>lets make a Metroidvania that controls like a Classicvania
What the fuck where they thinking?
>>
>>719366235
They weren't, this is the worst entry in the entire franchise and youre a cock sucking nigger if you disagree
>>
Best metroidvania of all time. Tarot cards were awesome fight me.

Yeah but I really like the way it sucks

>0.4% chance on an enemy only found in one room

Beautiful game design Iga!
>>
>>719366235
One of the best Castlevania games. The core team is stagnant. More alt teams should make entries.

>CotM
>You can only have one card combo equipped at a time.

i'm loathe to speak ill of any Castlemania... but it really is the worst one
>>
>>719366235
They tried to make a fun game. And they succeeded... to some degree. I won't deny it's jank, but by god, it so much better than HoD.

I'm stuck at the Dragon Zombie Boss. Fuck them both

I enjoy CotM and HoD more than AoS.

Call me once your game has something similar to difficulty and good level design.
>>
>>719367939
The game was stupidly basic and easy.
>>
>>719366235
That they had a good fucking idea because it's a good game.

>but drop rates and tap to dash
Don't care, still fun. It has the difficulty SotN sorely needed.

CotM has neither of those things.
>>
>>719366349
Circle of the Moon is amazing if you play it with an auto-run patch and you DSS glitch to have Pluto + Salamander for item crashes at the very start. Worthy successor to SOTN's Richter Mode, unlike Aria's Julius Mode
>>
Battle Arena was a cool concept, wish they wouldn't have wasted it on such a bad game.
>>
>>719366235
Literally the only flaws with it are card drops being too rare, manual dash, and the shittiest final boss in a Metroidvania. It's otherwise the best post-Rondo CV.

>>719366235
The only metroidvanias that were out at the time were Castlevania II, which controlled like a classicvania and SotN. where you played as an extra mobile dhampire. The assumption that humans in Castlevania control a certain way and Alucard was different because he wasn't a human. but in Castlevania III, Alucard controlled like everyone else so that might not have been the intention, but either way CotM was made by the Kobe studio so they wouldn't have known all of IGA's intentions from SotN.
>>
>>719366235
This is one of two games that has Thief/Luck Mode, therefore it's one of the two best games in that side of the series.
Simple as.

Now hold on there. Dracula Wraith, Chaos, and Menace all exist.

CotM Dracula is so much worse.

CotM is jank kino. One of the biggest pleb filters in the series.

>What the fuck where they thinking?
They were thinking "fuck, toru hagihara has left and we don't know what to do with the series..... ummm, ok let's just shitcan it onto handhelds. It won't cost us anything to churn out a bunch of sequels to SOTN by reusing assets, and people will buy them anyway coz it says "castlevania" on the box"

>modern gacha mechanics in a single player game for the GBA in 2001
I guess it SORT of made sense with Japan's closeknit society, but even then it's outlandish. This was a Castlevania game, not Mario. Kids aren't going to be passing these secrets during kendo club. The kid playing Akumajou Drakura was probably the weirdo getting kancho'd up the ass until 12th grade.
>>
I loved COTM
>>
>>719366548
Iga had nothinng to do with this one.

The idea with this game was to make it more of a JRPG, so something you can turn off and pick up later. You beat the game once, play as magician and feel like a god. Grinding on the original GBA is less than optimal, but the SP had a backlight, so the pick up and play game design would be better suited for that. There was the DSS glitch, which me and my brother both chose to ignore. There was an other glitch to let you re-enter the Battle Arena, but I didnt know this one as a kid, cards being tied to the battle arena is SHIT.
>>
>>719366235
Still love it. It's one of my favorite Castlevanias.
>>
This game was so good that I finished it multiple times on an un-backlit original GBA.
>>
>>719371972
>>719371959
And I forgot to mention, apparntly, this game was dark. I dont really have memory of that being the case, but people do bring it up. Nowadays, its a non-issue.
>>
the thing is that it's not really a good approximation at all for the way the classicvanias feel(excluding rondo.and X's moon jump) in those games you have a really tight forward momentum with your short hop, whip hop whip hop whip whip hop, every whip is impactful and you're constantly moving forward. compare this to circle of the moon. the increased scale makes your walk feel pathetically slow and because of the need for verticality in a metroidvainia your hop becomes a lethargic vertical jump.
when you whip something in classicvania the windup frames feel satisfying because a connected whip is powerful, only specific power enemies like the night armors take more than a couple hits. in circle of the moon where the game runs bloated healthpools the average enemy you encounter is a brickwall, the windup combined with bloated enemy healthpools feels like a burden.
>>
>>719372837
I remember it well. It was very dark, unplayably dark unless lighting was perfect. We bought all kinds of stupid accessories like the Wormlight to try to help with the screen, but it didn't ever work perfectly. Thank God for GBA SP.
>>
>>719366349
It's not even the worst "metroidvania" castlevania game, let alone the worst in the series
>>
>>719366235
>Controls like a Classicvania
What? you can reverse in midair in CoTM, The controls are very tight and you can maneuver pretty well.
>>
>>719377081
It's between this and Harmony both sub 5/10s while every other metroidvania sits at a 9 or above

Spbp, good man.
>>
>>719366725
Except that none of the book + subweapon abilities are particularly interesting or fun to use, both CotM and AoS have them beat on every front.
>>
Anyone here played the Japanese version? Does the lowered EXP requirement to level up make a difference?
>>
>>719377609
True, I always liked the way CotM controlled. HoD has serious fucking problems with the way the jumping behaves, AoS is fine though.
>>
>>719379896
No, but frankly EXP was rarely a serious problem except for the difficulty spikes like the Dragon Zombies and even those can be managed with a lot of patience and looping them in the corner, ideally with the crucifix.
>>
>>719366235
Controls are fine, it just needed some boost to item/card drop rates. Recently played it and looted like 3 healing potions the entire game.
>>
I still don't know where all this bashing of CotM comes from, like some people trying to normalize it as the standard take and calling people who like it contrarians. It's always "it doesn't give me cards enough" People bought GBAs for this shit, do you think people REALLY cared about Mario 2? Known near-unanimously as the best launch title for the thing when it came out. Sold 500k while HoD flopped at 126k. Yet it's that and the 64 games that 4channers suck off lately while calling OTHERS contrarians, go fucking figure.
>>
>>719380025
Honestly you only really notice the bad consumable drop rates because the game is the only Metroidvania CV without an actual shop from which to buy them. Which is an odd distinction, in retrospect.
>>
>>719379757
this game was so fucking dope. i got it at launch and have played it like 20 times. when i got an SP and could finally see the detail that was hard to make out even in direct sun light, made me appreciate it even more
>>
>>719380114
True, CotM and Golden Sun 1 were my first games for the GBA and those two alone kept me in good stead for a while, it was fucking amazing.
>>
>>719366235
I liked the "mood" and style of this game. I never beat it, but I like it more than Harmony of Dissonance
>>
>>719380792
It has probably the best visuals in terms of actually feeling like an evil castle because of subdued color scheme, even when most of the backgrounds are stark green it looks more like serpentinite or some other kind of marble that suits the decadent interior of a Dracula's aggresively opulent castle. As a result though, it looked really fucking dark on the original GBA, but the garish colors of HoD make everything seem a lot tackier, as well as being kind of painful to look at. AoS being kind of in-between is fine and it does have a lot of color but I still think CotM has the best feel for wandering hostile battlements and ballrooms.

People hate on COTM too much. Sure, grinding for cards sucks ass and those drop rates are fucking cancer, but the game itself is still great.

The game's only real flaw is that you have to double tap to run, which is one of the absolute worst design choices I can think of. Like, it doesn't ruin the game, but fuck me it sure brings it down.
>>
the double tap to run has never bothered me
in fact, its the lack of a run button in the GBA metroid games that makes movement feel a little weird, imho
>>
>>719366235
>"Let's make the only good Metroidvania"

>The game's only real flaw is that you have to double tap to run, which is one of the absolute worst design choices I can think of. Like, it doesn't ruin the game, but fuck me it sure brings it down.
I'm sure this is bias on my end since it was my first ever CV, but this didn't bother me once playing it ever. Not the first time, not replaying the GBA collection decades after the fact having played all the later games that had normal running. It's just a quirk of the game, it takes all of a second to adapt to it and then I never thought of it again.
Also, as an aside, CotM has by far and above the best Carmilla design in the entire series, even though they fucked up the localization for her name somehow.
>>
>>719381843
I know y'all hate the Netflix series here but her design in that is GOATed ngl
>>
>>719382141
No? It's both ugly in the conventional sense and also stylistically, though this can be said for pretty much everything in the shitflix adaptations. It looks for all the world like they wanted emulate the style used in Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust but had neither the talent nor budget to do it properly.
>>
>>719382243
Nah
>>
>>719381843
I like the floating mask look the best. Cool, distinct, and kind of spooky in the sense of being a giant floating face. COTM's probably the best representation in the series of Carmilla as an actual literary vampire, though.
>>
>>719382976
The mask does have charm to it but yeah, it doesn't really evoke the classic novel. I did mean design in the sense of being an actual character rather than a monster, more than anything else.
