Video games became institutionalized and their culture of origin changed. During the 90s and early 00s the people who made video games were Computer Science Nerds, who either were obsessed with the technology itself or the artistic expression the technology allowed them to have. The media these people consumed was also quite different from today, you must remember that the people who made games until the 6th generation grew up largely without the Internet and got their ideas from books, movies and magazines. The people who came afterwards and who are making games for the big publishers today are basically just codemonkeys compared to these guys. They are some deadbeat college student who gets tricked into a degree to become a video game developer, during his time he learns from pozzed university professors without job experience how to make modern “games”, with that useless degree he will apply for a job by one of the big studios who are owned by their publishers, and these studios use him like a slave to create a game after the designs made by crony crayon-munchers from the marketing department. In the past, most developers were permanent employee, today most people you see in the end credits are temp workers. The nature of game design also changed, in the past video games were used as a proof of concept for the technology that run them, today's games try to exploit human behavior and psychology to make them addicted to subscription models. Alternatively, the game is just a front for more devious activities, like XCOM: Chimera Squad titel which is mining data about how you use your computer and sends it to Amazon, Microsoft, Google and XSolla.

>>721551835It's true. The death of gaming (really all entertainment) is a blessing in a disguise. I naturally moved into new territory I never imagined I would 5+ years. Woodworking. Metal. Drilling. Tapping. Cutting. Automotive. I love it. I finally feel closer to the man I should have become years ago were it not for videogames. I'm still interested in the medium and especially building custom PCs but it's a lot less of my daily life than it used to be and I'm thoroughly enjoying learning and building skills in those new areas every day.

Modern games are a million times better than games from the 80s and 90s. What you have is nostalgia. Without it, those games are objectively bad. If they were released today, your favorite game would get a 50 - 60% on steam and be forgotten in a week.
>>721554436Both are true. You can find documents claiming that youths are going to shit as far back as 4000 years ago.The thing to take into account, is that regardless of when this statement was true or not as we did have times of peace and stability and times of crisis and famine, one thing is the progression of humanity and each culture in a lineal fashion, and another is how each individual experiences the flow of time. Humans are made partly due the context they live and are raised within and our biological, hardcoded needs, and that's something that took us millions of years to develop that won't go away with a handful of centuries of society.Adults and older people will always bitch about youngsters and how "they're ruining us" and vice versa.Did you know that teenagers getting angsty and rebellious is ltierally hardcoded in our DNA and the DNA of most mammals? it's a natural impulse to challenge status quo and authority to help our brains seek independence and flee from our parents nest. Of course, this doesn't mean we have to be assholes to them, but that it is expected to desire to not be with them all the time, similar to how crankyness on older people (and animals) might be a way for nature to distantiate them from the rest of society, given their time to dominate is over.
>>721561212Shut up zoomer. You've never played amazing games unless it's a shitty remake of something objectively better.

>>721561883Have you tried not being creepy weirdos that smell like piss?
Money is what happened.GDC used to be run by the founder, speakers were all people who had made and published successful games, and the whole thing wasn't designed to turn a profit. Then in the mid 90's, suddenly the investors stopped looking at videogames as a fad, and instead as a new product to profit off of. Suddenly the founder was kicked out of his own conference, price to attend tripled overnight, and they brought in literal who's to tell developers how they should make their games. The rest of the industry soon followed.
>>721561938How else am I supposed to mark my territory?

>>721559479that looks cool so i tried looking into how to draw custom characters, and it seems like a messcharacter data isn't in the repo, but in some big zip file instead, as cryptic sprites with the actual definitions and presumably meshes(?) in pk3 filesmaybe they inherited this mess since it seems to use idtech, but i can't be assed to wade through it all just to add catgirl maids
>>721568331In the game install folder, there's a folder labeled "kartmaker". There are a bunch of template you can use there and a readme with instructions on how to make it work.>idtechHahahahahahah It's a fork of a fork of the "Legacy DOOM" engine from like 1998. You have to use SLADE to open the .pk3 files.
>>721551960Ok but why is he depicted as Johnny Test?
>>721568732>>721568331Oh, also, because the game is a Legacy DOOM fork, it's limited to 256 colors. The game uses that row of pale greens (96-111) as the "placeholders" for the unlockable character palettes which is why all the characters sprites are green in SLADE. ASEprite has a preset palette you can use for this.
Sometimes you don't have to mod a game to get t&a.
>>721559218>You had to respond to my post twiceno seriously, you're way too conceited for your own good
>>721551635Those nerds never learned to stand up for themselves so people never were aware who really made the good stuff. Games are still more associated with the publishers name not with the actual creators.Anyways, I'm having fun with Songs of Conquest.Smaller studios are back and since they are so small, they just make games they themselves enjoy.
The real problem is like 20% of the nerds trooned out and now align themselves with the people who used to hate them. And now the people that used to like them hate them. Culture is permanently fucked until we fix this.
