But here's my opinion.I read monthly issues Dredd and 2000AD during my youth in the 90s, and also read the old TPBs from the 70s and 80s eras. A generalisation I'd make about the Dredd comics of the 20th century is this: long arcs such as the Necropolis and America arcs were serious in tone and had lasting consequences for the setting, whereas the wacky comedy romps were usually limited to one-off, episodic stories. That was not an unbreakable rule, but it was how the writers would operate maybe 8 times out of 10. So I'd say that a Dredd film, being more akin to a long arc, should be serious.
