Good. An Obsession thread. I just watched it for the first time this night and I found myself disturbingly similar to Bear in the first half of the movie. I'm also cowardly, awkward, timid, and I easily get attached to woman who show attention or affection. Obviously, I'm not demented like him, so I wouldn't have been okay with sleeping with and dating a woman that's either having a mental breakdown or demonically obsessed, but even so, I could've seen myself making that wish when I was younger...

I laid awake all in my bed all night, thinking that I need to do better.

I fully recognize that the events of the movie played out the way it did because Bear was such a coward. It's even implied that he could've gotten with Nikki in an organic matter if he'd just convinced. Nikki before being possessed even says things like she never lets somebody know when she likes them.

But Bear never tried because he was a coward. And when he ruined her life, he was too cowardly to try and fix it until it personally harmed him. Utterly despicable.

But also human. And a cautionary tale of what happens when a man is too afraid to take charge of his life and take chances. A cautionary tale about a man dipping himself so far into escapism that he destroys the lives of everyone around him.

Going forward, I'm going to start actually trying in life. I'm going to stop indulging in so much escapism and start working on improving myself and getting past my own anxiety so I can be a man that I'm proud of.

I know this sounds corny, but this movie really had a profound effect on me.

He basically was after the dinner scene. He notices her psychotic breakdown, he hears her regurgitate his wish almost verbatim, and then she asks him does it even matter? He says not really, then it cuts to him fucking her, while Nikki looks to the side with a blank expression and tears in her eyes, which implies that the original Nikki is basically being raped by him since she has no autonomy here. Bear may not KNOW she's being possessed here, but he knows that she's been mentally fucked by the wish beyond repair and he doesn't care because he can fuck her.

And later when Bear hears her scream on the phone, he 100% knows that she's suffering and a hostile entity is taking over her body. And yet he still doesn't care. Infact his first instinct is to just change the wish so she's still enslaved and possessed, but just less clingy.

Then in the final scenes, he yells at the entity possessing Nikki to just be like Nikki. Which once again implies that he would've been fine raping Nikki's body for the rest of his life if she was "normal". Nikki would've been suffering for all of eternity and he wouldn't have cared.. that's basically captivity + torture from a guy who claims to "love" her

Ergo, she would've been willing to give him a chance. This was literally his chance to ask her out or confess his feelings.

But Bear is too timid. And as she leaves the car, he stupidly uses Ian's pickup lines. Which shocks her because she thought she had a close relationship with Bear than that. She could expect a sleezebag like Ian to call her Freaky Nikki, but she never expected that from Bear. She confronts him about it and asks him point blank if has likes her. She wants to confirm if he's just being an edgy prick or just a social retard trying to flirt.

Bear again acts timid and denies that he likes her. Nikki is frustrated at this point. Because it's clear he's a indecisive coward. She's also hurt because she was secretly hoping that he would've stated his feelings plainly. That's why she's so curt and cold to him after he denies it.
