This is one of the best JRPGs ever made. Why does /v/ hate it?
Yoko is too cringe.
>>719379418I came here expecting the first post to be bitching about it being a gay game again. But instead I see classic Yoko complaints. We're healing.
Dropped it 5 hours in. It played just like your average JRPG for me. Rather easy, unimaginative combat system with none of the experimentation of SaGa games or Bravely Default. Bland environments that don't feel good to explore, the writing is full of clichés and exposition. And the battle screen has a mobile game-tier UI.
>>719379418 Cringe in the best way possible though. Yoko's unhinged style is like watching a fever dream performed by theater kids on LSD. Not everything needs to be sterile and grounded-sometimes you just need a weird android monologue about the nature of souls while giant robot deer scream in the background.
I don't like how a lot of smt gameplay feels very trial and error. On higher difficulties I go to fight a boss and I'm like yep better try all my random shit and see where this gets me, I'm not beating this dude this time around
>>719380106Yoko is grounded though. She has autism in the form of having go speak whatever is on her mind even if it offends people. She even flat out says it's a compulsion.
>>719379260I don't, fucking loved it actually. Played the original, then played Vengeance, had a blast both times. But it is a rough around the edges game. Some of the best combat and presentation of demons in the world, but also some of the worst storytelling and exploration in the series. Even with Vengeance, a lot of aspects of the game's story and environments felt unfinished or poorly thought through. It genuinely feels like a game that sets up some decent developments for the next entry, where, if they actually learn from what worked/didn't work and implement it in the next game, you could have something amazing. SMTV felt like a good step towards something that can be even better, but, by itself, it's messy.I desperately want an SMTVI. I want similar gameplay, music, and presentation of demons walking around the world. But I want a more coherent story with actually interesting characters, a world that is smaller with more content density (I still argue that SMTIV had some of the best environments, but I know I'm in a minority), more emphasis on law/chaos choices that change how the game goes, and please, for the love of god don't fucking make it a Switch exclusive. Half the reason I enjoyed Vengeance was because I could play SMTV at an fps above 22 and a resolution that didn't make it feel like I had vaseline on my eyes.
>>719380430People really need to stop shitting on the story just because they don't understand it.
>>719380109That's what I like about it. I like rebuilding my party to fight a boss.
>>719380649>You only hate it because you didn't get it!No, the story just has uninteresting, flat characters, poorly paced sequences of events, throws 90% of its critical world building into optional, faceless NPC dialogue in the city overworld, eye rolling dialogue, and little to no difference made based around your alignment besides the last 30 minutes. Vengeance improved a lot, but it's still a weaker story compared to other games in the series. And it was still bogged down by general worldbuilding that's sloppily explained/put together, with jumps in character development that can come out of nowhere. SMT has had plenty of great stories and worlds. SMTV is one of the weakest in the series. It's a great game, but I want to see them improve for the future, and acting like it's some great piece of fiction won't do much for that.
>>719379260There's no gog version so I can't pirate it very easily
>>719381226pirate and emulate the switch version if you want something drm-free.
>>719380830Your post makes it pretty obvious you haven't played many of the games. SMT is the series of flat characters that are nothing but their alignments. It's been a thing since SMT1 but even back then you still had a taste of what the chaos hero and law hero thought and did. That disappeared from the series quickly though and characters became blank slates in the worst way. In Nocturne you don't even know who your friends are or why they're your friends. In IV Walter and Johnathan are dense as a brick and only really talk when they hear something in Tokyo that appeals to their alignment just to say "yeah I get it" to remind you what side they're on. SJ at least tried to give you a background on your crew but it is one of the worst paced games in SMT with how they stop and over explain everything happening until you start to fall asleep.V finally went in a better direction from all of those games. Every character has a background and reason for why they think the way they do. Your MC has a ton of characterization and is an actual character. World building isn't shoved in your face (besides Koshimizu's forced throne speech) and you can look for it or not depending on your interest in the story. There is theming, metaphors, narrative parallels, and well thought out mythology usage that shows they actually did some research. Previous games didn't get this. The last game to actually show some care about mythology was probably DDS1 and 2.
>>719379260My favorite streamer hasn't played it so I don't know if its good
I like it
>>719381457>Your post makes it pretty obvious you haven't played many of the games. You're literally arguing against opinions. I can say all the entries I've played and how I vehemently disagree with you, how plenty of older entries did the exact shit you described regarding themes and use of mythos, but it's just my word against yours. What I can say though is that, when SMTV came out, everyone was complaining about the story and lackluster endings. How characters like Yakumo has his entire backstory described through a faceless NPC in the city, how Yuzuru is a dumbass yes man, how Ichiro literally slicks his hair back and suddenly goes from a wimpy dork struggling to comfort Abdiel to outright commanding her. How the endings basically don't even consider your alignment, how alignment itself changes little to nothing in the game, and how the secret ending is locked behind downing Shiva of all things. People here complained about it, reviews online complained about it, everyone did. Compared to other games in the series where, while not some blockbuster narrative experience, people look back on fondly for their stories and characters. So you either give SMTV way more credit than it deserves, don't have the mental capacity to see the quality of the older games, or are just being a contrarian regarding SMTV's main point of contention that was near universally brought up. Either way, I'm not arguing with someone that just goes, "Well clearly you haven't played enough games!" Fucking stupid shit.
>>719379260Too gay.Im an straight man and only play straight man games. Is sad ATLUS SMT team gave up on straight men due to Persona and instead appealed to fags.
>>719382149>gave up on straight men due to PersonaActually it's Persona that gave up on gay men.
>>719381872>replies with how he clearly didn't not understand V's story at all>all these other dumbasses did too, also reviewers!I rest my case.
>>719382564Yeah but imagine.Personachads sit in a bench with their waifu love interest and have a romantic evening. In VV the protag sits with a man and then in another route mopping around because his boyfriend died.Heck female demons dont even attempt to seduce you because you are a faggot. While in IV and Apocalypse female demons cant stop trying to hop on your comp.I fear. I fear VI will be as faggy.
I've beaten IV:A recently, it's going to be a bit before I pick up V. Should I go for vengance or try to stick to the original release? Is V:V more of a +1 edition or a complete revamp or what's the deal here?
>>719383046VV is superior in every way.The normal route is still available in VV.
>>719379260/v/ loves /v/engeance howeverthoughbeit
>>719382734>sit in a bench with their waifu love interest and have a romantic eveningThe bench was a successful mechanic for bonding with the designated companion. It will make a comeback and it will be for a cute girl in VI.
>>719383046Vengeance includes the original route (Canon of Creation) and adds an additional route (Canon of Vengeance) which you can choose between at the start of the game. There's no reason to play the original release.
>>719383091>The normal route is still available in VV.That's what I hoped would be the case, thanks fren. Have a frosty.
>>719382734Demons try to seduce the MC in every single game including V retard. What a dumb thing to say.
>>719383170You miss context if you don't play the original. If all you care about is gameplay, then the original route is pointless.
>>719383264I said that the original release is pointless, not that CoC is.
>>719383046as always VV is superior route.it has new locations and a actual story this time.
>>719383438Fuck VV.They fucked over my guy Lahmu. CoC is better.
>>719379260Didn't it win /v/'s GOTY last year? Or maybe it was behind Metaphor or something.
>>719383536the whole lahmu arc felt strange and out of place in the original desu
>>719383560I misremembered, it won in 2021 (not much competition) and Vengeance placed 15. I was going to attach a pic of /v/'s GOTY through the 2020s so far as proof but I saw this gif of Rika Furude rubbing her ass on a window and decided to attach it instead
>>719379260i 100%'d it thoughbeit>>719380109my nigga use spyglasses
Why are the rare encounters so lame?>Mitama>Spyglass>Use element or itemI miss Jack Frost quizzes and other neat encounters from DDS
>>719383910>dds random encounters>goodThe mitama fights are also ass though, true
>>719383643No it didn't. It made complete sense. The first map was about demons being these cool weird shits and having super powers. You also get a robot butler obsessed with you. Being a Nahobino is awesome. Then you get it all taken away, forced back into boring ass school and get hit with a wake up call that the Nahobino thing is only awesome for you because you got insanely lucky and demons are actually horrible. The MC is a massive chuunibyou lost in books and manga and the second arc with Lahmu is his reality check.
>>719383910Rare encounters used to be much worse. But I think they should just get rid of them at this point.
>>719379260That Two-Face whore is so fucking hot
>>719384560There are hotter demons. She's only carried by her skill animation.
legit only has 2 dungeons more like nier automata than smt
I have a question.I got the PS5 disc for cheap, but have not started it yet. Did they changed stuff in the original route too? Did anything from Vengeance came over or is it the unchanged switch version?
>>719384867It has all of the gameplay improvements but I think the story is the same.
I played for like 20 hours and was enjoying the atmosphere and snippets of plot and collecting Pokes. I walked into a cutscene and a boss attacks me and every turn he does massive physical AoE damage and I die fast and think "Huh I guess I'm meant to go fuse/grind shit with physical immunity" and stopped plaything the game because it felt like boring ass bullshit at that point.I guess I like Persona more because you can have a different face in reserve and don't need to die/reload and run around collecting amagamis to change your own element.
>>719384997I hope this post is a joke.
>>719384867There's some QoL improvements like saving anywhere and warping to fountains. There's no "content" changes.
i'm about halfway through it rn and it really drags. what's so great about it?it's just pokemon with demons.
>>719379260I like it
>>719385076>it's just pokemon with demons.that's the appealsounds like it's not for you
>>719384991>>719385049Thanks, so there is no "why can't I do that?" in this route, in terms of gameplay.I have a month off now, so I wanted to go for both routes. Maybe even all endings.
>>719385110it's the first smt i've really bothered to play all the way through just so i can say i did it. it's boring but i'm going to finish just to dunk on bootlickers like you.
>>719385118You may burn out if you do both routes back to back, it's about 50% the same content.
>>719385148I played through Suikoden 2 without and then with a guide for 108 stars this month, I'm fine :D
too much gameplay unironically
>>719385345Brain dead complaint.
Still waiting to hear what's so great about it? Or this was an elaborate troll thread.
>>719379260/v/ prefers plebsona so it’s only natural
>>719385956Play it and find out
I don't. It's one of my most played jrpg's.The world was damn empty as a result of the basegame being developed for switch though.
>>719384737Post hotter demons, i want to check if what you're saying is true
>>719386074I have. I'm halfway through. I'm at the boss where you fight the combined group of women demons.NOTHING up to this point has really made me feel like I'm having fun. It's a very low frequency game, literally just playing it to understand the hype and now I think I understand its just zoomers being dumbfucks (once again).
Cute girl protagonist
>>719379260>Fujo thread
>>719386239It bugs me so much this pic is unfinished. Who's arm is that?
>>719379260Atluslop is bottom of the barrel.
>>719379260bringing back memories of me playing this withj a mod that gave naho tits when he transformed. good times
>>719381457>Your MC has a ton of characterization and is an actual character.lmao, you fujos say this about every self insert in an atlus game
>its really good bros trust me>"why?">just play it and you'll find outwoah i'm so convinced
Dungeon crawler without dungeons.Levels were too strongly factored into damage.Bosses were all about using items that completely negate an element.Environment was annoying to traverse and visually unappealing.Demon variety was pretty gimped which gets a bit of a pass for being first iteration of this graphical quality.
>>719379260SMTVVengeance is like, the sixth best JRPG of its year. It's a fine 7/10.
Main appeal of SMT is it isn't full of garbage exposition. Same reason Souls is the most popular game. If you want inane dialogue there's Persona.
>>719388907yeah it's a jrpg without any bullshit. I like Etrian for the same reason.
>>719388734I can't think of any other rpgs from last year except watered down mt spinoffs
>>719379260>Design a female main character>Give it a male bodyFucking hate this shit man
>>719379260SMT stories are fucking boring and I don't want long ass JRPGs for shit/nonexistant plot and characters. SMT is basically for dullards.
>>719383560GotY last year was between Pal World and Void Stranger.
