I have to give kudos to this series (and especially the anime adaptation), because it managed to combat several of my personal dislikes and somehow made it work.I am definitely no fan of polyamory, even less so when it's harem trash. Even in yuri I could never stand it. But Watanare somehow made it work. Well for now, I think triangles are generally my limit... But what an amazing triangle this is.It honestly only works because Mai and Sena care about each other almost as much as they love Renako. To the point where most of this movie arc they spent in each other's arms instead of their crush's. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it turned out these two also hold some level or romantic interest in each other.Secondly... I really love Mai. Which is ridiculous because I hate the "princess perfect" trope, even if it is used just to have the "oh woe is me, I have to be perfect and please everyone" spin on it, like here. Then Mai is also the really annoying pushy type, which should make me want her to be as far away from the focus as possible. But nope, she is great. Something about her extreme honesty about her feelings as well as a more conflicted portrayal really got to me. I was actually sad that Mai was pushed into the background for most of the season after her arc was done. Her tenderness with Sena, her love rival, might have cemented it though.Rena, you stupid, self-denying slut... I usually hate protagonists that are wet blankets and author who use "introvert" card to gain easy points with the otaku crowd. But Rena actually feels like a real person (mostly). She is a dumbass ex-shut-in but you buy that she is an introvert gamer who is actually trying and has morte complexes than there are pages in the bible. And she really, seriously is trying to change. She went from passively getting roped into situations to being proactive. And she legit faced her own lies to herself and kicked them to the curb. Absolutely amazing finale.

I really love the way the two of them are so into each other even though they're jealous and love Renako more. It felt like she was waiting for Renako to pick one of the two or reject both so that Satsuki would be left with at least one of them but the three-way arrangement made it impossible, plus Satsuki by now has a bigger development with Renako, so it makes sense she'd wanna join in and work her way to dating the other two from there. Admittedly, it gets quite messy. As a fan I don't know how to ship four people at all. When I try to think of them together it just either becomes a messy four-way porn, which I sincerely don't like, or them rotating and pairing up occasionally, which also doesn't sit right with me. Thus, I love Watanare and want the three and then the four to be together romantically but I'm not sure what to do with it from then. If I were to read or write fanfic I wouldn't know how, if I could draw I'd just draw generic images of them having ice cream together, not super exciting. It all just feels weird yet fun.As for Kaho, so far I don't feel any romantic vibes of her towards the others, just a mild infatuation with Satsuki. I'd like it more if Teren decides to pair her up with her cosplay rival at some point.

The latter is sort of explained by deep seated mental fixation, but you would honestly think that part of her character development is to gain independence.I also need to add that Mai and Renako do have strong chemistry, which is essential for this story to work. Her and Renako are basically very similar, but with extrmely opposite starting points. Both don't want to be hated and put on an act for the sake of suiting expectations. But while Renako did this out of her own desire, Mai was forced into this position. Renako only hates herself, so she can openly tell Mai to not care what others thinks, while genuinely being unable to do the same for herself. She thinks Mai is already amazing and has no reason to ever bend to other people's wishes. She also doesn't have the social grace to pretend around Mai, she just treats her for who she really is below the mask. Meanwhile Mai will tell Renako over and over that she is worth something and deserves to be loved, even when she tries her hardest to keep up the "normal" that she can't have. Mai's patience is honestly legendary.
