>DKC returns is only ever mentioned when referencing how tropical freeze is better
>still blows out every other platformer on the Switch
What the fuck? Why did none of you say anything about how full of soul and how great this game is? All I ever hear is that Tropical Freeze is the better game which lead me to think this was going to be just average, but it's actually such a fantastic game.
It has literally all you'd want from a platformer:
- Great level design that you can tell was crafted by people who've been in the industry for decades, does a great job incentivizing exploration with pretty decently placed secrets, teaches you core concepts and then gradually tests your comprehension and skill with them, which is helped by the fantastic visual language the game has to communicate said concepts to you
- Multiple collectables, with both a set collectable (KONG) and a variety collectable (puzzle pieces). Star coins in Mario are retarded in comparison, as there always being 3 always leads to the devs getting lazy in the ladder half of those games with their placements, which distorts the perceived value of them. KONG allows for an easy collectable that doesn't have to be too hidden while allowing for puzzle pieces to be super hidden and locked behind bonus room rewards.
- Great challenge starting from World 1 in the form of time attack. Having time attack award you gold medals was a great choice, since it's listed alongside the other collectibles, meaning players go for it to fully "complete" the levels, even if it's not necessary for 200%ing the game. The times required for golds are pretty demanding, encouraging players to get better at the game, and providing difficulty for any level that felt too easy.
And obviously, great movement.

is this a bot or are you referring to the fact that i chose an image of HD instead of the Wii cover?
i have no idea why you'd want to play the Wii version of this game though given the retarded control scheme

I agree that the game is pretty great. I really liked the forest world, it looked really great. The bonus levels from the 3DS are amazing, more fun than the floating platform ones in TF. Wish they hadn’t fucked up the coop bouncing though. Mario Wonder is great too though, just does different things

Yeah I think I got the wrong impression of this game from trying it co-op first. Definitely not a strong suit of this game, and that is in NSMBs favor at least.
As far as Mario Wonder though, I'd agree it excels at different things, but like all Mario games since World, it lacks any real challenge, which is disappointing. Even just including the gold medals in DKC returns allowed for challenge to exist in the form of expecting players to get great at the mechanics, in levels that were otherwise easy.

remake butchers a bunch of effects. best way to play is the wii with gecko cheat code to disable motion controls

HD isn't a remake and also Wii version doesn't have the 3DS levels
is there a patch for the 3DS to run at 60fps? that'd probably be more ideal i guess
it's annoying it butchers a bunch of effects but i can't imagine it's actually that big of a deal in practice. at least, probably not in the way that bluepoint ""remasters"" usually fuck with the games.
