The first time I encountered it was Vivienne de Fer in Cisquisition. She's just a random noblewoman from a country that is clearly supposed to be Fantasy France where the rest of the population is white. There is no fucking reason for her to be black. And they put her front and center in the advertising despite her not really being a big character at all, clearly trying to advertise how inclusive they were being. It was sort of the canary in the coalmine for what they were going to do in fantasy casting for the next few years. Sort of how Rings of Power put Durin's wife front and center in the advertising despite her not being a character at all in Tolkien's work and barely even a character in the show.That's the thing with this shit. It's the laziest garbage ever. All they have to do is give them a backstory that they're from a faraway land and there's not really a problem, but they take the shit option intentionally. It feels like some kind of "Emperor's New Clothes" test, but I don't even know what they're testing.

And the reason is usually either the people behind it suck at world building or they’re trying to push idpol shit. Isabella is the most well known example. Even the darker ones didn’t look black they just looks like say darker arabs/levantines nothing sub Saharan about them.

Dragon's Dogma 2 getting the “diversity revamp” was just a matter of time-especially after how much Capcom has been chasing overseas acclaim. You can tell it’s less about worldbuilding and more about ticking boxes when you get random dark-skinned nobles in alpine Euro villages and not a word on where they came from. At least FromSoft still understands atmosphere and cohesion.
