Going to blow my brains out. Nothing works on windows 7 anymore, not even steam to download games. Pirated copies for everything are shitting the bed as well. :(

k bye

Yeah steam switched to zstd compression back in june/july so anything that's updated since then wont work. You could boot stick another OS and download games then transfer the completed files over but if the game ever updates again you'll have to do it again.
I just moved to Linux Mint, a little weird at first but enjoying it so far. Still have my 7 machine sitting next to me but i'm slowly using it less and less, its mostly network storage at this point.
>>
>>720915906
steamcmd might work, there's no real reason not to at least install windows 10 at this point though. iot ltsc is supported for like another seven years and it's not going to get any changes. https://massgrave.dev/windows10_eol
>>
>>720916236
Linux is just too much. Kept with Win7 because of it's simplicity and lack of bloat.
>>720916431
steamcmd works, it's really tedious though. Win10 is just bloated garbage with a disgusting phone UI.
>>
>>720917712
>Linux is just too much. Kept with Win7 because of it's simplicity and lack of bloat.
Yeah I feel ya, I jumped straight from 7 to Mint last year and it took a little adjusting but it was way less painless than I thought.
>steamcmd works
What really? Does it just not use the same compression the client does? Gonna have to try this out.
>>
>>720917712
iot is "internet of things" version, aka like smart fridge bullshit, it has most of the stuff stripped out and turned off by default. ui is still aids but i mean would you rather have a good ui or usable games
>>
>>720915906
I was a 7 holdout until last year. Finally bit the bullet and installed Linux Mint, which has been an absolute godsend. You know what you have to do, anon. It's only going to suck for the first few weeks. After that it's like you can finally breathe again.
>>
Oh noes! How could our saintly corporate platform let us down! We have trusted it completely, letting it control what and how we play, and now it stabbed us in the back!

Linux is a feature complete OS with good security standards and is resource efficient. I genuinely believe anyone still running Windows 7 and hasn't either upgraded to 11 or to Linux is an unironic retard, there's no reason to use 7, it gives you nothing at this point, it hasn't had a security update since January 14th 2020 and lots of programs have dropped support for it, so if it doesn't work you either need to use an old version or somehow find a patch that does.
Just use fucking Linux, it's all private, no chance of viruses, all the games work except for shit like League of Legends and Rainbow Six Siege (lmao) or upgrade to 11.

I'm glad you're treating a free and open source OS as another cult already, but some actually have good reasons for doing neither. At least for the time being.
>>

Good.
But also you're still wrong.

>so if it doesn't work you either need to use an old version or somehow find a patch that does.
Not unlike trying to find a way to get something troublesome to work through wine, huh?
>all the games work except for shit like League of Legends and Rainbow Six Siege (lmao)
Those stopped working on 7 long ago anyway.

>Just use fucking Linux
I'm using both.
>>
>>720919092
So your device is on the ESU program and you have the 2023 update installed on your machine? No? Okay doesn't matter it's still 2 years old, wouldn't run it on my network. I don't understand what you gain from using Windows 7 at all.

I will cherish my brothers and help them as much as i'm able to, even if i've moved on to linux myself.

kex/kernel extenders has done a fucking amazing amount of work for porting system calls back

Do you know what SQL Injection is what buffer overflow exploits are? Cars and OSes aren't comparable and you know that. No reason to use Windows 7

I made the switch to Mint a few months ago after getting tired of massaging every game and app to keep them alive on 7. Honestly, the hardest part was just untraining the years of habits. Once I got past that, it was like waking up from a coma. Everything's snappier and I don't have Microsoft breathing down my neck. Just had to let go of the “Windows or bust” mindset. Stay strong, anon, the green penguin awaits.

Can I change my Win10 PRO (legit key) to LTSC?
I can't update to 11.

Time to upgrade to Windows 8!
>>
>>720923130
8 wont fix it, also lacks ZSTD compression.
>>
>>720916236
>You could boot stick another OS and download games then transfer the completed files over but if the game ever updates again you'll have to do it again.
Not necessary, you can point steam's install folder to a separate drive or partition, then have both versions of steam on each OS use that. Or just forcibly update win7 steam to the new version and continue on like nothing happened.
>>
>>720923130
8/8.1 is even less supported everywhere than 7.
>>
>>720915906
Just use Linux already if you care that much.
>>
>>720923159
>also lacks ZSTD compression
What does this even mean? Just get a compression utility that supports zstd
>>
>>720915906
No, keep suffering because some screenshot on an article about how Windows 11 is stealing your toilet paper rules your life.
>>
>>720925451
>you can point steam's install folder to a separate drive or partition, then have both versions of steam on each OS use that.
You're still having to swap OSes just to download vidya, which isn't ideal in any world.
You could use https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader at least but again, cumbersome.
>Or just forcibly update win7 steam to the new version
That's not really how that works

>>720926425

Have you read what you linked? It's a compression algorithm. It can work as a standalone archiver program or as part of an existing archiver.
>>
>>720929935
And your solution to adding that to the current steam client?
Keep in mind Valve didn't even do it, Win10 PCs required an update to support it and previous versions of the client don't.
>>
>>720930181
>And your solution to adding that to the current steam client?
His solution. He's definitely clueless about some things but you're retarded.
>Keep in mind Valve didn't even do it
They refuse to support older Windows versions. Despite the newer ones being generally worse.
>b-but oldbad!
Debatable, but either way it was absolutely Valve doing it.

The proper solution would've been updating their shitty corporate client to support it. Via a third-party library if need be. Those already exist. Already have to be used for Linux-based OSes as this standard was imposed. Might as well use it here to.
>>
>>720930529
>The proper solution would've been
Yeah that'd be nice huh, but we're in the 10toddler era soon to be force into 11 so wishful thinking about how things should have been isn't going to help anon play vidya.
>>
>>720915906
Can I have your Steam account?
>>
>>720929935
Yeah, no one's arguing what ZSTD is, the issue is the Steam client relying on it for compression while older OS versions don’t natively support it. You can’t just slap a zstd.exe in the folder and call it a day. Valve shifted the backend and now you either patch the client yourself, rely on depots, or suck it up and move to an OS that speaks the same language. It's not about unpacking a .tar.zst-it’s about the client expecting compression support at the system or API level.
>>
>>720931186
Yes, but you really could have simply said that they're using a networking protocol that uses the compression algorithm instead of all that. "Speaks the same language" and "don't natively support is" is very roundabout.
All they had to do was add an option to use a third-party library for that. Or even feed it via pipes (or shared memory, or even fucking sockets) into another program and then do the checksum verification on the files in the destination directory like they are doing anyway. But they've probably fired all competent programmers and have what they have now.
>>
>>720915906
Go speak Dutch, you fucking Amish.
>>
>>720927983
I know what's zstd, retard. What the fuck does zstd support have to do with the OS? It's a 100% userspace implementation.
>>
>>720935216
So you should have no trouble getting the pre 109 CEF steam client to download and extract the new zstd compressed files right? You'd be a hero to many.
>>
>>720915906
I finally "upgraded" to W10 last year because of Dolphin and other emulators stopped supporting W7. And, boi, what a piece of shit it is. I've been debloating this shit for a year and still have 100 useless tasks running in the background.

At least it's not W11, now that's a shitfest.
>>
>>720935365
So the problem isn't the OS. No one cares about your autism.
>>
>>720935974
So you should have no trouble getting it to work on steam, correct?
>>

Yeah, update your Steam.
>>
>>720936235
>Steam can't update on 7
