Localization isn't a rational process, it always seemed to me like it was born out of some bizarre assumed xenophobia that would make it impossible for audiences to like something that was slightly foreign, which is especially odd considering Pokémon was already a series about a world filled with new and fantastical creatures with funny names. There was definitely kino and quality in the first season at least, and it seemed to progressively go downhill unfortunately.

It could unironically have been a great series if they aged up the characters in real time so there was a clear progression. By this point Ash could have had kids and they all have Pokemans and rivals with Gary's kids, etc.
