As you do this your pawn says funny things, you find outfits or weapons that seem interesting, you try out how other vocations feel and ruminate on who your waifu will be.The caveat is that for the Escort quests what you're 'supposed to' do is retarded, so instead get portcrystals and place them in the relevant locations ahead of time and only then accept the escort mission, ferrystone to location, get emone.Going to BBI isn't going to make as much sense or have the impact if you haven't done the main quest.
