I think it makes a lot of sense for where the story's at right now for Saki to basically have been mentally casting Mahiro as a villain because, as a crush (maybe even one who was crushing back to her) she represented the biggest threat of her sexuality being discovered - her greatest fear. The way she's been portrayed so far with blank evil eyes and cruel smiles was Saki being an unreliable narrator because of that. Unless it's a mistranslation, we explicitly see this chapter that part of her recollections about Mahiro were actually "words that were never spoken", and only after Saki realizes that do we see Mahiro start being drawn with light in her eyes. Kuzushiro did something similar with Tomita's expressions when she was being portrayed as a flat bully stereotype versus now Saki has realized that she's a real person.It's actually the reverse of the other characters. For Tomita and Ayano and so on, it was their inner struggles that were hidden, but here Saki was *Mahiro*'s "moon on a rainy night". All of Saki's self-loathing and terror at the idea of someone seeing through her was hidden from her view, so she just thought "oh, I must be creeping her out, huh" - and Saki really needs to learn how to deal with that this time around, because Detective Kanon is hot on her trail and will absolutely definitely figure out her own feelings sometime within a decade. Maybe two.

I read the manga to see what the fuss about. I don't think what anon said is absurd, you see this all the time with shows that never deliver obvious couples, they want to keep the audience engaged and when the couple gets together the interest slowly dies, it's not a coincidence most romances call it a day when the couple gets together, you can't just continue the story based on chemistry alone like before. Or you know some works where the main couple is basically a sure thing and then they literally create a new universe where they are not together anymore.
