The only thing you'd need to establish in book 4, would be that Malfoid would have the motivation to take action. Book 4 is when SHE begins to consciously acknowledge desire and feelings for Harry. Reciprocation from Harry doesn't happen in 4. In 4 it's more like confusion, like "wtf has gotten into Malfoid why was she nice to me just then" or dancing with her briefly and feeling a spark as he notices her scent and how it feels to hold her elegant form. 4 would be peak tsundere shit.Book 5 is when she slowly starts making more overt contact with Harry. Where Draco comments on the "doggo" (Sirius) on the platform out of pure maliciousness, Malfoids motive in covertly alerting Harry could be more sympathetic. That would turn into a theme for the entire book as Malfoid would join with Umbridge, but would make secret efforts to be nice to Harry, which Harry would slowly begin to notice and respond to. She would suspect him of hiding something and would poke and prod trying to figure it out. These attempts would fail, Harry doesn't include her at all in the DA. However, when Marietta rats them out, she realizes what Harry's been up to and is the one to tip him off about the DA (this is better than what actually happened, which was just Dobby/House elf shit). I'd insert one scene between there, and when she gets hexed by Ginny in Umbridge's office.

Like Harry has been coping and hoping for all of book 5 up to that point that there's no guarantee the Malfoys are on Voldemort's team and he finds out the worst case scenario is real after all.
