Not due to incompetence, but as in, they just deliberately changed a bunch of shit that did not even need to be changed. I remember someone doing a beat-by-beat comparison of how the book and movies handle the reveal of Snape, and the whole thing feels like a rewrite to completely alter the character. They even left out a line but cut off the context so it no longer makes any sense.
