banjo bros...we are genuinely, fully, pulchritudinously back
>>
I boughted it because Playtonic is gonna get shuttered by next year and I feel bad for the small handful of former Rare staff there. I played for about an hour, it's improved but I'm skeptical about the rest of the game. The first world was the strongest in the original game and then it took a nose dive by the third world.

I'm glad they put some distance between Yooka-Laylee and Banjo-Kazooie in terms of presentation. Being so blatantly derivative did it no favors.

Whoever decided to put totals on the loading screen deserves a kiss on the cheek.
>>
>>723267164
i felt the same way & i just 100%ed world 3 last night. in the OG, that shit was unplayable. here it's just about as good as world 1. the game is a serious improvement.

Everyone who chose to make him their enemy has completely imploded.
>>
>>723266686
I was a Kickstarter backer and never even finished the first game. By the time I got to the Casino I just dropped it completely. This time around, everything seems to be pretty good, but I don't know how much different it really is beyond the new opening and the new arcade games. I guess I'll see if I finish it this time.
>>
>>723267164
it seems like it's succeeding. i hope playtonic stay in business. would like to see them branch out and make diverse games like rareware had the opportunity to do.
>>
They turned a 5/10 game into a 7/10, not very impressive. The level design is still not great, and there is no reason to even collect half of the stuff in the game. This game severely needs a small 100% post-game level and true final fight.
>>
>>723266686
I never bothered playing Yooka Laylee because they canceled JonTron and that the game was apparently dead on arrival full of bugs and being more a boring BK clone hopping on nostalgia bait, I spent a long time thinking YL was just Banjo-Kazooie’s Mighty No 9.

But this looks genuinely good so I’m willing to try it out.
>>
>>723269553
Personally it would have to be a legit 10/10 to get me past how they snubbed JonTron. Otherwise, I just can't be bothered. I'm sure it's fine, but I'd need to hear rave reviews and this just ain't it.

The third world is actually amazing in replaylee
Also it's doing well on Switch 2 and the physical isn't even out yet.

the funny thing is, Jon literally only voiced one character in one level, and it's just random grunts and yells that you can't even tell it's him unless you really know his voice

and they tanked the game's reputation over removing those few grunts and yells
lmao

Them removing JonTron was such a shitty move because A) Jon was right about everything and the "controversy" was entirely fabricated, and B) Jon's Banjo Kazooie video was the main reason why I and many others were interested in Yooka-Laylee to begin with.

It really soured me on the studio because they no longer felt like an underdog trying to create something great after getting screwed over by Microsoft, rather they felt like just another corporation looking out for themselves and doing exactly what Microsoft would have done in that scenario.

I love this fat bitch like you wouldn't believe
>>
>>723270987
I only loved him when he reviewed vidya
once he got bought out by Screenwave and started doing videos on a set with half the video being set/prop/costume jokes, it just went to shit
>>
>>723270763
>>723270331
>>723267943
Reset era fuck them over. The company listen to them and got fuck over. FAGGOTS FROM RESETERA DIDNT EVEN BUY THE GAME AFTER THE CANCELING OF JONTRON.
>>
>>723271019
Oh he got screenwave'd too? Yeah his videos are shittier now but I still think he's a cool dude, James too
>>
>>723266686
I can't believe I learned a new word from the devil today
>>
>>723271158
Ever since he started doing videos on a set instead of in his house/apartment, yeah. Once he stopped reviewing vidya and started exclusively reviewing bad movies and funny commercials, I checked out.

Well, he's gone through a few phases. I think first he was in his parent's house, then the Grump studio, then in his NYC apartment (these were his best videos imo), then he got a set that looked like an apartment and started doing prop and costume jokes, and finally his new set looks sort of like a basement. Since moving to his most-recent set his videos have toned down on the prop and costume jokes quite a bit and are better than they were in the apartment set, but now he puts out videos incredibly rarely.

I think Jon is fulfilled in his personal life now, but I don't know what he wants to do professionally or if he still likes making videos.

>>
>>723271374
Makes me wonder how much he's worth. Is he still living in New York? I imagine you have to be earning a lot to live comfortably there, and since he's not making new videos that means he's either raking in cash from ad revenue and/or sitting on a nest egg and building interest.
>>
>>723271852
I think he did something in Maine and ended up liking it there so much he moved there, which is where his most recent set is.
>>
Someone post the femboy yooka costume

When is he going to cameo on Smiling Friends? Do Oney and Zach hate him now too?

IIRC his parents are rich.
>>
>>723271554
Who cares that they couldn’t get absolutely everyone back? The fact that most of them did is still an accomplishment, plus Replaylee is better than Tooie so it balances out quite nicely.
>>
>>723271554
>they made a fucking QA tester the lead designer
lmao
>>
I want a tl;dr on the improvements.
The issues of the game are in its core design, I don't see how adding 25 more pagies in every level is going to help that.
>>
>>723266686
I mean it still sucks.
>>
>>723272959
imagine banjo tooie but they gave you 3 jiggies in open areas, it's the same
>>
>>723272959
you're not gonna get any posts in good faith so i'm just gonna go over what i've played so far
>all abilities unlocked from the start
>yooka controls extremely different, roll especially feels really good ontop of not using stamina anymore
>new areas in existing levels, most objectives have been redone or tampered with
>map and fast travel in levels alongside odyssey-like qol like paying for locations of pagies you haven't found yet
>new collectible, works like coins in odyssey, they're everywhere, you use them to pay for locations of pagies, cosmetics and tonics
>you use quills now to pay for more health, stamina and tonic slots
>they reward you out the ass, collectibles everywhere, map no longer feels empty
>camera is way better
>pacing is incredibly different, you can be done with the game in like 6 hours if you don't go for 100%
>new tutorial area
>bosses have been slightly redesigned, still not that good but no longer terrible
>rextro minigames have been removed and replaced with a different mode entirely where you control rextro in a captain toad like puzzle platformer
>minecart segments have been altered with simplified controls, you get 3 pagies out of each of them now but the third pagie is a pain to get
overall i'm happy with it since i didn't like the original, /v/ is kinda bitter still but i enjoyed it. it feels more like they're setting up a formula for a future sequel.

>>723270895
genuinely what has jontron done that has been relevant in the past 5 years? he's a has-been who makes infomercial reactions for people who grew up watching the 9 months he was on game grumps. keep seething about a literal vidya nobody.
>>
>>723273521
thank you for actually articulating this. the game actually rocks now & made me feel kazooie & tooie shit unlike the original
>>
the helicopter in the casino still sucks and is probably the most yooka-laylee part in replaylee
though with the ability to exit transformations at any time it does feel sligthly better, but 100%ing the casino still feels like ass
>>
>>723276358
so?
>>
>>723267164

> I'm glad they put some distance between Yooka-Laylee and Banjo-Kazooie in terms of presentation. Being so blatantly derivative did it no favors.

They traded being derivative of Banjo for being blatantly derivative of Mario.
>>
>>723271852

only the health bar, the presentation of everything else is its own thing. it's still banjo inspired like the dialogue but with its own flair instead of just banjo.

Just like the original Banjo then, as it should be.

i'll stick to my collectathonslop.
>>
>>723277610
You need to buy it through the console itself I think
>>
>>723277492

everything involving the coins was lifted from Odyssey
>>
>>723277857
I think it's done better than Odyssey even due to the tonics.
>>
>>723267164
Don't feel too bad about it. Instead of making more games by themselves they put their crowdfunding money towards creating a publishing arm to publish woke projects from their friends, which bombed
>>
>>723272592
>People don't learn new skills with experience

Gregg Mayles started in QA too at Rare before being put on bigger roles. This isn't uncommon in gamedev.

Why wouldn't you want Diddy Kong Racing 2
>>
>>723280995
because I want twooka-laylee and that seems to be the one that'd generate the most buzz
even impossible lair didn't do that well, though replaylee seems to do really well on switch 2.

In other news, it's Banjover.
>>
>>723266686
I picked it up because there's not many 3D platformers anymore. At least with decent smaller sized budget, but above the typical indie funding.
I didn't play the original because I heard it getting trashed so much. So if this somehow salvages that experience and at the price of sometimes taking the opposite direction of Banjo to achieve it then I'll probably take that. I haven't had the chance to play it yet because I've been busy.

Also what you often hear in these threads is that because they didn't get the original level designer of BK Greg Mayles that somehow would have made all the difference in making Yooka Laylee a better game. But my beliefs are that it wouldn't have mattered. It's a common occurrence in the industry for studios to become one hit wonders. And this factor alone makes having original key members on board absolutely worthless and irrelevant. There is the high possibility that Banjo Kazooie was always a fluke and Mayles involvement wouldn't have changed a thing. There's no guarantee key members change a thing. Industry veterans aren't always capable of striking gold twice, since we've had many let downs of these return stories over the years if you've paid any attention to other genres in gaming.

funny you should say that, because the new shit about their flying boat is 1000% setup for a sequel. twokah-laylee (if playtonic survives) is going to be about the flying boat going around to places.
