How the hell did shitendo flounder asymmetric gameplay so hard especially in this era where it felt like every game had a tack on multiplayer that either no one really engaged with or was an entirely different experience that grabbed a seperate audience. Perfect example gears of war. Tons of people loved that game, only played them for the campaigns then never touched the multiplayer because it was a shotgun hopping simulator. Could you imagine if they just made a gow game where the tablet comands tons of units but they're just cpu opponents not acting like mp meta slaves? They would have made a fortune.

The Wii U was a great console
. The last one with any soul.

Sure but all its experiences were just regular games. The only ones doing asymetric gamplay were like nintendoland and mario party. The best tablet game was probably mm but even that is just 1 on 1.
>>
The botch the reveal then hoped 3rd parties would float them but they turned everything around into multiplat like dudesex and ragman.
Doesn't help they refused to make use of the gamepad in the most obvious sense when they had the opportunity.
They never released a four sword game, replaced the tingle tuner, gutted botw, kibry rainbow curse was literally the worse Kirby game ever made even third parties with an easy layup failed to deliver. Went and got Scribblenauts? Haha fuck you the gamepad mirrors the TV, crystal chronicles rerelease? Wait a couple years so we can botch that. Anything that would make sense as a big time DS sequel or GC to GBA connected release were right there and yet everybody fumbled the ball.

>Anything that would make sense as a big time DS sequel
Always thought it was a waste that Atlus didn't make a new Trauma Center for it. It was also the perfect console to actually make a console port of TWEWY for instead of what they did with the Switch version

There were a few that tried. Zombi U has a very interesting local multiplayer mode that my brothers and I played a lot of. But I will say that generally I agree; they gave up on the gimmick a bit too early due to the poor sales. What the Wii U needed was more power in order to compete. The console needed all the crappy third parties to get the legs needed to justify investing in the tablet stuff, but turd parties abandoned the Wii U because the gap was too great to the PS4.

Zombi u was critically acclaimed the console just didn't sell enough for it to sell well.

So many people were calling for a dnd game. Surprised that never happened. Really a great example of designers knowing less than the plebs.
>>
>>719376625
I always thought amiibos would have been perfect for that, whether it was official DnD or something from another company.
Hell a Kirby Clash title would have been perfect
>>
>>719377013
I always thought they should make mini amiibos and you could play fire emblem on a map on the tablet.

>WiiU was so shit we'll never get another dual screen home console
I'm still mad, the gamepad was so sick
>>
>>719377493
They had those dogshit Pokemon gacha NFC's with Pokemon Rumble, I think it was.

>I'm still mad, the gamepad was so sick
You should be able to pair switch 1 with 2 and use that similarly.
>>
>>719378589
Never ceases to amaze me how much putrid brand destroying shit gets greenlit for pokemon spinoffs when there are so many good romhacks that are made for free.
>>
>>719375291
I just wanted a fossil fighters on this thing man
why did we get frontiers
>>
>>719378020
Switch 2 should have been the switch 2 screen. Really thought they set themselves up for the opportunity. Mousemode is nice but its not even as good as a real mouse.
>>
>>719375902
It also came out when a good portion of nu-devs are coming out of game dev school and all they know is Unreal, Unity and making games with one screen in mind. If Wiiu came out late 90s early 2000s, we'll probably see a lot of interesting things come out of it.
>>
>>719375291
Wii U had plenty of issues outside of just the gamepad
>>
>>719375435
I usually trash console that lose horribly, but I'm actually sad WiiU didn't take off. Would have been great for RPGs.
>>
How did Nintendo succesfully salvage the 3ds from a bad beginning while they were unable to save the Wii U? It can't just be the price drop.
>>
>>719381424
I think they figured the Switch was the attempt at salvaging it. BotW maybe would've come out sooner if they didn't want to save it for Switch launch.

Absolutely. Imagine a proper DnD-style game with the DM using the gamepad screen, setting traps and events in real-time while the players move around on the TV. You could've had asymmetric multiplayer that actually went somewhere beyond gimmicks. But instead we got crap like Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival.
>>
>>719381424
I don't know, 3DS felt cursed. Nintendo handhelds aren't supposed to perform that bad even though it did much better than WiiU.
>>
>>719378020
If dual screen home console was actually a good idea, Sony and Xbox would both have kept supporting their implementations
PS3 and PS4 let you use a Vita as the second screen, while Xbox 360 and Xbox One let you use any phone or tablet running Microsoft SmartGlass. Very few games supported it but some like Deus Ex HR Director's Cut directly re-implemented their WiiU feature set on the other consoles.
The only reason for MS to stop supporting SmartGlass is because fucking nobody liked, developers couldn't figure out a good use for it and players didn't want to use it.
>>
>>719381424
they dropped the 3D gimmick and turned it into a normal handheld.
Notice how only early 3ds games use the mechanic.

>If x was actually a good idea, [company] would have done it
that's never been true. Hybrid systems were a great idea but it took the industry until 2017 to actually do it. Gyro is objectively superior to prior control schemes but xbox is still lagging behind. Steam controller shipped without a dpad, lmao. Game industry is huge, but it's only run by a handful of players that are all fighting against their own companies in order to make something optimal, efficient, and novel. The industry is downright allergic to good ideas. Arguing otherwise would be insane.
>>
>>719384675
>3DS felt cursed.
Yeah, weren't third parties cancelling 3DS titles left and right well ahead of its launch?
>because mobile
Wasn't the opposite happening for the Vita?

>>719381317
Yeah, I realized after the fact that it was actually cool and had potential. Also, playing Wii with a Dualshock shows how motion controls can also work.
>>719375702
Motion aiming in Splatoon works surprising well.
>>
>>719384675
Games which were relatively easy to develop and not much competition. Nintendo was right to push the Switch out given its success.
>>
>>719375291
Nobody except for children play tendieslop
