The problem with gatekeeping is that developers are overwhelmingly hostile to the idea. Developers who "gatekeep" are really just tossing people as a shield against criticism, not protecting their games. Developers who allow gatekeeping are intentionally limiting their ability to sell a game, and developers fucking hate that. It is always, 100% up to the community to gatekeep. The problem is, the part of a community that wants to gatekeep is often at odds with the part of the community that is actually qualified to gatekeep. Have you ever played a PvE game and soloed an asinine amount of the content while your team was struggling to stay alive in the corner, and then one of them declares that he's carrying you? What about the people here who have extensive, encyclopedic knowledge about a specific game who have to deal with people who skimmed a 2 minute youtube video and came to tell you that you're wrong about everything? If you're the first person in those scenarios, you're the kind of person who should be allowed to gatekeep. But the people who are going to do it are the latter. The people who fucking suck but desperately want to be the equivilent of a janny for a video game community for nothing more than lack of self-importance.Gatekeeping is challenging because the wrong people are doing it. There are few success stories because you wouldn't have heard of most of them. It works but it's not a high profile victory when it does. The ultimate goal is to turn away the bad eggs more rapidly than a developer can attract them but some developers are so insistent that they turn attracting shit to themselves into a personal hobby. All of your efforts can be wasted if a vtuber randomly streams the game.
