New Vegas really was lightning in a bottle. Bethesda's engine is amazing for quasi-immersive sim settings where object permanence is a thing and you have utmost freedom to go where and do what you want, limited by their mediocre writing post-Morrowind. Then you've got Obsidian who's been a mediocre developer for the past 15-ish years yet managed to have the perfect mix of devs (Avellone, Sawyer, Gonzalez) in 2010. You have the 18 months time limit, which who knows whether it would've helped or not had the game had more time or whether it forced Obsidian to release the game with more 'raw' ideas put to paper.The end result is the best of Bethesda mechanically with the best of the best of Fallout narratively, an honest to god masterpiece RPG that people shoot down due to normie appeal yet freeze when told to list better first person RPGs that give the player an immersive world with total freedom to do what they want, however they want.
