>>721022550My grandpa left me a ugly wood table made of tree trunks. It weighs half a ton, would probably survive the end of the world, is ugly as sin, and moving it takes 8 people working together - with mechanical help. Thanks grandpa
the one on the left isn't hard to maintain, it's hard as fuck to move. that's the kind of shit where even if you call 5 people and bribe them with a dinner out you just give up because you can't even pick that fucker up without it turning into a chinese live leak video.

Furniture? In this economy!?
>>721022550the really sad part is the person in the image somehow destroyed the beautiful furniture he got from his grandparents
>>721023268i assume the maintaining would be dusting it. all those nooks and crannys over time would have tons of dust buildup and would make it look ugly due to the color contrastalso prolly keeping it out fo any kind of direct sunlight so it doesnt get sunfaded ruining its look
>>721022865>hard to maintain upkeepYou don't need to do shit with antique furniture.Meanwhile Ikea crap starts bowing and deteriorating if you put anything that weighs more than 5lbs on top of it.
>>721023576if you actually had kids they would toss your video games to the trash bin. Also since you don't have any kids nor will ever reproduce, somebody else is gonna do the same shit. Maybe sell one that is valuable, but trash the rest.Cope.
i dislike the cardboard furniture with a plastic shell very much. nothing is more low quality slave-caste than that garbo. it's not even peasant-tier since even that lot had proper wood furniture
>>721022865False dichotomyLeft probably weighs a ton and is no more functional for all of it's opulenceA nicely formed structure you can paint would be preferable

>>721024398>take sooooooooooo much effort to clean! The sad thing is that back then, even working class people had enough time to keep everything clean. A family could be easily supported by one income, so the mother could spend some time cleaning herself even if they didn't have a servant. Nowadays nobody has time for anything because everyone's a wageslave being milked for every possible nanosecond of available time, even by entertainment and ads

>>721024423Back then, the china cabinet was cheap and the china was seen as valuable. Now the china is worthless but the hardwood materials for the china cabinet alone costs hundreds. Which is why furniture is made of compressed dust and plastic now.
living on a big house and having old furniture as well as giant chandeliers I can say fuck all this I rather have simple furniture, cleaning is a nightmare

>>721025450wood has fallen
>>721025450This just means modern lumber is harvested from more efficiently grown trees that grow bigger, faster. You can see each year's growth is more significant than the old wood. If anything this means a drastic increase in lumber output because you can harvest much faster. It's like comparing shitty pre-columbian maize to a modern ear of corn.

>>721025450Are they blasting growth hormone on trees now?Or is this a disingenuous image showing wood made from two different trees and pretending it has something to do with time?

>>721025450Wasn't there some initiative to selectively breed trees to get better wood quality AND fast growth?
>>721025450How do we know for sure that the bottom tree is actually from 1918?
>>721026141Sure, but it's generally milled poorly and is softer/more fragile. New, farmed wood isn't inherently worse but high quality lumber is harder to find and more expensive. You can go to your local orange blue or green and get pine with the same structural integrity as a bendy straw for a couple bucks. Then look up at all the new "luxury" apartments going up in your city and realize that's what they're made out of. My house was built in the 50s. The code was lax but the materials were all rock solid. Now the code sets a much higher bar but all your new construction is slapped together with a bunch of bullshit (and btw these builders are not strictly following the code anyway)

>>721022550>grandkids Having kids in this shithole world is the most golem behavior one can partake in.
>>721025117>corporate bottomline matters above all elseNo. Customer choice matters above all else. And what you refer to as "neoliberal" is really just an understanding of basic human nature. In this case, that people buy more of what is cheaper and less of what is pricier. This isn't some grand conspiracy or symptom of malicious greed; it's just how humans act.Consumer consistently choose cheaper, crappier garbage made overseas rather than pay the premium for better and/or domestic goods. There isn't some secret cabal of malicious execs scheming to keep MADE IN AMURICUH goods off the shelves; there simply isn't nearly enough of a market for them.Another quick lesson in human behavior: people want premium labor, but cheap goods and services. They're not completely mutually exclusive, but they're near enough to be so. "Neoliberals" want the market -- i.e. consumers -- to make their own choices. "But, I'm so smart that I can control the market!" No.
>>721026559There is nothing better than a regular structure, like it or not. I'm tired of retard architects forcing visible concrete, 10 meter long windows with no pillars inbetween and stupid shapes, etc, fully knowing that they make a house ridiculosuly expensive for no reason compared to a regular pile distribution and prestressed beams for floors. Visible concrete looks like a prison.
>>721026559Yes, but the biggest driver of cost is from the vast amount of glass and fittings, as well as the more complicated structure/design.
>>721027159Enjoy shit looking irregular and unappealling against the skyline
>>721027248Lets say this is the case, since I can't ID species via grain pattern like my dead grandpa. It is still new growth (pine) vs old growth.Old growth tends to be more durable specifically because of all the tight compounding layers, if the pine in question was given greater time to mature before harvest the growth rings at the center could be somewhat denser, giving higher quality lumber.
