Narcissa Malfoy getting Snape to swear an Unbreakable Vow to protect her child also works about 100x better when it's Dracaena rather than Draco. Doing it doesn't conflict with anything Snape and Dumbledore weren't already planning, and it gives Snape an extra way to "demonstrate" his loyalty to Team Voldemort, so it's quite clever, but Snape doesn't really give a shit about Draco. Dumbledore slightly does, but only because he wants to save everyone, not because he actually thinks highly of Draco.Everything is different with Dracaena. With her, the math changes, because she means something very different to Harry than Draco does, and because, unlike Draco, Dracaena is very clearly worth saving. How do you think Harry learning, after the fact, that Snape and Dumbledore were actively trying to protect not only him, but the girl he loves, will make him think about them and what they did? Protecting Draco was a minor price for gains in their schemes, but protecting Dracaena isn't a side-effect or side-matter. It can't be. It is built in that neither Dracaena nor Draco succeed in killing Dumbledore. But what if they had? If Dracaena had killed Dumbledore, this would have done irreparable damage to Harry. If Draco had been the one to do it, it wouldn't have particularly affected Harry, other than the fact of Dumbledore being murdered. Even the failure is different. Draco fails in no small part because of cowardice, not because of belated moral resolve. Dracaena fails because she can't make herself cross that line — part of that is because she's resisting the evil and part because she understands what it would do to Harry. For her to do it would be a deep and personal betrayal of Harry in a way it just isn't and can't be with Draco. Draco isn't anything to Harry such that anything he did would be such a deep and personal betrayal. "What will Harry think of me?" is not a question Draco is asking, but one which is top of mind for Dracaena.
