the style is possible to replicate if you do a hybrid system of using 3d models up close and sprite LODs in your peripheral and very close by BUT it doesnt look good unless youre walking down a hill and looking up at another hill.

This kind of style is definitely possible, I think it could be done with a dungeon crawler's style of movement and interpolation between key frames, the gameplay wouldn't feel smooth however.

Trying to do this with 3D you'll instead end up with a game that looks like Doom, Wolfenstein, Daggerfall etc so it wouldn't be worth it.
