if magic is just more colorful guns/bows then its boringmagic should require prep and ritual and specific circumstances and then be incredibly powerful but a real pain in the assthe mages gameplay in the game should be entirely different from other classes. The places you go and what you do are entirely separate. (exploring akashic records that are full of puzzles or elemental plains or something where you can be more like 'guns but more colorful)Each class should be at least 50% its own unique game focused around the class' theme, only coming together for certain central goals.In such a thing a wizard would require martial protection to actually go to worldly places and have a chance to flex their magic because anyone could just rush the wizard and kill it before it can perform its elaborate setup.

Have enemies constantly cast shit too, but non-wizards have a limited selection of spells and spell-like abilities tied to who/what they are.Domination mesmers from Guildwars 1 was great in that aspect, with their interrupts, blessing/curse stacking/recycling, etc. Force players to have to deliberately cancel long casts in favor of something faster and more opportunistic , rather than simply timing and spamming things.

Get AOE spammed by platoon or division's worth of mundane/magical artillery until you close the distance or exit the area all together.You can snipe important enemies here or there, but if that's going to be your full strat, prepare to get punished or face insane amounts of tedium.
