It's scarier to people who grew up being made to fear demons and shit like that. Personally I never got it because if you believe in demons then I'd assume you believe in God and souls too so I would assume that my position in the existential hierarchy is higher than that of a demon. But I did date a girl who was like that. Like she'd get really scared and not be able to sleep if she saw anything about demons before bed.

^I was just about to say this. Most people back then (early 70s) were raised in the strict religious households or a least religion-attached homes of the 1940s and 1950s. The real pill is realizing the fact that it isn't scary to most people in THIS society is a testament to how fucked up and far removed from the prior beliefs it has gone. Even if someone isn't all that religious, the film should disturb them. If it doesn't, the society they come from is fucked in the head, which ours is. Hence, not scary or disturbing anymore.
