Regardless of what happens it will be defended to the death by people who would have loved them no matter what. All they want is more time with the characters. It doesn't matter if it's tedious, boring, nonsensical, badly written, insulting to your intelligence, utter trash. You could make a 100 hour game set in Seventh Heaven and they'd like it, because they get more time with the characters. At some point they became obsessed with the characters, but don't actually care about the story or the game they're in.
