Official manga spin-off "Chou Kaguya Meshi!" released its first chapter in magazine Bibibi. It takes place after the movie epilogue (but before the Ray MV?). It revolves around Kaguyabot getting her sense of taste and the cast going around eating delicious food.https://mangadex.org/title/cd3aba15-ccba-4ef4-b9c9-28f48aa5ffe1/cho-kaguya-meshiThe staff released an official fanbook made by 93 staff members called "Chou kaguyahime Thank You Book". It contains lots of art, commentaries and info from the staff. >>4591689What makes this movie so special? Why did it break Japan? What's the recipe here that makes it so enduring that it gets thousands of fanarts every week and gets featured alongside all-time great franchises in under a year?
I only noticed today that Natsuyoshi Yuko also voices Yani Neko from Yani Neko. Keep Kaguya away from cigarettes!
>>4591697Yeah that's one of the reasons why there has been so much fanart crossovers of the two series. Natsuyoshi voices a bunch of gay girls. But her role as Kaguya does show off the greatest range she has ever displayed.
>>4591691its gay
>>4591691It caters to everyone without coming off as insincere about it.
>>4591706If that was it everyone would be making yuri movies.>>4591742How do you mean?
>>4591691>>4591745Basically the movie has a little bit of everything, but none of it feels tacked on or like corporate marketing additions.>beautiful girls>hot male support cast (hot for het women and gays)>mega popular voice cast>coming of age story>high school>shounen style action>Vocaloid music for nostalgia, but also new music made by these legends, all sung by real people so normal people can enjoy it too>genuine love for the internet>VR>Vtubers>relatable protagonist>super well known fairy tale being reimagined>nearly explicit yuri, but just subdued enough that hetshitters can still pretend it's not there unless they read the extended media>deep lore BL stuff for the fujos>yuri confirmed in extended media to enhance the obvious yuri in the movie>major twists that reframe everything, giving the movie extra depth and rewatchability>family trauma>extremely high quality animation and spectacle>the pain of doomed yuri with the relief of a happy ending (suffering is unironically important for lasting impact. A movie that makes you cry tends to stick more)>songs that are so dense and interconnected that you can write music theory analyses on them>infinite easter eggs and details so it is endlessly rewatchable>one-sided/unrequited love from a supporting cast member (Roka's popularity is nearly 100% based on the fact that she has a crush on Iroha, something the movie doesn't even mention. That's how powerful this theme is)>a het supporting cast member to not completely alienate hetshitters (unironically Mami being the het rep has actually gained her some fans)>enough vague worldbuilding and background cast for the world to be expanded on in fan works>a semi-open ending that leaves some questions for people the theorize about (important, because an open and shut case is never gonna spawn as much traction)>sci-fi elements that seem both deep and are more like magic at the same time>Super otaku friendly, but never creepy or sexualized
>>4591822(continued)>a love triangle, that also isn't a love triangle, so you can cater to both sides>+the same character at different points in time so you can have two different personalities and lovers without cheating>cute mascot characters>kemonomimi>video-games>huge gaps that fans can fill out with fan content (8000 years for Yachiyo, 10 years before the Kaguyabot, and everything that happens up to the Ray MV)>mysterious enemies that you can project any intention you want on or just treat as an obstacle>a staff that will continue to deliver fanservice and fuel the hype machine on social media and with extended contentThere is probably more, but I think I made my point. CPK! is the perfect storm, with themes that resonate with mainstream audiences, otaku and the current times. And it's all in a yuri movie, which is so incredibly lucky for us.
I haven't been able to keep up with these threads the last few months. Are any of the figure preorders dropping soon? I don't want to miss out on anything if I can help it. I've already missed an absolute ton of doujinshi that went out of stock because I wasn't diligent enough and I don't want to feel that pain again.
>>4591836>figuresI actually saw something about figures on xitter recently. The SD ones that are kneeling. But I didn't save the link, sorry anon. Most merch is still acryllic stands, keychains, pins and drinking glasses.>doujinshiIt really annoys me that Japs are so obedient that most follow the stupid rule about not selling doujins digitally. It's literally pointless. So you have to hope that the doujin artist you like does mail order, but then they usually don't do those internationally either.
>>4591836Oh I found them on some other site.https://anime-store.jp/en/products/4535123852879https://anime-store.jp/en/products/4535123852886
>>4591697I slowly start to believe the conspiracy of Big Tobacco infiltrating yuri as a whole.>>4591691Netflix is the big mass market. It's something completely new to have a genuine yuri story on there. Sure, about making x character gay or y character black or so in live action movies, that usually seemed to have resonated badly with audiences for several reasons and it's a can of worms that should stay closed, it's different Netflix is no stranger to that. CPK! is just some sweet story.
>>4591837>>45918444.6k yen for each of those is crazy. How much are the scales going to cost if these are going for that much?
>>4592037Someone made some 200+ bucks horny figures, but I am not posting those. Not only is it clearly a rip-off, they also got the revival concert outfits wrong just to sexualize them more. The officially sanctioned figures they announced months ago are prolly also gonna be around 100 bucks.
>>4591822>nearly explicit yuri, but just subdued enough that hetshitters can still pretend it's not there unless they read the extended mediaAnd this is good why? That's one of the only bad things about the movie.>>4592030Wow that is just... a total word salad that makes zero sense. You haven't even remotely addressed the question just you can rant about DEI... on /u/. None of that addresses why it was such a hit. In Japan this is a phenomenon that has nothing to do with being on Netflix.
>>4592043Have you even read my post? Let me put it as simple as I can.>You haven't even remotely addressed the question>nothing to do with being on NetflixNetflix is one of the streaming giants, in Japan as well. Bigger audience = more fans. Yuri is niche, now a mainstream audience sees it.>rant about DEII did the exact opposite. I said that I'm glad that the story doesn't have to justify itself against those retards screeching about some live action Netflix stuff. I also said that this isn't worth talking about. If you want to entertain an audience like that, that's on you, I don't.
>>4592111This movie was super popular in theaters. Not just Netflix. And there are thousands of Japanese movies on Netflix that never get that kind of renown. Ribbon Hero just came out and it is not even close to CPK in popularity, despite having around similar production values.>I did they exact oppositeNope, you shoved that point in there for no other reason than to rant about it. It had no relevance to the topic. And the same idiots getting mad at Netflix adaptations have gays or black people in it would also be angry about lesbians in CPK. The actual reason they don't is because the movie is not that well known outside of Asia.
>>4592043>That's one of the only bad things about the moviePerhaps from a yuri fan perspective, although I believe the movie is clear enough about the yuri that even general audiences are aware of it. And anybody who loves the movie enough to read it's (best selling) light novel will have no means of denying the yuri anymore. But from a purely objective popularity perspective, this decision absolutely boosted the movie. There are simply many Japanese/Korean/Taiwanese people who dont want to see girls kissing on screen. And they can still enjoy the movie without being triggered. While the yuri is obvious and intentional enough that everyone else can enjoy it. In fact the lack of a kiss is what makes fan artists so much more intent on delivering it. It is similar to the semi-open ending and gaps. You need to give the audience something to add on to.
>>4591690Speaking of the Marine collab-----Marine: "I'm head over heels for you! I want Kaugya to be my daughter!"Kaguya: "Eh? You want me to be your daughter?"Marine: "Because I am so head over heels for you!"*cruuuunch*Iroha: Hah? (PRESSURE)Kaguya: "I-Iroha??"Superchats: [Captain Marine, ruuun!] [IroP is triggered!]
>>4591689Don`t know if Monster Energy originally sponsored the movie, considering there were cans of it in Iroha's appartment, but they absolutely have energy drink collabs now in Japan. Strangely fitting.
>>4591690>Thank You BookThis page is pretty interesting. It shows Iroha on a hot springs trip. So the promise they made about going to the hot springs was fulfilled. But she has longer hair so it can't be 10 years later.
>>4592302The fanarts were nearly instant.
I have been reading the Guidebook again and here is something really important that I noticed before. It's something that Nagae, the designer of the real world designs in the movie said. In regards to scens he wants people to pay attention to on a rewatch:>Another point would be the scenes that show Kaguya's cunning side. For example, the moment where she sweet-talks Iroha into playing the keyboard for her. The scene is the first time where Kaguya makes a face that seems to say "Oh~ So this is the kind of thing that makes you blush, huh? Hehe~"That scene always stood out to me so much. One thing a lot of people seem to get wrong on a shallow first impression is that Kaguya is an "airhead" or just totally straightforward in her actions. But Kaguya is actually SUPER cunning.Aside from her emotional manipulation with her crocodile tears which she did from day 1, there is indeed the keyboard scene. She noticed that performing music makes Iroha happy and immediately leverages that. She asks to perform endlessly, because she wants to always see Iroha that happy. In the first place she saw Iroha's keyboard and obviously concluded Iroha likes music. So I am almost certain she intentionally went for doing music to involve Iroha in her Vtuber career. There are many more moments like this. During the Kassen match she completely outplays Mikado in the second round and immediately psycho-analyses the guy she has barely interacted with before the match. Even mocks him for thinking she is an airheaded bimbo right there. Of course this goes along with her tactical acumen, coming up with strategies on the fly.
>>4592777Kaguya is an alien who has been around for a very long time and she absorbs information at an unprecedented rate. She is extremely cunning and the only thing holding her back is that she is rather impulsive. But people who think she did a huge 180 towards the fireworks section are simply not giving her credit. She figured out Iroha's social dynamics and intention without trouble, she just didn't bring it up till it was necessary. I mean the entire monologue about how she perceived humanity while watchintg them from the outside makes it extra obvious. She understood Iroha's whole thing with her mother pretty much immediately and even noticed that Iroha still treated her as a child who couldn't understand the nuances back then. This whole exchange was her confirming Iroha's perspective once again. There is also something fans speculated about in regards to turning herself blonde. The very first time Iroha had genuinely laughed/smirked in front of Kaguya (not counting the sarcastic laugh during their first meal together), was when she saw Kaguya as a "gyaru" in Tsukuyomi. Kaguya paid attention to that and immediately turned her hair blonde in the real world. She associated being blonde with Iroha smiling. It's easy to forget, but Kaguya's real hair color has always been that dirte blonde/brownish shade. In the Ray MV you can see it in her reflection while she watches Earth from the moon. She only stuck with the golden blonde for Iroha. Which is also why as Yachiyo she switched to the gentle silver of the moon, as her brightness has decreased and she is no longer the "shining Kaguya" Iroha cares about.Of course she also immediately understood that not only could nobody on Earth actually defeat the Lunarians, but she also accepted responsibility for her actions and still found a way to come back that satisfied all parties (if only that stupid asteroid hadn't been there).
>>4591691Aliens are hot
>>4592789And Earth girls are easy.

>>4592777>>4592784This movie is a fucking masterpiece
>>4592789Iroha pls go
>>4592890Wonder if this comm is for the fic I saw a few days ago where Iroha fucks Yachiyo while she's sitting on a piano
>>4591690>CPK! is getting featured on the NHK TV program "School of J-pop"I watched this. I can't believe fucking Trash Taste made it on an offiicial Japanese program, even if it is NHK World. Gigguk, you better promote CPK! to hell and back you goddamn hack. Put some attention on this movie! That aside, one interesting part I learned from this is that they actually made Yuko Natsuyoshi perform World is Mine while lying down on a mattress in the studio to replicate the Miku cover moment lmaoOn a more general note, if you aren't familiar with Vocaloid culture, this episode really drives home why it is so important to Japan and how basically everyone who is anything in anime or J-pop comes from the Niconicodouga pipeline. That might be another reason for you anon >>4591691 CPK literally crystalizes Jap's nostalgia for early NND and how you could be a nobody and become famous and create anything. That is exactly the feeling Kaguya creates in the movie.
>>4592777>>4592784What if Kaguya was always free to leave the Moon and the reason they bust her is interfering with a minor?
>>4593067Reminds me of some loony I saw on reddit once who went on about how Yachiyo groomed Iroha because of fate or something.
>multi track grooming
>>4591689Okay, so last thread we talked about how the Thank You book has this extremely important page that shows the Yachiyo phone from the Ray MV in more detail.Something important to note here is that this was drawn by Yamashita himself. This means whatever is going on here is the closest to his vision as we can get.So what does this actually imply?
>>4593080Well here is the zoomed in version. From what I can tell these are the specs for Yachiyo and... there is a tab for direct control and one for "AI mode. Direct control is currently active and there are the neural bridge waves. This confirms it. Kaguyabot is controlling that Yachiyo actively right now. But! AI mode implies that they can turn off direct control and let Yachiyo operate as just an AI without Kaguya's consciousness. This means that they are not seperate people, but rather that everyone who said there is an AI version of Yachiyo was correct. This is just a program who imitates Yachiyo until Kaguya takes direct control again.FINALLY this headache is over.
>>4593081>they are not seperate peopleI've said this before, but I'm amazed that theory managed to stay alive for so long, even though it obviously conflicted with everything that was accomplished in the movie. It was probably a mixture of people being paranoid that the trumpeted happy ending wasn't really happy for some reason, and others just wanting separate Kaguya and Yachiyo characters for some other reason, it always baffled me one way or the other.
>>4593084It is partially the studio's fault for staying intentionally vague about it for so long. Probably to stir discussion.
>>4593085I've also criticized the lack of clarity on this as one of the few weak points of the movie, but I'm confident the rest of it at least proved that the writing was good enough to not invalidate its own points so clamorously.
>>4593086If they had been completely clearcut about it from the start a lot of fanworks wouldn't exist right now. Being direct about some things can stifle creativity. But that is not a reason to actually withhold important info imo. The same way I would have prefered if they had a kiss in the movie and didn't cut out so much of Iroha's romantic feelings for Kaguya from the screen time. At least we had the Light Novel from week one so there was never really any room to deny the yuri, but without the novel I can see how some hetshitters could genuinely force the issue, even if anybody with a brain could read between the lines and understand that the whole movie is a love story.
>>4593088>If they had been completely clearcut about it from the start a lot of fanworks wouldn't exist right now. That's a moot point, for example a lot more het fanworks could exist if they were even more vague about the yuri vibes, but you're sacrificing the actual story for it, so definitely not worth it.If I get out of a movie not knowing what's actually going on at the end, and neither do a ton of overanalyzing geeks for months, that's bad writing.I understand that spelling everything our loud is sometimes not as elegant as clever implications and symbolism, but some authors go way overboard with it and turn it into an excuse to not do their own work, i.e. telling the damn story.
>>4593080>>4593081This isn't solved, though, at least not in the way you think. If the AI is just a Yachiyo imitation instead of something they see as her own person, why would Kaguya bother showing her this pivotal moment? Aren't the Lunarians all basically AIs anyway?
>>4593092>why would she show Yachiyo this momentShe isn't, this is literally her right now. AI mode is turned off. I don't know whether this is related to why they buried the spaceship or whether it's just symbolic or emotional for herself to see it being done as "all three of them" or whatever, but the AI isn't involved.Obviously we can speculate more, like they are gathering data for the AI to work with so it can function just like the real Yachiyo (knowing about the details of Kaguya's personal life so she can operate correctly).>Aren't Lunarians all basically AI?In a broader sense, yes. Because they are digital life forms. But they are different in the sense that they have souls. That is the entire crux of the spaceship situation. Kaguya is a digitized soul trapped inside the spaceship because it is broken and out of energy. If she was just data, she could have been transfered to any suficient data storage device, but she has an actual soul that has to be transfered into an appropiate body (this is also most likely the reason Yachiyo had a 52 hour time limit before she needed to go into maintance mod/rest). This is beyond anything a mere AI construct could be.
>>4593081On the other hand, it does also confirm that Kagyua's soul can control multiple bodies at the same time, because in that picture she's controlling both the KG body and the Yachiyo avatar at the same time. And also that it's not a big deal for her to stop controlling the Yachiyo avatar. Which seems super obvious, given her ability to control multiple Yachiyo clones simultaneously earlier in the movie, but also means that in the epilogue concert it can be Kaguya's soul in both the KG body and the Yachiyo avatar simultaneously, and that if Iroha just gets the YC body working, there's nothing stopping Kaguya from choosing between the KG body and the YC body on any given day (or possibly even no body at all, though I suspect she wouldn't often pick that option), or even inhabiting both at the same time.Honestly, I think the reason a lot of people misunderstood the situation is motivated reasoning because they simply liked seeing Iroha interact with both Kaguya and Yachiyo at the same time, but the actual answer still allows double dates and threesomes if Kaguya wants to do that (and which does seem in character for her). The interesting question to me has always been exactly how her ability to control multiple bodies works. I think it being simply a slider to control the Yachiyo avatar directly or let the AI do it implies it is not a permanent split of her soul. So is it her splitting her soul and then rejoining it once she's done, in which case while split the part of her in one body can know things the parts of her in other bodies don't? Or is she simply conscious in all of her different bodies at once?
>>4593140They already stated Kaguya's soul wasn't compatible with the YC type body, so I assume the physical body has to really fit the shape of her soul. Meanwhile in Tsukuyomi they just create an avatar, which is why she could freely alter her appearance. Under that light I doubt they will ever put Kaguya into another body or make her control one. Also let's not forget that the Ray MV implied that Iroha makes Kaguya "truly human" whatever that means, so I believe she will become a lot more organic and won't be body switching at all. As for how she controls the Yachiyo avatar in Tsukuyomi, Kaguya is still in a robot body, so her computing power should be far above a normal human's. I think having a subroutine going that she can control in the background isn't too farfetched and since she already has experience controlling multiple POVs at once this is pretty up her alley. Though she clearly needs to connect directly to Tsukuyomi for it. No mind split or anything like that. And she might not even have to do anything with her soul, considering everyone can log into Tsukuyomi and control and avatar.
>>4591689>This day marked the first day in history that a feature length original story yuri animated movie was brought into the world....Adolescence of Utena doesn't count?
>>4593175The Utena movies are based on the Utena anime. One is an adaptation, the other is more or less a sequel. CPK is a completely original movie without any source material.
>>4593170>They already stated Kaguya's soul wasn't compatible with the YC type bodyDid they? The scene I'm thinking of, with Kaguya first waking up in the KG body, only says that it's a "better fit" than the YC body. But there's not any more detail than that, certainly nothing to me that implies that it's an insurmountable hurdle rather than just a technical issue that was harder to solve than switching to the KG body for the moment. Arguably, the story at least raises the possibility for non-matching bodies in other contexts too, given Noi's interest in getting one that matches his avatar.(Post Ray MV is a different question)
>>4593325You dont make an entitre extra body with completely different parameters if there wasnt a major problem with the compatibility.>NoiI honestly have no idea what he wants with that body considering he isnt a digital soul who can body switch. And he just asked for it, Iroha never agreed to making one. And if she did it would be more like a lifelike statue till we know what Noi will even do with it.
