Has the "you are the villain all along" trope ever been good?
>act like a villain to proceed>do I have too?>yes>ok>*acts like villain*>WOOOOOOOOOOW DUDE LOOK HOW LE BAD YOU ARE!!! YOU'RE A PIECE OF SHIT!!!!so glad I got this piece of shit for free
>shoot a bunch of violent sandpeople>shoot a bunch of burgers gone rogue>shoot a bunch of glowies making everything worseHow does this make me a villain again? I am fighting objectively evil forces.
>>721063030Don't forget that if you call this shit out then "you just didn't understand, filtered, why so mad xD" etc.
already an edgy ass thread for teenagers
>>721063263he demonstrated in his own post that he didn't understand and used all caps, so yeah, he got filtered and is mad
>>721063320>board full of edgy teenagers>edgy teenagers say edgy shitWOOOW big surprise grandpa. Now tell me, what the fuck are you still doing here in your mid 30s, you waste of space failure in life?
>>721062950It was good in Kotor. Not really in much else
>>721062950No, because most writers are hacks, and videogame writers are even hackier. The only way I can see it working is if you're not forced to take evil actions to progress the game, otherwise it just devolves into a massive disconnect between what the character is supposed to feel (I am responsible) and what the player feels (the Devs forced this outcome). Then again most people misunderstand the line, you're not walker, you're the imaginary entity that he's "just following orders" of, his psychosis.
Saints Row 2 kinda does it but it's not really a twist it's more some people realise you're a fucking psychopathThis is counter balanced by The Boss's extreme loyalty to anyone who is in his gang however so it's not just edgy pointless nihilism
>>721062950>>721063030>anon watch a movie that has an evil protagonist>WTF WHY DOESNT THE MOVIE ALLOW ME TO MAKE THE CHOICES? IS IT SAYING THAT I AM EVIL TOO?!
>>721062950WH40kSure, the imperium fights cosmic horrors, aliens and demons, but in process of doing so, they have become soulless monsters
>>721063263Yes, that's what we say when you get filtered.
>>721063446nigga you're looking into a mirror, be real
>killing people badLmao there are perfectly justified morally good reasons to not just kill someone but to genocide entire populations.Never have I felt like a villain in any game with that trope.
>>721063030I liked the voice acting and animations getting more agressive but that's it
>>721063682This kekOr reading a book. >"NO! DON'T KILL THE CHILDREN, IDIOT! THAT'S NOT WHAT I WOULD DO?!?"
I think every week when this mindbroke thread is up, someone find out about this game, download it and also get mindbroke, comes back next week to post about how the game is actually bad. It's a cycle, i'm noticing.
>STILL madIs this the greatest filter ever?
>>721063030(You) are not Walker.
>>721063960>n-no uI'm sure you can do better than that, grandpa.
>>721062950The ending of hotline miami 2 was ok does that count
>>721063446i was a teenager when this game released, is my excuse. somehow people here are still bitching about it?
>>721064504And did the story change in the meantime or what the fuck are you trying to say? What was shit back then is still shit now, why aren't people allowed to talk about it? The topic doesn't come up THAT often here to justify you bitching about people bitching about it.
>>721064726it's always posted here, newfriend. same thread, same "debates." you're not here to change your mind about anything. no analysis, no insights. just spite.
>>721063682>>721064019You can spot the samefagging due to the identical thought and the reddit spacing

>>721063030but I dont self insert
>>721062950the witch's house got pretty damn popular playing this trope for an rpg maker game
>>721062950Spec ops did this pretty well. If you play blindly it's just an average TPS until the end. People bitch about being forced to do evil shit, but we've been doing evil shit in games for a long while. The Line just rubbed some salt in the wound and it felt great. /v/ just hate it because it became popular, still, a lot of games do the same thing and get away just for being indie titles.
I dont get it. So when you people watch movies or tv shows you see yourself as the main character of the movie or tv show?
>>721062950Yes but not in a lot of games. I think it's good when they do it in a subtle way like Assassin's Creed 3, not Rogue. What I hate the most is when the game has everything set in place for this trope only for the writers to advocate for the protagonist. That kind of missed opportunity screams bad writing.
>>721062950Yes.
>>721062950No, can we finally nuke israel?
>>721062950The game that filtered /v/None of you are ready to appreciate games as an art form
>>721062950Killzone 1 to 3 did it pretty good. You're very specifically the villain, you're just being told you're the good guy.Shadow Fall way overdid it by having literally half the dialogue in the entire game be your mission control telling you to hurry up with that genocide so you can finally achieve racial supremacy. It is genuinely baffling how game journalists at the time didn't complain more about it.
>>721063597>The only way I can see it working is if you're not forced to take evil actions to progress the gameThat's because you're an unimaginative pseud with no true appreciation for the medium.
>>721062950I think this game reveals a flaw in the way people think about morality. They think immoral acts are done by Bad People who do Bad Things because they want to. Even though the game explicitly tells you, in dialogue, right before the WP scene, that you don't always have a choice, people still insist there should have been. The idea that you can't just resolve the issue by picking the Good Choice trips them up. They would never pick the Bad Choice because they're Good People. Unfortunately, many video games model morality in these same simplistic terms.
>>721062950The stupidest and most unrealistic thing about this game is how Walker and his men react to things.Americans, specially American soldiers, are psychopathic, if some US army mooks "accidentally" WP'ed a refugee camp, they would laugh about it and go on with their day like nothing happened.
>>721070616You sound like a real psychopath here.
>>721064052It's right there with Fallout new vegas turning retards into troons because of sex-exclusive dialogue choices and perks.
>>721069748But is that situation really a no-choice road ? Wasn't the whole point that everything could have been avoided if Walker had evacuated immediately, given that they were a scout team with incomplete information anyway? They went into the lion's den like some Bruce Willis, thinking they could act like heroes.
>>721062950>we need a weapon for the bad guys in the game>say no more
>>721063682>>721064019>redditor who yells kino at everything can't differentiate between videogames where you control the character vs books/movies where you are reading/watching a character
>>721062950Nier Replicant?
>>721069126>Uh, you just have no imagination >Doesn't provide an example of where it can workWhat a waste of a comment. >with no true appreciationI don't know what that's even meant to mean. That aside yeah, much like the White Phosphorus scene, any time a game forces you to take an evil action to progress it, it results in a disconnect between the two entities (or at least under the "walker=the player" idea of the game), which is why so many people get asshurt about the game.Which makes them think that the Devs are pseuds.
>>721064069The game explicitly shames you for playing it. Which, to be fair, you should be ashamed for playing this pretentious and janky piece of shit
someone spoil me, can you be "evil" in the outer worlds? I'm doing a revenge "board" playthrough because everyone else is insufferable and so far what they make you do is pretty tame
>>721062950It blew 17 year old me's mind, but now i just think it's stupid. How can i ever possibly be the villain? Just impossible....
>>721079418>Doesn't provide an example of where it can workThis thread is about that very example.

>>721062950Crackdown 1Turns out the voice in your head telling you KILL KILL KILL isn't a good guy after all.
