Why is a 22 year old PS2 game impressing me more visually than all the games released this year?
The closer graphics get to photoreal the less the devs need to cultivate an artistic style, everything becomes a shallow impression of real life and can't ever hold up to the real thing. On top of that modern rendering techniques are extremely ugly, can look at the heavy fog trend or dithered hair shaders. A strong artistic style and crisp rendering will always look nicer

People who reas books imagine whole worlds and when they see the movie/series, it's a let down because the world often won't live up to their expectations. Not everyone does this, but same still applies to video game graphics: leave more room for imagination and you might have a more immersive experience.
