Why did XCOM games die (again)
>>
>>721300806
I don't think people remember how bad xcom2 was on launch
The WotC literally rebuilt the fucking game it was that bad they had to abandon the original to fix it
>>
>>721300924
xcom 2 was fine, people just shit their pants over turn timers + random spawns because they couldn't overwatch creep x100 and didn't adapt. WOTC has it's own flaws some of which are just glarinh like the Lost which just pad out mission length with their absurd numbers.
Only shit thing I'd say about base xcom is 95 aim swords which is pure trolling from the devs. Xcom 1 had 90% missiles that at least still did damage if missed.
>>
>>721300806
Capeshit killed it.
>>
>>721301756
This. I liked XCOM2, the time limits mean you have to actually play agressively. I'll never get why time limits are such a huge filter for so many people across every single genre.
>>
>>721302063
Because the main strat of XCOM2 is overwatch crawl, and having a timer puts a big alien wrench on that.

>the gameplay was fine
Anons, the game regularly shit itself, took upwards of minutes to load on top tier hardware and it relied on mods to unfuck it

I'm not talking about the gameplay.
>>
>>721302063
Most people enjoy playing games like a tank, just blasting and rolling over all opposition at a slow and steady pace.
Speed increases the tension and tension is something which is highly subjective.

It ran on my old gaymen laptop of the time so it couldn't have been that bad. I think it was also the first game I actually installed to the 128gb SSD it had. I remember the new Deus Ex game of the time was also insane for load times on my HDD. It was less the game and more most people weren't rocking SSDs and if they did it was for OS mainly

Firaxis self implosion.
>>
>>721300806
For a second I thought that was Joanna Dark and Elvis
>>
>>721300806
Firaxis is brain damaged and fired Jake "The Golden God of Turn Based Gaming" Solomon from their turn based gaming focused company after marketing Marvel Xcom like it was an action game and then being surprised when no one knew about it or bought it
>>

>I don't think people remember how bad xcom2 was on launch
what
it was good, except loading times
difficulty-wise it's better than WOTC where legendary difficulty is equal to pre-wotc commander.

Because X-COM [1994] is the pinnacle of turn-based tactics alongside Jagged Alliance 2, after the first game there was nowhere else to go.
Apocalypse had lots of potential and is a great game but unfortunately it a mess of a game.
>>
>>721305114
For me it was how ugly it looked, the xcom engine wasn't built to have closeups of character faces
>>
>>721311018
Jagged alliance is more an RPG with turn based combat
>>
>>721311018
>bring a rookie with the worst psi stats possible
>load him up in the middle of the squad with live grenades in all slots
>go after a landed massive ufo mission
>turn 1 hilarity ensues
>>
>>721302248
it ran fine on my intel integrated graphics laptop.

The way they did turn time limits solved the problem of overwatch creep, but created another problem where you're now over-incentivized to play fast and aggressive. So it just shifted what the objectively right strat was, it didn't solve the underlying issue.

Also, as someone who legit beat the game first try, I was personally offended when I had to play gay ass guerilla warfare because everyone else was a scrub. I also hated the alien redesigns (idc if they're spliced with human DNA) and general artstyle changes. Advent (the majority of enemies) playing just like humans made combat far less asymmetric and thus boring. I hated the aesthetic of the Advent cities too.
>>
>>721300806
I hate that Xcom Apocalypse is mostly ignored and dead now because having Xeno Troopers with their own unique abilities were goddamn awesome
>>
>>721301756
>xcom 2 was fine,
NTA all my friends were complaining about random crashes wiping their save files. It was not fine.

Where's the problem exactly.
The timers aren't even strict, and being slow is a bad thing if you're fighting an inferior force.

>playing just like humans made combat far less asymmetric and thus boring
Half the first game was taking potshots back at forth with Sectoids and Thin Men

Modded WOTC is worse than UFO with OXCE, but i still think its quite fun. It's quickly become one of my favorite moddables.
>>
>>721318516
i dont wanna and i do not enjoy
maybe if they figured that out they wouldn't have a dead franchise on their hands. Sorry!
>>
>>721302063
I think some of the time limits were absolute bullshit where you had a handful of turns for something that needed at least double that amount
>>
>>721301772
You're correct on multiple levels.
>>
>>721300806
x-piratez is being updated regularly tho
>>
>>721300806
Firaxis's key personnel leaving and the whole company imploding over Midnight Suns flop and the even harsher CIVII flop.
>>
>>721300806
i miss the old ones charm, terror from the deeps was beautiful and scared the shit out of me when i was a kid.
wish they made it with this art style and feeling and not the cartoony faggy ones of today.
