived on Neptune isn’t looking into the past. If you instantly traveled from earth to Neptune and back again, you would not arrive before you left, you’d arrive after you left, after you left Neptune. Objects in space are at their current position in space no matter how much lag caused by distance there is between you and that object. For light is not time, and playing ping pong with photons isn’t time travel.

The biggest barrier is there is no energy source we could ever harness or produce that would be capable of creating FTL travel, even if we solved all the other problems. There is no magic dilithium or tillium or unobtaniom out there to power the warp engines. There's only a finite amount of elements in the universe and we've discovered most of them, and there's no sign of any being an efficient or powerful enough energy source to do anything noteworthy with. We were lucky enough to have oil hanging around just to help us fire some rockets into space, but that's extremely finite resource that's rapidly running out so soon we won't even to breach our own atmosphere let alone establish colonies within our own system - never mind true space colonization.

Earth is our aquarium. Earth is our prison. We will never expand beyond it in any meaningful way. We will exist and die exclusively on this rock. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just a coping retard.

The problem is that time slows down for things moving at light speed. Assuming Earth as a frame and another object like a space ship travelling at some fraction of speed of light as another frame, on the ship time will slow down. Both has humans wanting to travel to another destination planet.
Excluding FTL, if we want to travel huge distances the only other way is a wormhole. But because of this relativity of time slowing down, wormholes from our 2 sources to the common destination will cause irreconcilable differences. The wormhole from the ship to the planet will be in the past relative to the one from the earth to the planet.

Nigger, hydrocarbons are not essential. All you need to do a separate the water compound into hydrogen and oxygen with electrolysis. These same elements can then be combined to create the energy we need for space travel.
