>>719299072The most fun I've had in RPGs is playing human male fighter and disrespecting the entire plot. Actually taking it seriously, listening to all the NPCs, solving all the problems and being a good guy is honestly nowhere near as entertaining as acting like a complete asshole. A good RPG will respect those choices and conform to your playstyle so I find it a good test to see how well built a game is. Baldur's Gate 1 handles it perfectly. Baldur's Gate 2 fails horribly, breaks the game and soft locks at many points if you don't play along.

>>719301569I was like you before, but now I feel like if a game lets you do all the content, save all the characters and get a perfect good fairy tale ending by simply going through the check list, that it's failed at being an RPG.Failing upwards is such a huge part of tabletop RPGs and a very entertaining element so I find it disappointing when games don't often account for failure. BG3 does a decent job, and Disco Elysium is fantastic about this but most games just have NPCs and quests be reward dispensers. Let me fuck shit up without breaking the game, and have my decisions actually have an effect that isn't "Do task for +1 Dagger, or don't and miss out on it".

This includes Larian for shaming people over it.>>719301490I love BG1 and 2 but they made some really boneheaded decisions about being evil, namely by tying it directly into the reputation system (which will naturally increase as you do quests). So doing evil shit that reduces your rep always shoots you in the foot because it makes NPCs dislike you, not giving out quests and charging more at shops. On top of that if you want to take along an evil party member they act like huge edgelords and get mad when your reputation gets too high, even leaving at a certain point. Even when I first played it as a kid I thought that was retarded.
