linux pros:
>no shader compile stutter
>better cpu scheduler
>better performance on amd
>better filesystems
>better network stack
>better compatibility with older games

>no spying

>no indexing of your private image and video files

It's always enabled. You'll just be able to disable the user facing part of it. That doesn't mean it isn't sending those screenshots to microsoft anyway. In fact, if I had to guess I'd say they've already been doing this for 5 years secretly. Where else would they get the data to train it?

This requires an AI chip in the CPU which is only available on new mobile intel and AMD cpus.

Currently they are trial testing this goy devices only for mobile users but desktop CPUs will eventually get this AI pozz in all of them.

This is your fault for not investing in new players in the CPU market, now you get jewed from everyone including Nvidia who is also entering the CPU market with their ARM based desktop CPU

Cool, when all the rajeesh bullshit windows try to force me to use, could not be disabled simply by editing the register, then I'll consider linux. It's a damn fortune they don't know what the fuck is a kernel and keep using the same Windows NT kernel, so EVERYTHING they try to push is entirely optional.

Yeah that is what they said about windows updates years ago. Then once normalfags get used to it they make it required.
Anybody with a brain can tell that the future they want is for PCs to basically just be dumb client terminals with little/no storage that require constant internet connection to MS servers to even run or access your shit. They'll record and constantly intrude on everything you do so every aspect of your identity and life can be monetized.
I don't even know why people pay for Windows now, they should be the ones paying you to put a glorified vending machine in your house.

I was talking more about the sending screenshots to ms servers part than the AI model part. That isn't what secure boot does you retard.
The same malware you are talking about specifically still works with secure boot, and the most recent malware targeting it was actually only a vulnerability because of motherboard manufacturers trying to add secure boot functionality afterwards via firmware and it exposing a larger attack vector for them due to them not being designed with it in mind.

Linux is great for a work computer
when you connect to your jobs servers, keep everything uploaded, don't need to worry about storing anything serious locally, and can just have an image you load if shit goes haywire.
don't need to worry about versions or shit changing, don't need to worry about comparability or regularly fucking with it.

for a personal computer though?
where you actually just want to use it to do shit and any issues are going to cost you hours of time to fix? when compatibility problems are a huge issue for the things you want to do?
nah its awful. Love it at work, would never use it for my own personal computer, especially not for gaming.

No , it doesn't. The NPU requirement is just MS running interference (heh!) for Intel/AMD, who use that stuff as a selling point for new hardware. Any CPU with big-ish matrix units can run the model. I'd guess AVX2 is a practical cutoff for performance reasons, but you could probably do that math on anything with AVX, which goes all the way back to [checks wiki] Sandy Bridge from 2011.

NPUs are definitionally a resource hog, because the silicon they require, which is a lot, could have been spent on something more useful for general instructions. They are also hilariously underpowered, even the beefiest NPU gets btfo by a 2060 from 6 years ago. If you have any sort of GPU available, it will be orders of magnitude fater than an NPU. If you have the need to run inference (note: Recall doesn 't do that) and for some reason can't find even a pleb tier GPU laying around, then you're best off just running it remotely.

The "something eventually break" (nice english rajesh) is blatantly false. With linux, once I had my shit running, it never broke. And while sure, it might take hours to get certain software to work on linux, its infinitely better to the windows alternative, where after every single fucking update, it decides to reset certain settings. Which ones? Who the fuck knows. Sometimes its going to be my internet settings, other times audio, occasionally its going to fuck with video drivers just because. And you can never know until you want to use some software and its suddenly bricked, and now you get to troubleshoot.
Fuck windows, and fuck their updates.

Btw, windows is so dogshit, it won't let you uninstall the language of the OS. If you want your windows to be in english, because all troubleshooting guides are made in that language, you will have hard locked yourself into always having the US or GB keyboard layouts. You can add the one you are actually using, but you can't remove the english one.
The only way to remove it is once again registry editing. And even then it gets tricky.
Its really fun if you are using a workflow that overlaps with the default windows keyboard swap hotkey.

Do not fear the man who keeps things to himself, fear the man who feigns being an open book; for every 'secret' they divulge, there are one or two more they keep buried, which would likley be a magnitude higher than what they already told you.

You would need to add newer repositories to sources list every time you want to go from version to another with "sudo apt update" and "sudo apt upgrade".
Just make sure to never mix the packages of versions and let it fully upgrade them and create the initramfs. All the older versions should be located in archive.debian.org so it should be possible.

Imagine getting a nice, affordable, very customizable car that you can tweak however you like, but you gotta open the hood whenever you wanna change the A/C settings. It's the one thing you can't change for whatever reason and it's bugging you.
You go to an auto forum and ask about this. You say that it feels clunky and inefficient. Why can't they just use a knob on the dashboard like other cars?
Some fans of this car respond with several paragraphs explaining why the under hood method is perfect.
Some will say you bought the wrong trim. There's a better one where the A/C control is in the trunk.
Some will condescendingly ask if it's too hard to open a hood.

The problem here is native software support. The software you use daily most likely does not have a native Linux build and to get it to work you need to use Wine, Proton or some sort of VM passtrough. You think that the average person, the cashcow of these companies, will bother with installing software to run software? They will expect everything to run out of the box, even proprietary stuff, and if not, good fucking luck making any kind of money.

Also to note, apt doesn't do anything to prevent that, but if you do it then it's like lodging a wrench by a flywheel and will make the installation shit itself. Just double check every time you move up and make sure it updated initramfs too.

It's mostly just reddit threads or stackexchange.
Judging by that 2002 CD, the version is Debian codename "Woody". As you can see here all the systems it supports, it doesn't have 64-bit.
https://www.debian.org/releases/woody/
You're going to have to "crossgrade" into 64-bit system later down the line if you want to use that cd. Look up how to do that as I've never done it, but it should be as simple as switching a couple of lines.

When updating you should be always switching to a newer version of kernel, at least that's what Grub does. If it doesn't happen then there will be some troubleshooting or booting into another kernel from Grub's menu. Maybe just forgetting about some old kernel not booting with the system and trying to move up with a one that boots.

GNOME is fine and offers a more unique way of working with a desktop, while KDE is functions just like any desktop from yesteryear.
My actual issues with GNOME are three:
1 - Absolute brain dead developers that think a 60Hz monitor with forced vsync is normal and what everyone should use.
2 - The constant removal of settings to "simplify" the desktop. Often these settings simply end up hidden, causing confusion.
3 - The desktop functions almost like a web browser, including its extensions.

Brainlet. You don't hate AI, you hate mega corporations taking advantage of you using anything. You don't complain getting carded at the store to buy alcohol but when Youtube wants to take your ID for no reason just to pretend it gives a shit about protecting kids when in reality they were praying for a reason to collect free PIIs, it's a problem. I don't at all mind patents for intelelctual properties or concepts but when major companies start using "uh actually we were the first ones to use minigames in loading screens, you can't do that!", then it's a problem because they use it in way that impedes progress from good fundimental concepts from being added onto, stifling art.
I love using AI as fast references in research, making a shitpost image I have no desire to spend the time to draw, or see a robot process things I'd never see otherwise. I use AI how I want to and that's a tool every average man should have access to.

Just to show how fucking stupid this argument is, here are some RECENT events involving microsoft getting in legal trouble or trouble in general for privacy concerns:
2016 — France’s CNIL formal notice on Windows 10. CNIL publicly warned Microsoft over Windows 10 telemetry/cookie practices (ad ID on by default, excessive data collection) and ordered compliance—again, a formal notice rather than a fine at that time.
2017 2019 — Netherlands DPA on Windows 10. Dutch regulator found Windows 10 telemetry broke local privacy law (2017). After changes in 2018, a 2019 follow-up said things improved but flagged new potentially unlawful processing and referred issues to Ireland (Microsoft’s EU lead authority).
2019/2022 — German school bans of Microsoft 365 (GDPR concerns). German data protection authorities said M365 use in schools wasn’t GDPR-compliant (transparency/transfer issues); several states advised or imposed bans. Not a fine on Microsoft, but significant regulatory pressure.
2021 — Power Apps data exposure (misconfiguration). Default settings in Microsoft Power Apps portals left 38M records publicly accessible across many orgs; Microsoft hardened defaults after disclosure. No enforcement against Microsoft, but widely cited as a privacy incident.
2022 — “BlueBleed” Azure storage exposure. A misconfigured Microsoft endpoint exposed business data (Microsoft acknowledged and tightened controls; debate remains about scope). Again, incident rather than a fine
Dec 2022 — France’s CNIL €60M fine (Bing cookies). CNIL fined Microsoft Ireland €60M for placing advertising cookies on Bing without valid consent and for lack of an easy refuse button.
2023 — U.S. FTC/COPPA (Xbox) $20M settlement. Microsoft paid $20M over allegations it collected/retained kids’ data via Xbox without parental consent and failed to meet COPPA requirements.
1/2
>>
>>719337345
2/2
Oct 2024 — Irish DPC €310M fine (LinkedIn). The DPC fined LinkedIn Ireland (Microsoft-owned) for GDPR breaches—no valid legal basis for behavioral analysis/targeted ads; LinkedIn was ordered to reform its ad data practices.
Mar 2024 — EDPS ruling on EU institutions using Microsoft 365. Europe’s data-protection supervisor found the European Commission infringed EU-institution data-protection law when using M365 (transfer safeguards too weak; purposes insufficiently specified) and ordered data-flow suspensions unless brought into compliance—pressure that also forced contractual/technical changes. (This targeted the Commission as controller, but it’s a major privacy action tied to the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.)
Other LinkedIn privacy cases (U.S.).

2015–2016 “Add Connections” class action—LinkedIn paid $13M over emails sent to users’ contacts; policy changes followed
Biometrics lawsuits (BIPA, U.S.). Microsoft was sued in 2020 (Vance v. Microsoft) for alleged use of photos in facial-recognition training; in 2022 the court granted Microsoft summary judgment (i.e., Microsoft prevailed). Still “legal trouble,” but not liability.

>Every time someone regurgitates this bullshit about linux never breaking,
because "linux" is a variety of very different distros. If you install Linux Mint or Fedora it will have less problems that windows because they are stable distros with a tested update every 6 months. You even have Fedora distros made for gaming that have everything you need preinstalled and they are immutable (that means you can't break anything even if you wanted).

Lot of people shill Arch nowadays because it's a great distro, but it's bleeding age and sometimes updates fuck things up, you should avoid these type of distros if you don't want to spend a few hours reading a wiki to fix shit.

I fell for the "use a stable distro" meme and half the shit I wanted to use was un-usably out of date and it forced me to hunt down and find drivers that weren't part of the stable packages just to get shit to work, which then made the whole system inherently unstable because they weren't testing updates vs anything but out of date shit.

There is no good solution to having a reliable stable linux system. If you use linux you *have* to come to terms with your computer breaking on you for no good fucking reason the very moment you actually need it for something critical.

As a quick recommendation for anyone here who uses linux and finds themselves in such a predicament - save yourself the headache, keep a backup of your user files, and just uninstall and reinstall the operating system every time it breaks. It will save you hours of time and headaches.

Everyone knew that BF6 wasn't gonna work on linux because of kernel level anti cheat. This isn't some gotcha, it's literally the devs actively sabotaging linux users. They could enable anti cheat for linux (granted, it won't be kernel level) but they choose not to.

Its stupid right out the gate. Its solving a problem that doesn't actually exist. The few things that it might be useful for it to recall are things it absolutely should not be saving, like passwords. Even if implemented completely offline, so it only saves these to the machine, its a secondary point of failure if someone is snooping and trying to compromise you.

The most hilarious part of this whole debate that just occured to me is the idea that windows gaming is just "fine" if you "disable all the telemetry and spying stuff". I want you to imagine something for me ok? Bear with me anons, this is an analogy. Imagine a mother is trying to find someone to babysit her kids, and the only person available is a convincted child predator who has been caught multiple times. You tell her "its ok, as long as you lock him up in chastity he cant rape your kids". That is how absurd the idea that we should use windows if we just "disable the telemetry and spying that we know about im sure theres nothing else bad to worry about" really is. Im sure you know how ridiculous it would be to trust a child with a child predator, well unfortunately Microsoft IS a predator. They have been caught, multiple times as previously covered in this very thread red handed. They prey on their customers and windows/all the other services they sell only exist in order to gather and siphon data. That is their real business. To prey on people. To exploit them. They get away with it because they are overwhelmingly rich, powerful, and prevalent in the computer industry. You should not trust Microsoft ever with any of your data. Even if you think you have all of the spying turned off, there is probably more we dont know about yet, and why are you even putting yourself in a situation where you have to constantly be on edge that your fucking OS might be spying on you and selling your data. It is so inherently fucked up that I cannot believe that I have to post this.

Biggest benefit is that you get extremely fine control over what is installed on your pc.
There are definitely distros that offer even more control but arch is very popular + the wiki is great. Also, arch is literally being funded by valve these days.
Are you switching from windows or another linux distro?
Depending on your linux experience there will be a learning curve for you.
Read the arch wiki (especially the installation guide) carefully, and I promise you that you will be very happy with arch.
You're probably going to being using a PC for the rest of your life, whether that is for gaming or just anything that requires a PC. Invest he time to learn how to use (Arch) linux properly and will be able to 100% control what is on your PC and while being free from Microsoft's spy network.

I can disable/enable any background service I want. Microsoft/Apple doesn't allow this.
I like to have a minimal amount of programs running/installed + I use a standalone window manager that uses minimal resources. Microsoft/Apple doesn't allow this.
I am never forced to update, ever. Every update I do is manually initiated by me. Microsoft/Apple doesn't allow this.
I don't constantly have to fight against my system to retake my privacy and ownership. My (arch) linux install is mine and nobody else's.

I'm not dishonest.
The only time I legitimately have forgotten something I want to see again I can use a basic fucking search engine and find it again. If you have enough information to remember it at all, you have enough information to track it down again. If thats too much effort, it didn't matter enough in the first place. And if I've forgotten it, usually its been several years, in which case recall is useless anyway.

I don't understand why you would shill for a product whose sole purpose is making you worse at remembering the things you yourself did and then making you worse at practicing the skills to rectify that.

>I can disable/enable any background service I want
not any service though, there are a ton of essential services that still need to run otherwise they break usability, so no this isn't valid sorry. Windwows also have LTSC versions where you can also fine tune.

>I like to have a minimal amount of programs running/installed
same as above

>I am never forced to update, ever.
again, ltsc

>I don't constantly have to fight against my system to retake my privacy and ownership
LTSC also helps with this, but also if you use 4chan or youtube, then you don't care about privacy.

You lost

Normal text search is inherently human unfriendly. Humans are prone to remembering vague ideas not word for word text strings

Furthermore, my browser cannot search page content from the history. I don't know what browser can. Certainly none that I have encountered.

I think your hatred for microsoft is blinding you. I would also love this feature on Linux. It's just a good feature.
