Hillbillies are theoretically from the Appalachian mountain area, while rednecks are just stupid inbred country hicks from the south in general, but the words are pretty interchangeable now I recently saw a program about where certain American phrases and words come from, and both of those have roots in the scottish settlers who came here hundreds of years ago, oddly enough
