I love JK Rowling's transphobia but I can't condone writing the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.>a-at least the books were good though"No!" "DEH!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

>"Harry, did I ever tell you about the Bean Bonus Room? The Bean Bonus Room is a special room here - in this very castle! - where a student representing the week's current leading house can enjoy an entire room's worth of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans as a reward for their hard work and diligence. I invented this room, of course, for the purpose of spreading joy and merriment among the student body, so you need not worry about your fun being ruined by a stray grass flavored bean or a string of earwax and concrete beans: the beans delivered to the castle are purely delicious ones... most of the time.">"Sometimes Harry, I like to enjoy a bit of mischief when Slytherin is in the lead. Just a funny little schoolboy prank. In order to deflate the egos of those inbred web-toed little brats, I slip in a few centipede-flavored beans here, a few used band-aid beans there, the occassional vomit and semen beans... and I sit back and enjoy the show when the rug is pulled out from under their feet, and their five minutes of childhood bliss are derailed by a surprise gastronomic trip into hell. One time I slipped in a bean that was the flavor of feces at the end of a trail of chocolate ones, so when young Draco sprung into the air by way of the Spongify charm, he spewed out a torrent of vomit as he sailed through the heavens. Oh it was lovely, Harry. For a brief moment it was comparable to viewing an aurora borealis made of the little hellion's stomach contents.">"Anyway, thank you for listening to my story. 50 points to Gryffindor."

Malfoy stumbled down the street and the darkness followed. All he had left was the wand clutched in his cold, sweaty hand. *clack* the street lamp ahead of him was swallowed by the night. The light was captured by a strange apparatus while reflecting against a pair of crescent-shaped spectacles. He was coming. "Draco, Draco, Draco", a calm voice reverberated from the void. "I assure you this is quite futile." *clack* The darkness descended upon Malfoy. "L-lumos.", he stammered. "Expelliarmus.", Dumbledore stated drily as he stepped next to him, his wand pointing in no particular direction. Malfoy's magic wand dropped to the ground impotently. "My father will-" he started, cowering on the cold brick road, but the sound of his own voice startled him to silence. "But my dear Draco, the Aurors are wanderboarding him as we speak. Soon we'll have the location of every Slytherin alumni. Once we do, the Order shall pay them a little visit. Have their spawns try this on for size." Dumbledore pulled a brown piece of leather from his enormous, purple coat. It was the sorting hat. "You see Draco, it took me some years to calibrate this ugly rag, but finally it can sort children of all ages. Infants even." There was a cold expression in the wizard's old, watery eyes. "To get rid of a poisonous tree, it must be plugged out by the roots. You understand, don't you Draco? The Slytherin menace must be eradicated once and for all. It gives me no pleasure." But even as he said it, Dumbledore's other wand stood to attention. "Sir, please..." Tears were obscuring his vision. "Imperius." the Headmaster said and Malfoy diligently executed his order to kneel and bite down on the curb of the sidewalk. "Farewell, Draco. No death curse for you. Disposed of like a Muggle thug... if only Salazar could see you now." There was a pause - then his mind was taken by agony as the Headmaster of Hogwarts calmly stretched his leg against the back of Malfoy's head with tremendous force.

>>719320869>>719320879Abra Kadabra as a faux-magic word stems from the War of Primordial Houses that took place in Europe following the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire. The various disparate Wizarding factions each sought dominion over each other, leading to an arms race of research into spells, alchemy, and magical creatures. This led to the creation of the 'Seven Unholy Curses', which became widespread across the wizarding world as the war escalated. Avada Kedavra was among the most used of these curses, with the Cruciatus Curse and Imperius Curse following it. Due to their heightened usage, these three became the most infamous and well remembered of the Seven, eventually becoming labelled as the Unforgiveable Curses whole the other four were lost to time.Avada Kedavra became especially prevalent later in the war as the wizarding factions in modern Spain and Portugal began to lose ground against invading French wizards, eventually descending into all out killings in full view of non-magical humans. This in part led to the de-escalation of hostilities between other houses, as the Spanish wizards' increasingly violent nature would eventually lead to the Spanish Inquisition forming. With Avada Kedavra having leaked to the broader populace, a spin campaign was formed, with 'Abra Kadabra' being formulated as a fake replacement to steer the non-magicals away with silly parlor tricks.

Professors being involved elavates it to an activity officially sanctioned by the school. Just having Dumbledore's name on it, even if he wasn't involved, had the Ministry come in and oust him immediately.OOTP is pretty much the sole movie where Harry and Co. staying quiet makes sense.

The problem is that writing passable sci fi is much more demanding from an author in terms of intellect and education.

Usually the ones who use do it as some sort of “final” move. Theres also more practical ways to kill like exploding, fire spells, paralyzing someone, laceration ones that cover a wider area of effect.
>>719333067>Only the most sadistic far gone wizards can use the three Unforgiveable CursesEvery single deatheater spams AK like its nothing
>>719326838He is easily chased off by any of the teachers. Presumably they have spells they can use on him. There is mention in the books about having him permanently removed from the castle, suggesting that's a thing they can do.Dumbledore probably keeps him around because he's a chaotic force that can throw a wrench in the plans of anyone fucking with Hogwarts. You can't plan around him. If he catches you sneaking around he's gonna fuck with you and ruin your plan.
>>719329115You need to roll or attack to reveal hidden walls

>>719324764>>719327390In the series Fred and George make shield hats which automatically block low level spells cast at a person. This probably works against projectile attacks as well. So a sniper rifle wouldn't work. You'd have to overwhelm the shield with force and sustained attacks.
>>719332930Jojo has to be the most inconsistent series ever created, the author loves to make up rules just to immediately break them. Last season I watched was 4 so I remember that one best, every time Kira has his back against the wall, he pulls a new power out of his ass that does exactly what he needs in that moment. There's literally no explanation for some things like how he controls the bubbles and the part only lasts as long as it does because the characters are stupid and choose to let him escape. You want to talk about bad writing, holy shit this fucking manga.
>>719333820Bad writing aside, my point on the magic system stands.
>>719333938Extreme convenience is not a magic system. It's just making it up as they go along.
>>719334017To be fair, that's pretty much what magic was always supposed to be. If it follows strict rules and never does anything unexpected or unexplainable, then it's literally science.
>>719327520Why is there money or currency at all when we have counterfeiters that can infinitely copy an object like a dollar, the muggle world should be a post-scarcity society
>>719332120the problems is that filch and other squibs aren't COMPLETELY incapable of magic, they're just really really really REALLY shit at it by default, and you cant tell them apart from full wizards just by visual inspection. in the books everyone assumes filch is a wizard until one of the kids runs across some books the guy has which are supposed to teach extremely easy cantrips put pass them off as real 'adult' magic so squibs are obviously capable of *some* kind of magic, just incredibly basic shit that doe snot a wizard make. on top of that squibs are clearly counted as 'wizards' for most magic and thus are not just clued in to the existence of wizards but anti-muggle shit doesnt affect them. its stated multiple times that hogwarts and the countryside surrounding it is layered in so many anti-muggle spells to prevent some hiker stumbling upon it that anyone who does is practically turned into an unthinking zombie for a while and automatically walks away from the area. this doesnt happen to filch, so clearly squibs arent counted as muggles any way you slice it, filch is fucked since he cant just live like a muggle. if they mind wiped his ass he'd just see through all the anti-muggle illusions and probably cause enormous problems by freaking out and drawing attention to it, like a muggle would. so he HAS to live as a cripple in wizard society. pretty tragic
>>719334190>when we have counterfeiters that can infinitely copy an object like a dollarExcept those money printers are only in the hands of a select few and cannot be built by anyone but them. Magic spells can be learned by any wizard, I have seen nothing that prevents anyone from casting any spell aside from the curses which are only rules. There are no material restrictions, no labor necessities, no manufacturing thresholds or infrastructure requirements to prevent a wizard from learning any spell, unlike the real world where money printers, even if you knew the secret ingredients AND had the blueprints, still require machinery, labor and materials that nearly nobody could hope to attain.Unless you're a dope and think that using your Epson printer to zip out a photo of a dollar is the same thing as literal magic that makes a literal 1:1 copy of an object on the molecular level.
>>719320947Many people are saying this
>>719334469Nigga it's magic, any logic you can apply to it can be countered just as easily with a "they'll use magic to see through it" or "the gold has innate magic that prevents true duplication".Regarding why Harry doesn't use his wizard gold in the real world, why would he bother using money to get muggle shit when he could just magic it into reality?
>>719334190Being able to copy usable objects like houses, food and clothing with zero material or labor cost is a little different than counterfeiting money, anon. The only purpose of money is to get those material objects and necessities. If you could just pop one out of thin air then money as a concept would be obsolete.
>>719320646I don't really understand the unforgivable curses. Are you telling me wizard kind only created:> A single spell expressly designed to torture?> A single spell expressly designed to control?> A single spell expressly designed to kill?I call bullshit. What about a spell that transmutes the target's internal organs into ravenous meat ants? What about a spell that turns someone into a living marionette by externalizing their circulatory system and invisibly manipulating the veins and arteries? That shit is way more vile and evil than 'lmao funny green euthanasia bolt'.
>>719332120>>719334375the weasleys have a squib relative who just works as an accountant that they "don't talk about", so it's not like they CAN'T go do muggle work without engaging with magical societycompared to that, keeping around filch for a good 40 years as the caretaker of hogwarts who constantly has to contend with little shits antagonising him and an immortal poltergeist fucking with him constantly almost feels like some form of torture

>>719334190>>719327520There's a huge problem in the series with exchange rates. In the real world a gold coin is worth around $3500.But wizards are spending galleons like they're worth $50.So there's no point counterfeiting muggle currency or anything. Just sell a few galleons to muggles and buy anything mundane from them.
>>719334890To be fair anyone on the bottom rung of a ladder are going to be shit on by a bunch of kids who see themselves as above them. You could have a wizard as powerful as Snape as the dedicated castle janny and the kids would still shittalk him to his face.
>>719335067Why would a wizard need to buy anything from a muggle? Anything a wizard could want that's mundane or muggle-made, they could just make by magic. It'd be like buying imaginary or play food from a child using actual currency.
I don't know why Rowling wrote that wizards can just teleport everywhere and then had to come up with all sorts of reasons why everything couldn't be solved by just teleporting to the immediate object to solve everything.
With the new series coming out, do you think there will be new games based on the books?
>>719320947came here to post this

>>719335372Anywhere important has anti-teleporting defenses because society wouldn't be able to function if people could teleport into your vault at Gringotts. The real problem here is that House Elves can bypass these defenses. "Hey Dobby, go steal all the gold out of the Malfoy's vault for me."

>>719336823Snape was a genius of the dark arts and a terrible person. He was fully on board with Voldemort until he killed Lily.He was never a good guy. He was a useful asset.
Everyone seems to forget that you can't just magic up gold (and probably other precious metals) because that's half of what makes the Philosopher's Stone so special. You also can't use magic to make food, that's canon. Given that, it stands to reason that there are other unstated restrictions for making objects with magic, which is why the Wizards are able to have an economy without magically spawning in whatever they need.
>>719333067>Only the most sadistic far gone wizards can use the three Unforgiveable Cursesthe worst part of HP's worldbuilding is that this line extends to even the random mooks that make up the bottom line of the death eaters and even fucking harry himself, so suddenly it feels like casting the fun entrails-expelling curse is a wasted effort when you could just guaranteed OHKO themkeep that shit as voldemort's specialty that only he and his wackiest death eaters like bellatrix and barty can cast and the whole thing works much better - suddenly harry actually being able to cast it is a much better foreshadowing of what's going on with his scar than shit like saying years later "oh yeah harry has 0 slytherin qualities that was just because of the horcrux lol"

>>719345645>he could have easily ran for Minister of Magic and win. There's a particular fanfiction I liked that sort of covers that. Can't recall the name, but it had an extremely odd setup with a female Harry Potter and Neville as the boy who lived, but essentially, after Voldemort died, his horcruxes took on sentience somehow, with the diary and ring becoming fully separate people. The diary becomes 'Professor Slytherin' and steals the DADA position by force since he is the true heir to Slytherin.Meanwhile, the ring becomes 'Lord Gaunt' and works his way up through the ministry into becoming Minister by the time the story starts in Harry's first year. This all blows up into a three way cold war between the real Voldemort and his two horcruxes, it was pretty fun but really bogged itself down with women moments (the three leads are female-Harry, Hermione, and Sirius' daughter (OC)).
>>719343537>>719343332Your average movie depicts villains as being cool and imposing, but in real life dictators tend to come across as goofy and a little retarded. Partly because you have to be retarded to keep slamming your head against the "easy way" of doing everything, even when all the logistics and common sense say it isn't working.Voldermort's whole angle was "I'll kill the Muggles", and he didn't know what the fuck he was doing with, like, tax policy or whatever. He just left that to Lucius or whoever.

The killing didn't benefit anyone, but he people didn't like them and they did want a group to blame, and they were happy to have an insane dumbass willing to stand up and do all the damage. Everyone just run things around Voldermort, which is why as soon as he came back wizard society instantly fell in line. They didn't need him as a leader, they just needed a guy who'd order murders and own it in a way the aristocrats and government employees couldn't openly do.
>>719346150Come to think of it Harry doesn't have that much experience with adutls or any positive role models. So no wonder he sees Dumbledore and Mcgonagall positively compared to his aunt and her husband. 4d chess from Dumbledore - handing Harry into shitty family so that he would be easy to maipualte and will treat Hogwarts as his home despite it being completely stupid safety wise.
>Tom Marvolo Riddle = I Am Lord VoldemortThis shit always irritated me. If he wanted to count "Lord" as part of his cool new name, that's stupid but whatever. >>719345858Obligatory "I think we weren't supposed to think hard about the worldbuilding and it kinda sucks"The half-blood prince stuff makes it clear that people can "invent" spells and that people can, despite evidence to the contrary, cast spells successfully without fully understanding what they mean. If I had to headcanon something I'd say that people with sufficient know-how can use words as a focus for what they want to do, and this process makes it easier for the schoolchildren with wands and lousy pronunciation to recall the same basic magical task executions, but I really don't think there's a good explanation.

>>719348723There was a shift in genre as much as mood. The first four books are structured like classic British whodunnits. There’s a:>central mystery>an obvious but false culprit >main trio are a buddy detective team>plot is driven by detective work>an ending twist which casts everything in a new lightMeanwhile, the last three books are more meandering and psychological. They lack a clear structure and tend to wander. The focus is very psychological, with the psyches of Harry, Dumbledore, Voldemort, and Snape getting the most exploration.
>>719345858Well you can cast spells without incantations. Also without wands or even conscious intent. Those things just help focus it and give predictable outcomes. It's all really about imagination, and those things make you believe that you'll get a certain defined effect from a certain incantation.
>>7193504816 was all about mystery. Who is the half blood prince, what's Malfoy up to, who's attacking people at the school and why?
>>719348723The books growing up with the audience is one of the masterstrokes of the series. It also provides a very funny and ironic backdrop to the criticism it gets in the future when adults start nitpicking everything they didn't notice and care about as children.>this setting about a secret magical wizard society isn't LOGICALLY CONSISTENT>SCIENCE WOULD TOTALLY BEAT MAGIC AND SOLVE EVERYTHING>WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST DO THE THING I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE>THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SECRET LOREAfter it was revealed Rowling had the bad no-no opinions, it intensified even more. People keep forgetting about suspension of disbelief. I wonder if society getting more autistic is true or if people just naturally become this pedantic and nitpicky. I wonder how much longer until the hard critique essays on the plot holes and setting realism problems in FNAF.
>McGonagall announces the Final Solution to the Slytherin question>everyone clapsOnly took 8 movies
>>719351467Her lore started to really fall apart during Fantastic Beasts, and people hated the Broadway show she put on about time turners. It's not autism or "no-no opinions", it's that the whole setting was made for Harry alone to live in. Without Harry to catch the Snitch and win the game, why even play quidditch? Why is it a rule that the house who wins quidditch wins the house cup? It's all so Harry can personally do it. The more Rowling did with the setting without Harry, the more it falls apart.
>>719351712Yeah, the Harry Potter universe is in the "lacking the original plot and main characters" part of franchising similar to what Star Wars and many other franchises have been going through for far far longer.Expanding any fictional universe causes the cracks to show. At some point you have to accept the fact it won't be perfect and that there's no such perfect ideal form of the setting in the first place.Eventually, we're going to get a series that focuses on adult Harry Potter or his and the rest's children that will super suck.

>>719354084>i don't recall that the spell had any drawbavks or limitationsIf you can cast it reliably and quickly then it's pretty OP, which is kinda why Voldemort is so powerful. He's a fucking psychopath so he has no problem mustering the killing intent that powers the spell. That's the drawback for most people. You can't take the time and use a spell that might fail in the middle of a fight. You'd need a big opening.>but if they can defend/repel it the spell reflects back on youThis literally happens twice to Voldemort. It's just not easy to repel. The first time was because of love magic. The second time because Voldemort tried to use the elder wand against it's true owner.
