Time for another Heaven Burns Thread, where we get drunk on Ohshima events!

While EN has caught up all the way to the Isuzu event, JP has actually launched its Minori event now. The Powerpro Baseball Collab has come and gone and was actually a substantial upgrade to prior collabs.

EN will get the second Angel Beats collab soon, the only yuri leaning one, so that's a good thing to look forward to. Meanwhile JP has gone without an announcement for the new story chapter for a while, so with it being the end of the year we must be approaching a release date.

In adjacent news, HBR officially launched its stage play, which covers content up to chapter 2 of the main story. It was apparently quite the succees and well received by fans!

In regards to the event itself, I actually have some musing myself. There is this whole part that I'm not quite sure how to make sense of. The backstory of how the parents met and eloped is one thing, but they make a big deal about how the mother's side of the family disagreed with that marriage and how they took back the mom's corpse to bury in their graveyard in Hakone. But this actually means the Ohshima sextuplets had living relatives who were also fairly well off (hence why their mom was so sheltered and controlled). This would mean that somehow the Child Protective services did not try to move the sisters to those family members for some reason. Even if the family rejects daughters of a marriage they didn't approve of, it seems extremely spiteful and hard to justify. This really makes the already comically poor and vague living situation of the Ohshimas post parents deaths even more confusing.

So the new SiL song Miss Moon Light is pretty unique. I love the chill and energetic contrast. It's also really cool to have lines from all the 31A VAs in here instead of just Xai and Konomi. It really gives it that jazzy feel where anybody can just contribute.

Something that stands out to me about the live 2D animation is that they clearly used animation tech to make the sprites more dynamic. We got actual lip movements for the singing and everyone feel more alive, both in expressions and movement. I think they already did that in the Vritika event, but it feels even more pronounced here.
Alongside changing the location to an open air concert and having those colored cut-ins of the characters, they really managed to get some new appeal out of the live show, even 30+ iterations into the game. Really cool.

I think the main issue is that we dont have a proper military related antagonist to challenge. Tezuka and Nanami are in the same boat and Tezuka isnt even commander anymore. We would need actual military officials to be present to act as the villains.

The fact that we are getting this right before the new chapter tells me they are serious about it. This WILL change the status quo. Finally putting some respect on the side-cast and their great events and storylines. Also the recommended events are generally all huge nodes that connect a bunch of other events and squads. With Iroha and Monanyan we also got 31D and 30G members in the know.

Maru and Yanagi seem odd at first, but the Maruyama group is deeply involved with Japan's old government and Yanagi mentioned in her event that she keeps in contact with the remnants of the Maruyama group. It would be very hard to keep her fooled if she is directly confronted with the truth and overcomes the brainwashing.
Maru-chan has been build up as some sort of secondary protagonist for like 3 years now. I think it makes sense for her to be here. And as the orange line floating around her and Yanagi shows, they are inseperable anyway.
Maru looks straight ahead with determination, like a proper protag too.
Yanagi loooks down with regret, as she no doubt feels like the original Yanagi failed to protect the original Maru-chan.

It's interesting that Isuzu is the only one who has her Seraph out in this group, maybe showing off that she is the most willing to use violence to deal with this. She is also looking completely away from the screen, which usually means she is the most at odds with everyone else's direction.

Irene grits her teeth, but looks forward determinedly. She is the only one here who wouldn't actually care that she is a copy, because her purpose is to keep the name of Irene Redmayne alive. But she would still be sad for her comrades of course.

Tenne looks up forlorn as if waiting for someone to guide her (and looking at the heavens implies asking the dead for support, in this case Shion).

If 31A is with Tezuka, then they would necessarily be straying from the main mission of taking down the Mother Cancer. Would that mean this group is at the front line instead? I just dont see how any of these investigations would go anywhere while sticking to Japan. And Kyushi wouldnt even hold that much military secret data as it and Hokkaido were meteor impact zones for Mother Cancer and got overrun first.

Also the event title やがて帝へと至る眼差し is hard for me to interpret.
"A gaze that will reach the Emperor"? That could make sense considering Yanagi's event was called "Breakfast with the little Emperor". Emperor would clearly refer to Kanata. But then what is reaching her gaze? I must be reading this wrong...

Replaying the second AB collab after all this time, I really forgot how funny it actually is. The writing is pretty tight and the jokes all land. Compared to AB1 which was just full of gimmicks and AB3 which repeated the same 3 jokes over and over, this really is pretty good.

Not exactly. You should jus clear the early areas fast and grind in the higher level later areas. You get much better leveling items there, plus the expansions from chests.
You definitely should search the entire map, but grinding early is really pointless.

I also recommend playing on Casual or Adventure difficulties first until the float bike is stronger. I remember leaving some Professional mission until the next Part came out so that I would have an easier time leveling and then go back.

Referring to the stage play here. It was the first I watched so can somebody educate me on the Japanese custom of bowing repeatedly at the end? I get that the actors show their appreciation to the audience by bowing deeply, but Ruka’s actress was led to the front by everybody, she bowed, then she headed to the center stage to bow again. It feels excessive when they’re all bowing multiple times before the end speech even started.

Also, was Ruka’s actress signaling to the rest when to rise by placing her hands near her behind right before she herself rose? I thought it was a modesty thing at first to hold her skirt but nobody else did it and it doesn’t seem it would flash during the rise either.

Tsukasa's and Yukki's VAs are just on those streams to lighten the mood between Kaki's insanely boring and dry delivery. It's always been painful to watch. The only ones that are halfway bearable are anniversary streams, because they hire a moderator with some actual emotion and usually got enough VAs on hand that they can actually carry a convo for a bit.

I seriously wish they would hire some editors to just make better summaries of updates, so they can cut out Kaki as much as possible. Who actually wants to hear the business head read presentation slides on a game stream.

For some reason Carole's second memory episode is considered a condition for the new event so might as well get it out of the way now.

Uh... this was kinda random. Carole is supposed to switch movie genres to keep things interesting for the dome citizens, so she decides to do a romance movie. When she reads up on it she discovers shoujo manga and how fucked up and extreme they are and is culture shocked. Then the book club (Minori, Maki, Seira) indoctrinate her into the genre and make her read all kinds of stupid stuff. Then she goes to Tezuka with a script that just copies all of the insane ideas at once... and she also wants to have an explicit sex scene in the movie. Except she is playing both love interests...
Tezuka obviously explodes.

I don't understand how this could possibly be relevant.

Phew... finished the event. That was quite the rollercoaster.
Well first of all, I guess I expected a bigger status quo change. It's not that nothing changed and that it didn't move certain characters forward by a lot, but they really had to do this in a way where it doesn't contradict the main story, meaning nobody can be exactly open about their knowledge or want to do anything with it.
To that end I think the only ones who got a good conclusion here are Kanata and Irene. I almost feared they would do the same with Irene as they did with the others, as in just accepting the situation and acting like before, but instead she continues on her path. She will expose the military and find the truth even Tezuka doesn't know. I think that was really cool. Tezuka actually helping Irene come to terms with the situation by pointing out what I felt (that Jamie is already inhereting someone else's identity anyway) was satisfying. Finding out that what tormented her most was that the real Irene didn't get chosen for the Seraph squad really blindsided me. Jamie really is... selfless to the end.
The way Kanata's whole growth and role are handled is genuinely superb. If you loved Kanata and Yanagi's relationship before, then this is a immensely good event. But more than that I think it's interesting how she treads the line. She doesnt reveal that she knows the truth to Tezuka (and Irene made sure not to implicate anybody else which was really smart). But she still tries to be a reassuring presence. With that dinner she figured out that Tezuka was on their side and believed in her ideals. Very good moment.

Of course that leaves me slightly disappointed with the rest. Isuzu's conclusion was... simplistic, even if expected. I find her lacking drive to investigate further a bit annoying. She basically went the Irocchi route. Miko similarily is focusing more on her personal goals than the bigger context. I thought Miko was actually pretty well used as both the one that connected everyone and also as the emotional center for a while. Her actress is just really good at making you feel empathy for her. That moment where she realizes that saving humanity is programmed into her mind instinctively was chilling
Yanagi really had the most striking emotional moment so I can't be mad about her. I do feel like she could have been more in the foreground tho.

On the less intense side, this event was surprisingly... light hearted in many places? Like really funny. And there was an insane amount of shipping being done! I guess it's expecte of an event that acts as a culmination of so much, but outside of the 31A/31B couples and the 30G pairings (sans Hisame), almost all the ships appeared and got some moments.
Seira has been an absolute menace. This yurifag is sensing gay moments through the radio waves and across time and space!

Some of my favorite moments were:
-Aina asking Akari what she loves most about Misarin (while Seira stalks them)
-Shiki being surprisingly catty and dominant towards Yanagi
-YotsuVri... just... wow. Yotsuha asking for a lap pillow is one thing, but Vri's embarrassed quiet acknowledgement and saying she should ask again after the mission as if they were planning a date hit me so hard. Not to mention the "sexual Yotsuha-san" moment
-Seira sensing Niina being proud of Asami across the dencho and actually phoning in instead of Yamawaki
-Adel being giddy about shipping Miko and Mari verbally abusing her for pot calling the kettle black
-Ichigo telling Maria to look after herself before the mission like a wife sending off her spouse

I mean the SA is clearly build around Maru-chan's new style. Boss uses instant DP breaks, Maru-chan can cheapyl DP revive. You start at -100OD, Maru-chan gives you cheap hit multipliers.

It's just that my lightning team is kind of awkward. I don't really feel Maru-chan as a buffer, maybe because she has no lightning buffs at all. Maybe I am too used to using Yunyun.
I also feel like my Yuina is really outdated, but I dont have a better lightning blaster. I wonder if I should use Christmas Fubuki somehow, I heard she is OP. But an Attacker doesnt slot in well here.

There are some difficulty specific enemies so adventure mode is still required, but yes the grinding portion should be done on casual. I'm quite a new player and managed to still clear all the professional objectives with a bike level 60 or so, it's not as hard as it seems if you just give the bosses a try! I didn't even use a "meta" team, I went with a nanamin thunder setup because I had just rolled her. I imagine a crit pierce Inori or a popular comp like that could absolutely stomp the bosses. The bike parts give you a big boost and some of them directly counter some boss abilities too

Which one did you struggle against? I would recommend you to stack some OD gauge before the boss, you could setup level 3 before you even fight one. I stacked kozuburgers to 5 before fighting one too, it's the advantage you get in an open map like this! I'd have to try to remember my exact setup sadly anon, it's just a fairly normal thunder team but I shoved Nanase in there because she's one of my favorites. Here's how my bike is setup when I'm grinding, and I swap the SP recovery to "Remove enemy def buffs" when fighting the boss that starts with one, and you can also get the stun cleanse for the other one if need be.

Oh goodness.... they added Score Attack style multiplier conditions on top of the roguelite buff/debuff elements to Wave mode? But you can only pick one at a time, so that's wild.

Okay, I have to praise the devs for once. They really retooled Wave mode to be much more fun. I think the biggest way they improved the feeling is by making all the cards you get after each fight exclusively buffs. This way you never feel like you make your situation worse just to get more points.
Having you select a regular difficulty scaling like in Score Attack and being able to choose between three unique multiplier conditions that make you play vastly different is really smart too. I have played with the debuff that makes me lose a big chunk of DP every turn, which forced me to rush Lolita full party heal and also try keep getting OD interrupts to avoid enemy turns.

Unrelated, but this light team is the most fun I head with a team comp since maybe my Year 2 ice team. Monanyan SS3 is insanely fun to use and having to juggle tokens, OD and SP with this team actually makes me use my brain. The 30G members flow well into each other and Tsukasa and Isuzu only have to jump in for light field and debuffs when they are actually needed. Excellent.

I still feel like Seira's bond episode in 5.1 was foreshadowing that Ruka was fated to be eaten by Razing Eclipse and die there. I know it's a gag, but it is weirdly fitting for how things turned out. Despite the fact that Seira says her predictions only have 53% chance of being accurate, we have always seen them come true without exception. She was clearly in a cult the worshipped her as a deity who could read the future from the stars.

Considering it's the end of the year and the only thing still ahead of us is Chapter 5 Part 3 at the very end, I feel like it's a good time to do some year end rankings.

First let's talk about this year's events and story. Obviously 5.2 left a huge impact, but the Wakki parts dragged it down a bit. It still is one of my favorite chapters in the game nontheless, especially because of how well KareTsuka were written.

As far as events go we really went all over the place. We got the introduction of "SNap Events" which I put together as they came out the same month and were clearly the replacement for one full monthly event. They were pretty fun actually and I wouldn't call them a waste of time at all. Especially Yukki's was creative and had a cool surprise ending twist. Hopefully this doesnt mean we will never get a Yukki or Yunyun event though.

I am always surprised, but even after nearly 4 years HBR can still throw out absolutely amazing events with some consistency. Maria's Tenne's and the Truth Squad's events were especially good for me. Maria's is so deceptive and first makes you think it will probably be mid, but the writing and climax were absolutely legendary. I love 31X.

Of course this was also the year the the least conventional events. Snaps aside, we got the 3rd AB collab, which was just alright, but we also got the Power Pro Baseball collab, which was surprisingly decent! We also got... ASMR. I count these as event-adjacent because of their decent length. Despite the worst fears, they turned out surprisingly inoffensive and thanks to the fact that the self-insert character is a woman, still pretty yuri. These could have been straight up memory episodes/recollections and nobody would have blinked. These were clearly written by HBR writers and not ASMR veterans.

Somehow we ended up with two swimsuit events involving Aoi and Kura respectively... Monaka's was actually good and had a point to it. The 31B one... I am so tired of Aoi.

The 3rd anni event was just wacky Maeda at full force and I still can't decide if its nrilliant or trite. Either way yuribot will stick in my memory just for how weird it was.

Speaking of weird shit, Golita the wolfchild is just... extremely random? But somehow they turned it into a good event. It did spawn some of the biggest memes of the year like the Yuina Milk stuff with Miya at least.

Miko's event was very fun, with a hard hitting ending, which I consider HBR's bread and butter. It really did do a lot of legwork towards me liking the loli squad. Hisame's event already made me kinda like them, but they've really come into their own.

Vritika and Minori's events were probably the most "forgettable" if you want to be cirtical, but Ohshima events always make me happy and Ichiks incestuous breakdown is legendary. Vritika was always the least interesting 31X character, but she has changed a lot from just being the numbers and curry girl by now. YotsuVri is also a top tier ship.

The Truth Squad event didnt go as far as I would have hoped, but its mix of comedy and tearjerker moments was perfectly balanced. Irene's stock never stops rising for me. Each appearance just cements her more as one of my top 3 characters in the game.

I did not put it on the list, because it was just the third part of a whole, but this is also the year we finally finished Nanami's Operation Perseus side mode. I have to say, story wise it was a nothing burger. I expected a lot more. But the maps got really good by the end and I really liked just this feeling of exploring HBR's world like in an open world JRPG. It turned out pretty decent all around.
I still hate the stupid bike recharge gag though...

Next I wanna talk about music. You could not separate HBR from music, it just isn't possible. Even when people have mixed feelings about some events or story choices, the music never fails. I can confidently say this year's music output was on par with any previous year. Maeda is still a genius, no matter what anybody says. Dude can make this much amazing music at such an insane pace.

I always waver between wanting to separate the Maeda insert songs from the SiL repertoire. It feels a bit unfair sometimes to put them on the same level, but there are SiL songs that I legit think are as good as some of the yanaginagi songs. So I will rank them alltogether this time.

1. Oort Cloud.
It's not even close. This is the best song this year. I could listen to it forever and the use of it in the trailer was legendary.

2. Perfect Goodbye.
Because fuck my heart, it deserves to be crushed by music this good. The first Konomi insert song and what a fucking debut. The scene it plays in obviously elevates it further.

3. Melancholic Blue
By far the best SiL song this year. The absolute catchiness, the great lyrics and the moment it played all culminate in a godlike piece. I can safely put this into my top 3 all time SheIsLegend songs.

4. White Spell (SiL version)
White Spell is White Spell, still my favorite song in the game. This version is undeniably inferior, but it's still really good. The change in some lyrics really makes a lot of difference and gives it a more unique spin, but it simply doesn't feel like a duet song.

5. This Game Needs Guns
I really did not expect to love this song so much. The 8-bit intro felt so gimmicky and silly, but the fucking build up to the chorus and the way the music breaks out of the 8-bit into full blown power instrumental really turns it all around. The way it was used in the event was also absolutely genius.

6. Kone Kone Day by Day
The first entirely original AB song in HBR. It was made for this event specifically, not reused. I never had a strong connection with GirlsDeadMonster songs and while AB has some insanely good vocal pieces, I never cared about the SiL covers. This song is so damn silly. So mundane and childish... but it is unbelievably catchy. I just can't stop listening to it even a year later. The vocals from the guest were also a nice touch. Maeda cooked (pun intended).

7. Kickin' on Heaven's Door
I had to listen to it on loop for hours to finally connect to it, not gonna lie. But ultimately this is a song that you need to get used to before you can appreciate it fully. It really rocks.

8. Asian Soul
This is the best "generic" battle theme since maybe Epic of the Valkyrie. I liked it better than 5.2's mid-boss song.

9. Good Night Seven Seas
Absolutely wasted on the mode it was played in, but a really good song.

10. Taiyokouro (Solar Route)
The best part of Monaka's event and an all around solid song.

11. Moon Day Real Escape
The 3D music video was absolutely off the charts, the best any SiL concert has ever looked! The song itself is interesting lore wise too, which elevates it. But overall it's just a solid part of any playlist.

12. Sayonara Early Summer
I wish the boss could have lasted long enough for me to actually listen to the full song!

13. Karei Naru Giho
It's stupid. I love it.

14. Honnoji no Dresscode de
This song has nothing to do with the event it plays in. It didn't even get a SiL live concert. But those drums do a lot of work.

15. Miss Moon Light
The 31A VAs having voice lines in the song was cute. It's so chill and smooth.

16. Wasurerareta Senro
Forgettable. I actually had to remind myself this was in 5.2 at all.

17. Remix Album: Alice
The remixes range from okay to good. I don't think any come even close to the original songs though. It was a nice change of pace in Operation Perseus, but I'm not so sure about the Your Profile remix being used in the actual main story.

18. Burn My Soul Powafuru Ver.
This doesn't even have vocals. I just kinda felt like it was unique enough to mention. As far as Burn My Soul remixes go, it's good. I love the horns. Somehow got that video-game baseball feel to it.

Think we'll get an extended trailer tomorrow or just another nothingburger

I am struggling to see how replacing my dark Adel with Beastmaster Adel really makes sense. They are both dark styles, but SS3 Adel does so much more damage. I guess the unlimited ults are an argument, but if Adel was your damage dealer then you would have to get a replacement...

My dear /u/ sisters, for a dumb English only sister - How good is Muua SS3 for a light team instead of Admiral Aoi? She can give more OD over a longer fight, and she synergizes with Ichiko white suit. But Aoi bless you with -1 sp use.

Well Admiral Aoi is just the universally good, so it never hurts having her on your team. Her 8SP buff is better than Muua's 8SP buff (tho Muua gets an extra turn). Her full party DP revival ult instantly fill an entire DP bar. And of course her SS1 ult is the best defensive move in the game, while Muua's AoE provoke just makes her face tank damage without protection.
Frankly with Ichiko's SP shenanigans in light, Aoi's -1SP passive has less relevance. Not to mention that most relevant light ults are cheap to use.

I think it's obvious Aoi is the better Defender and a better unit overall by far. But if you are into OD cheese tactics (especially with Yuina's front line extra turn) then having both Aoi and Muua on the team at the same time is even better. Otherwise I recommend getting an actual light buffer (preferably with multihit buff to generate OD) for a better synergy over both of these.

I assume its metafags. Their concern isnt with surviving long dungeon runs or any other situation where you need sustain. They are all about overkill and low turn cheese. The most broken thing in the game is basically killing bosses in like 2 turns with Yuina unison extea turn + OD overflow. The enemy never gets a turn so they dont need to heal.

For a normal player that shit is irrelevant. Just make a team you think is fun. And of course play story accurate where you can.
