So the thing is I've noticed a lot of MGS fans even who are deeper into it seem to skip Metal Gear 1 and 2. While I won't sing a lot of praise for 1 (I like it regardless) Metal Gear 2 is really a masterpiece that has to be experienced.

I've played both the original via MSX emulation and also the re-release on the PS2 with updated sprites to match the characters in later depictions and I generally prefer the one on the PS2 for that consistency.
The game to this day has a beautiful puzzle like design of the earlier games, decent stealth and one of the best soundtracks of all time and I am shocked how little it is brought up on the list of best 8 bit OSTs. The game is a must for Gray Fox fans to see what his actual backstory is (imo some of it was butchered later on) and not to mention the showdown with Big Boss that is literally talked about in MGS1. If you enjoy the gameplay loop of it DON'T sleep on Ghost Babel, also amazing with some more QoL.

(also don't butcher me for this but I put Metal Gear 2 higher than MGS3, it is lowest on my list of the Solid entries)

so for a first timer MSX or PS2?

I have grown to prefer the PS2 one personally, but MSX has a lot of soul. I just like the sprites since they match the rest of the appearances later on.

If you liked the MSX games you should try UnMetal. It's great.

"How the fuck was I supposed to know you could do THAT?": the Game
>>
will they remake the first 2 games? will there be a mgs4 remake?
>>
>>719347060
i've played it, its good for its time and i enjoy the characterization of big boss as an actual villain that kojima couldn't seem to bring himself back to, but mgs1 basically does everything it does and more
>>
>>719347060
I like them and it would be fun to see these 2 games redone more than the MGS games, though MGS1 is basically a rehash/reboot of MG2.
>>
>>719347060
It's legit great. Basically a 2D MGS1.
>>719348574
I beat it without guides. Git gud.
>>
>>719348574
Lol honestly I kind of like these elements myself.

>>719348505
Oh damn, never heard of this. I'll make sure to check it out soon. To get my fill I recently played Ghost Babel finally that I mentioned and was shocked by how good it was. I had a ROM of it for a while but the shitty cover art misled me into thinking it was an attempt of a port of Metal Gear Solid for GameBoy Color and not an actual new game.

>>719348595
If Kojima was still with Konami, I think he actually expressed an interest in this. I seem to remember him outright saying he would be interested in remaking MG1 and 2 in one interview.
However, current Fuckonami I am so god-damn doubtful that they will even begin to attempt a remake of it. I'm pretty sure they're already scared shitless with remaking Metal Gear Solid lmao let alone these entries. However I do think remakes of these games are important in the sense that they tell so many important moments of the lore.

>>719348804
I hear this a lot and I get it, I think MGS1 was even originally a straight up remake of MG2 if I'm not mistaken but for the PS1?

However to me MG2 still ends up having this really unique identity of its own and in a way I see MGS1 narrative wise as something that succeeds it properly rather than just being MG2 but better. Basically I just feel like the setting and events that happen in it, while having a very similar formula are still able to stand on their own.
>>
it would be such kino to have metal gear 1 and 2 merged into one storyline with kiefer for venom snake and david for big boss.

for new players they'd be like "damn, i'm already nearing the end, 2029 and i am already forgo--- ack!" and boom there is another true big boss. they have so much stuff that could be fucking awesome if done right

>>719347060
I've only played the NES version of Metal Gear. Is the MSX version that much different?
>>
>>719350159
Extremely different, you basically can't even say you've played Metal Gear 1 if you've played the NES one that's the degree of different
>>
>>719349141
Yeah wasn't implying anyone should just skip it in favor of MGS1 for the same experience, but there is no denying it reuses quite a few aspects. I believe both MG1 and MG2 could be really cool games given a decent budget and some new presentation. Though I suspect Konami will play it mostly safe and stick to MGS remakes for the coming years unfortunately.
>>
>>719350715
Yeah I am extremely doubtful they will touch MG1 and 2. I honestly have no clue how they will even proceed now after Delta because 3 is so god damn easy to remake and even that they did a pretty shit job at.
>>
>>719347060
This game has a pretty much obsolete thanks to MGS. MGS is more or less a remake of MG2
>>
>>719351353
No it isn't we were just discussing this before.
How can it be obsolete if so many key events take place? Just because MGS1 has similarities in structure doesn't mean its obsolete.
>>
>>719347060
It's my fave game in the series.
I was surprised to see so much of it re-used in Metal Gear Solid on the ps1.
>>
>>719348574
Have you never played an 8bit game before? Konami were kings of that stuff.
Check out Goonies 2 or The Maze of Galious for example.

And it's not just Konami - even the first Zelda had some absolutely ridiculous nonsense in it.
Falcom too, with games like Legacy of the Wizard and Compile's Romancia.
>>
>>719350159
The MSX games are ten times better.
>>
>>719347060
MG1 is pretty good outside of the esoteric stuff. Core sneaking is fun; there's a lot of good level design in it. MG2 is one of my favorites in the entire series though, stupid egg shit and all.
>>
>that part where you have to hang glide to another building but you need to equip the cigarettes to let snake smoke for a few seconds to calm his nerves
>>
>>719347060
I had never played Metal Gear before, so when I bought the Master CollectionI played MG1 and 2 first before moving to Solid. 1 was definitely an interesting game, there were a lot of details you needed to pay attention to to progress, but 2 was downright an amazing game with a very bittersweet story. Moving into Solid after that made it even more special since I now knew all of the references made in the game, like Master Miller, the final fight between Snake and Gray Fox, how important Big Boss actually was for Snake and of course, who kickstarted Metal Gear.
>>
>>719351353
MGS1 reuses some central beats but no. MG2 is a lot more stealth and exploration heavy, among other things. I doubt Kojima would use Schneider the same way if he could do it over again, but in general they're very different games.
>>
This game pissed me off so much lol. But I love it anyway, I just think it's so hard.
