I do agree that more unique mechanics for the part that matters, the climb in the mesa, would have been nice. But I feel like the difficulty of the biome is meant to be the scarcity of food and the layout of the mountain that is pretty different from the other climbs. I see it as a part of the game where you have to move and think quick so you don't starve. That's why I enjoy it but pretty much every run with a full party on ascent 5+ does usually end with failure or multiple deaths. I think making the cactus fruit more common or actually fucking possible to get every time you see it (how am I supposed to get the fruit off the top of a 20 foot tall cactus?) or just making the climbing portion a little shorter would probably put it a little closer in difficulty to the other climbs. I do like cooking scorpions and luggage items with dynamite though, that's fun.
