Or I guess "Frostian" or whatever the fuck, given that the book influenced Frost's world-building on Twin Peaks.>>224116711The truth is that Lovecraft was never actually all that consistent in his writing for there to be something distinctly "Lovecraftian" that isn't just "related to an idea that Lovecraft penned." At The Mountains of Madness, Call of Cthulhu, Pickman's Model, The Color Out of Space, (etc.) are all pretty distinct from one another. Any real connections between them were forced by Derleth after Lovecraft's death. You'd have better luck making movies out of the works of authors that wrote after him like Ramsay Campbell, Michael Shea, or Laird Barron, who all have more cohesive visions.
>>224117990the first half was good, but the second you go around guns blazing, it looses it`s appeal. It`s weird with lovecraft games, they have good themes and spooky ideas, but the execution is always clunky and amateurish. The new sinking city was always good til the halfpoint, then it became janky and tedious

>>224116372The Void (2016) is pretty cool
>seeing a giant octopus man somehow makes you go crazy
>>224118934>Because Lovecraftian stuff is based on NOT showing and NOT explaining,See this shit is always said but it’s in fact, completely wrong. I think it started when Lovecraft stories became popular in tabletop RPG and the way to make them a bit more original was to add a sanity mechanic that’s based on how much weird stuff the characters were exposed to. But in the actual stories themselves? It’s described extensively. Of course there's some unexplained mysteries (the end of Mountains of Madness for example) or things that just can’t be properly described (the titular color from outer space or non-euclidian angles), but on the whole Lovecraft loved to describe what he imagined. That was how he could properly convey the body horror and weirdness of his creatures. In fact part of the reason his popularity remained high was that he had described his stuff so extensively it was easy to emulate his style, which eventually led to the Cthulhu Mythos being written by collaborative effort.

The whole point is that Lovecraft’s characters themself fail to describe what they saw, they fully realise that themselves. They cannot describe it because it’s indescribable. Words will always fail it because it’s beyond human comprehension.

>>224120573An approximate representation that a human being can try and wrap their head around is not the same as a proper full description. Any visual representation of a cosmic horror is going to fall so fucking short and is not a good way to showcase Lovecraft is my point. The reason Lovecraft’s stories work at least in my opinion is that you realise that these horrors cannot be truly understood by us puny humans so all you’re left with is the dread and your mind going wild thinking about it.

Lovecraft didn't invent cosmic horror, it isn't synonymous with Lovecraftian. >>224120573>>so it basically looks like a dude with dragon's wings and the head of a squid>>indescribablething about Lovecraft monsters is that these are just the closest matching ways to describe it. not that it's simply a normal squid head. there's room for variation in individual, imaginative interpretations of his entities. but in general Lovecraft still had a keen eye for lurid descriptions of all kinds of elements in his stories, especially settings. now take Algernon Blackwood's The Wendigo, for example. a classic cosmic horror veering, supernatural terror tale. the setting is luridly pictured, so are the mental states of each character. but he barely describes the Wendigo. it's presence is felt, even smelled, this incomprehensible, malevolent preternatural spirit that you just sense is watching you, but far as a direct description goes, all you get is that it would be one of the most unpleasant things you'd ever see, if i recall. lovely story. The Willows by Blackwood, another masterpiece, arguably superior to the Wendigo, that which further dips into cosmic horror.

>>224116284>AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I'm going insaneThe problem in this age is that everyone's minds are so poisoned by irony and media that most people don't take reality seriously at all. Back then, there was an objective real world, that people knew 100% was how things worked, then seeing it suddenly stop being trustworthy and the impossible occuring would be what breaks their brains and drives them insane. Objective reality suddenly becomes a dream world full of impossible things they can't reconcile. Right now, people could see a cartoon character appear right in front of them, hang out all day talking with them, and they wouldn't think it was too strange at all. Reality is just headcanon to them and can be whatever they want. They can't identify with the characters who take reality so seriously. If a giant squid monster appeared, sure it would be scary, but like an escaped tiger is scary since it'll eat you. The impossibility of it doesn't even register since anything is possible to them. There's lots of people that believe if they think really hard they can manifest whatever good/bad events they want to occur.

>>224123229I don't know if they've patched this bug, but last time I played that game I couldn't actually finish it because the very last sequence is somehow tied to the clock frequency of your CPU so because processors now have several times higher clock frequencies you can't actually finish it before the timer runs out. >>224123896There are two lengthy descriptions of Cthulhu's idols in The Call of Cthulhu that paint a very clear picture of what you're dealing with. Lovecraft even drew it himself.>If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which made it most shockingly frightful.>It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopuslike head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence, and squatted evilly on a rectangular block or pedestal covered with undecipherable characters. The tips of the wings touched the back edge of the block, the seat occupied the center, whilst the long, curved claws of the doubled-up, crouching hind legs gripped the front edge and extended a quarter of the way down toward the bottom of the pedestal. The cephalopod head was bent forward, so that the ends of the facial feelers brushed the backs of huge forepaws which clasped the croucher's elevated knees. Then the sailor's first hand testimony repeats the same basic details, except now it's real instead of just a statue.>It lumbered slobberingly into sight and gropingly squeezed Its gelatinous green immensity through the black doorway>A mountain walked or stumbled.>Three men were swept up by the flabby claws before anybody turned.>Then, bolder than the storied Cyclops, great Cthulhu slid greasily into the water and began to pursue with vast wave-raising strokes of cosmic potency.>The awful squid-head with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht, but Johansen drove on relentlessly.
