The only thing that was keeping me from truly liking this game was the dogshit reddit-tier writing. Other than that, Sunset Overdrive was one of the most enjoyable games I've played back when it was re-released on PC.
>>
>>719381267
I think I would like it more if they didn't use the Fury Road's development materials without permission or input from George Miller. The behind the scenes jew-ery is really disgusting.
>>
>>719381707
They really need to make a "boat game" franchise with how popular black flag and the sailing in this was.
One that ISNT some jeetslop live service mmo horseshit like skull and bones.
>>
>>719382104
Had a friend that swore up and down on that game back in the day, but yeah, the reddit writing kept me away. I really need to give it a chance eventually
>>
>>719382127
Considering his boner for Furiosa at that point, I'm kinda glad he didn't have too much input. Fury Road was easily my least favorite film in the franchise... that being said, the Furiosa film was weirdly good and made her character much more likable while keeping her believably weak and introducing a solid male lead. Fury Road just felt like Max got cucked out of his own film and shoved to the side for an awful OC.
>>
>>719382006
Agreed. Valhalla cranked every problem with the series up to 11. Shadows isn't even worth discussing.
>>
>>719382140
Dredge.
Sort of Sea of Thieves, though while initially really fun, it gets bare bones real quick. Still, the first time you see a ghost ship fleet is really neat.
>>
>>719381267
5/10 is a little low. The Mad Max game is actually alright. The official consensus was that it was was a 7. But then again the official consensus for Just Cause 3 was a 7 despite that being way higher in quality. At the very least i think Avalanche Games stuff has a history of unnecessarily being harshly received (except for JC4 which deserved all criticism) when they're very fun to play. Just Cause being miles above Mad Max though, those games are just pure fun sandbox in which you can get pretty creative about causing destruction and doing stunts.
>>
>>719382408
boat game was just to quote anon, I really mean ship games, commanding actual massive machines of war and hundreds of men in epic violent battles. All these little baby sailing games are just boring.
>>
>>719382412
I'd say what hurts it the most is the monotony. Having only around 3 enemy types and 1 boss type for a 24+ hour game gets bland real quick, but the combat sorta makes up for it by being fun. The exploration is equally both good and bad as the world and atmosphere are on point, but again, the things you stumble upon and mission types are something you can count on one hand.
>>
>>719382568
Its funny because as I type that out I cant help but think of BotW and TotK's pitifully small enemy pool but it being okay when Nintendo does it.
>>
>>719381712
The same way people love low budget B movies. Their imperfections make them a much more unique experience so even when they aren't objectively great you think back on them with a strange fondness

>>
Delisted now.

I'd also give the Shadow of War game's a 5/10 simply because the lore rape is worth docking 5 points off but the gameplay is fun in both.
>>
>>719382330
I actually liked max having to team up with them and kinda taking a back seat as a sort of guide figure. He still ends up making some important choices and is the backbone to their combat potential in the final fight. He really gives all of himself to help others succeed in this one and he willingly walks off alone in the end. I found it funny that the most intimidating fight scene is max killing bullet farmer and his whole crew offscreen with a machete, and the crows fly away like he’s the embodiment of death.
>>
>>719382951
Eh, if they would have divied it up more between him and Furiosa I might have liked it more, but as it was you have this stronk chick saving these women who went back on their deal they willingly entered and I didn't really like any of them by the end. Max doing the most cool thing off screen really hammered home that it wasn't his movie and more just using his name to sell us a new character.

Like I said though, I think the Furiosa film did a much better job with her character. Sadly, because Furiosa did so badly the final movie that was going to revolve purely around Max again was put on the backburner.
>>
Ghostbusters the video game. Great game but towards the end you can tell the devs were getting to the end of their rope. They eventually just gave up on level design and it becomes a horde shooter.
>>
>>719381506
I've beaten it once, gameplay was goddamn awful, story was short and almost rudimentary, but that cliffhanger still pissed me off so much.

Everyone called this one mid and a Halo clone but I can honestly say I enjoyed a hell of a lot more than those games. Also single player FPS games with a weapon wheel with crazy weapons like Ratchet and Clank is a really under-explored concept. These days games like that just have a generic pistol, shotgun, AR etc. give me something with a crazy alien blob gun over that any day.

It's a rushed mess, but I really liked the story (mainly the first two acts, you can tell they ran out of time for the last one), and the tweaked Origins gameplay was fun. Lot less freedom with Hawke than there was with the origins in Origins, but I thought he was interesting as this sort of reluctant hero who keeps losing as much as he gains.

I still think this is one of the most fun open world games ever made. In the sense of it being an Incredible sandbox.
Massive varied map
Tons of vehicles
Tons of weapons
Lots of wacky tools like mechs and jetpacks and hoverboards and lighting guns
One of the few games where you can actually get into dogfights

The story is retarded and the motorcycles are undrivable but its otherwise fine.
Still looks really good too

Yes, Double Fine should have picked a lane for this game and stuck with it instead of bungling he genre fusion that serviced neither RTS or action adventure fans. Nonetheless the game oozes so much charm that elevates it into being one of my personal favorites.

I'm gonna disagree. I liked the blending of genres. If it was either pure action or pure RTS I don't think it would've been as fun as it managed to be, and the gameplay fit the theme pretty well. Being the roadie, wrangling the crew and taking charge to organize the chaos. It wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed the hell out of it, and I think it holds up better than people give it credit for.

The forgotten Far Cry game. I actually had a ton of fun with it because I love prehistoric settings. It also looked absolutely breathtaking on an original PS4.

The funniest thing about the whole GamerGate debacle is that Gone Home wasn't even bad enough to need journalists to overrate it into 10/10s. It's a perfectly fine and enjoyable walking simulator that would've been a classic somewhere on Tumblr had the whole controversy not erupted.

>Furiosa film was weirdly good and made her character much more likable while keeping her believably weak and introducing a solid male lead
Yeah, I don't really get how people liked Fury Road more. I thought the action was a lot more grounded and faithful to the Mad Max series in Furiosa.
But what the fuck is the timeline now? Max was already an adult in the first movie, which was before everything went completely to shit. Given Furiosa's age, I feel like he should be in his 60s or 70s when they meet.
>>
>>719403549
The actual bait and switch is that the house is completely deserted, but not because anyone was killed or because there's something haunting it: everyone just went away for one reason or another. The chick *is* gay, but arguably everyone gets a better resolution than what they had at the start despite the premise, in which you arrive to your family's house only to find it empty with a note from your sister telling you NOT to investigate what has happened there. It's set up like a thriller but is actually just some alright drama.

If I remember correctly, most of Mad Max after one is told from the perspective of it being a "legend" which is a sneaky way to not have to think about that sort of stuff. Still, it's wild to me that some people like Fury Road. Its everything bad about modern slop but somehow it is circlejerked to no end. Meanwhile Furiosa is everything right with cinema but the marketing made it look like modern slop and put more of a focus on her being the usual stronk unlikable bitch when in reality in that movie she's getting beat up more often than not, gets outdone by what is essentially Solid Snake in Mad Max form, has a nice slow burn story, and has genuinely good and unique action sequences. It also pissed journos off by making her straight. I wish it would have come out in a different time period where replacing male leads wasn't the standard and people hadn't grown leery of the practice. Still not something I like, but this was one of the very few films that did it right.

Elex (first one)
It’s the famous eurojank that actually feels pretty good once you get the hang of combat.
The open map that is somehow more engaging than most open world games, questionable writing, questionable companion dialog etc.. all add up to more than the sum of the parts.
PB going tits up makes me sad that we’ll never get a third installment or prequel- and elex 2 left things on a sour note.
(Also risen 3 - for many similar reasons.)

Marketers in the film industry are legitimately retarded and don't care about the content they're marketing.

I like the added lore, Celebrimbor being willing to fight Sauron but being afraid of "mother nature" was cool, the whole "let's waste Sauron time fighting a meaningless war" was a cool way to insert itself in the lore without disrupting the Fellowship's effort and sacrifice, Sauron and Celebrimbor being shadows of each other is also a great way of respecting the "power corrupts everything" part of the story, Talion becoming a Ring-wraith and dying at the Mt Doom explosion is a great way to tie it to the movie without disrupting anything.
Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of flaws, but its far from "rape".
>>
>>719405767
I loved the weapon crafting but you should be able to have 4 weapons instead of 2..like the previous ones. There's no Horror or dread anymore just * insert anyway I started blasting meme*. Best gameplay of the series but it's not even a dead space game. The space segments and 0 g were great. Not exactly what you're asking for, but I could literally write an essay about how this is a game where every element is ALMOST great but the final result is a game that's not even a 5/10. Obviously it's a bit of a niche genre but for people who are into this kind of thing it SHOULD be an absolutely amazing game, but it's just not good in any way. It's like going on a hike and having the absolutely perfect route planned out, but then for some reason deciding to make the journey while having your shoes filled with sharp gravel. It's an absolutely painful experience that makes something that could've been beautiful simply not worth even attempting.

And the 40k-flavored pseudo-sequel is even worse because for every improvement it makes (mainly in the graphics and level design), it absolutely ruins two other things to the point where you can't even see the potential greatness anymore and it's just bland slop.

Yes, the writing is an absolute tryhard cringefest where the vocabulary of every character is at least 50% uncreative swearing (plus 10% creative swearing) and I'm not about to defend that, but everything else is great. Too bad it ends on a blatant sequel hook but there will never be a sequel.

>Double Fine should have picked a lane for this game and stuck with it instead of bungling he genre fusion
Hard disagree. The issue wasn't that they blended two genres, the issue was that if you looked at the advertisements you'd think it was a classic action adventure game so it never had a chance to find the right audience. The RTS elements weren't bad, arguably they were better than the action elements, they just weren't what the target audience was looking for.

Avowed was alright. I think it kinda hamstrung itself by inviting the comparison to Skyrim. I remember all the shitposting about how you couldn't steal random forks from people's tables in Avowed, because that's the kind of riveting gameplay bethdrones crave.

I never played Outer Worlds because it didn't appeal to me in the first place, but Avowed was alright as long as you're not looking for a bethesda open world game. The open world elements in Avowed are relatively minor and while there are some exploration elements they're more like little extras than any significant focus. It's a much more linear action-RPG experience than something like Skyrim or Starfield which focus on the open world first and the actual gameplay second.

Elex reminded me of this.
It has an ungodly amount ox mind-boggling problems and game design decisions but they all somehow hinder each other from actually ruining the game.
In 2 they unfortunately made it through the door.

The level scaling is much less retarded in the PC version or the remastered version. It's only game-ruining in the original console release.

I might actually consider playing it then, I always disregarded it cause I heard if you accidentally beat too many random encounters the game becomes unbeatable

I tried it last week after I remembered playing it a bit at a friend's house when it was new, and I only managed to last an hour. Fetch quests, ugly environment, braindead combat, and sickening viewbobbing when sprinting.
This is the only good thing to come of it.

Yeah that was only a thing in the original console release. Grinding still isn't great in the later versions but at least it won't ruin your playthrough and you can still do it as long as you do it intelligently. Basically due to how gains work, grinding against hard enemies or loads of enemies at once is fine, grinding against small groups of weak enemies is useless.

I would've simply hated it if I'd played it as a kid that loved World 2, but I finally got around to playing it a few years ago, and I find it highly interesting in just how weird and different it is.
Apparently it got pushed out the door mostly unfinished because the Namco Bandai merger was happening, and Bandai had no interest in publishing it.

that's not what i meant. Something that should be rated 5 is now rated 7. It's not that people have higher standards but the ratings are inflated. The same goes for anime as well. Go back to the 2000s and the top rated shit is usually in the 7s (shit that's considered classic) now look at this year only and you'll find plenty of 8s
>>
>>719422315

>>719423723
I think this game rightfully gets shit for its hamfisted meta-messaging, but at the same time people focus too much on this while ignoring the many great touches in its actual, non-meta narrative. The amount of storytelling it manages to do with details like Walker's increasingly unhinged combat barks is just beautiful once you start paying attention to them. And despite the infamous meme status of the white phosphorous scene, it has multiple moments where you do get to make an actual choice and they're all really well-done for a game of this type.

I really didn't think much of it. The gameplay and mission design was straight up bad, no tactical depth at all, story was very run of the mill, characters were all one dimensional and most of them just quirky anime trope stuff. It's not good at all. I just liked the atmosphere a lot, reminded me of classic Fire Emblem (which I dearly miss, I cannot stand the newer FE games). But aside from the visuals and the atmosphere I didn't find much quality to appreciate, I think giving the game 5/10 would be too generous.

But they have a kind of awesome setting and aesthetic that I enjoyed a lot. A nice mix of camp and 2000s griminess. And a lot of lovingly crafted blood/gore effects

Kill la Kill If seemed to be a total disappointment at the time, which is understandable as it has about 2 hours of gameplay total interspersed with an additional 2 hours of non-interactive cutscenes. It's also completely unbalanced to match characters' abilities from the show, and there's very little to do beyond the campaign and a few minigames.

That said, though, the fighting gameplay is actually really fun, fast, and fluid, and the character models look fucking spot-on to the TV show. If the game had an arcade mode and was sold for $40, I think it would have been a very acceptable budget title. As it is now, though, it's really quite a mess. I got it on sale for $3 in a PSN sale and still feel a little ripped off.

Metal Gear Survive. The dust was a lot of fun to explore and it should have been the whole game, along with more dungeons. The tower defense thing was garbage.

Because it's one of the few attempts to do the wasteland and by extension Max right. Still has one of the best depictions of the Black on Black to date in vidya form. Even if it comes in far too late to be actually usable. The game should've had a NG+ mode where you can start off with all of the collected vehicles. So you can run with the Twelve or Scuttlebutt in place of Magnum Opus. Might be difficult to break into some of the camps without the poon turret and tank rifle I guess.

This game was the shit and I was super sad it died because redditors shit themselves over microtransactions
All the characters were obtainable with currency you could earn from just playing, the only locked things were skins
The game literally died because of niggers complaining about paid cosmetics I'll admit they were slow as fuck with the patches on release which didn't help
And now every single game has them

That and playing as the resident alcohol who can heal himself by skulling bottles of bourbon straight was rad. The guns could've been a lot better because they were beyond trash. A waste of an inventory slot that was only good for braining raiders in the favela.

Grab the mods that bump up the durability on melee so you aren't constantly backtracking to workbenches for repair. Not to the point of being unbreakable but enough that the game doesn't slow to a crawl. Then get a few felling axes and go to town on the undead bastards.

nah it sucked. 1 single ammo type? just give the guns infinite ammo at this point. and the weapons always ended up looking like an ugly amalgamation of mechanichal parts without the slick finish of the pre-made ones from the previous games
the game also abused the arena type spawning for the necros, when it was reserved for a few key setpieces in DS1 for example (medical wing and decontamination). it was so predictable in 3 because every other encounter would be a siege/arena fight
and the fucking axe wielding necromorphs oh my god fuck this game man it's fucking alien shooter 2 without the good movement

I still really like DA2, and actually love its premise, but I feel like it embodies where EA really started sinking their hooks into things. Mainly the rushed dev time, repetitive action combat, and companion character cut for DLC.

Still really liked the characters and the idea of them developing as a group over several years though. It still bums me out that we couldn't have seen that idea tackled in a more fleshed out and polished way.

Remedy still has this issue where the story and artistic direction can be super fun and creative, but the actual combat is generally a slog.

I loved Control for its weird-ass lore and sidequests, but if I had the option I think I'd cut out like 80% of the random combat encounters with standard soldier enemies.

I think my issue with Brutal Legend coming after Psychonauts was how spread thin it felt. The art design was super cool, the music was great, the main characters were fun, but compared to Psychonauts where I felt like the entire map was packed to the brim with scavenger hunts, fun character interactions, and secrets to find, Brutal Legend felt like a big-ass open world purely to justify driving around cool empty vistas and listening to the radio. Not the worst reason to have an open-world, but it's a shame they got rushed for time at the end and couldn't do more to fill it up.

Still have a soft spot for it though. Needed more Lita.

>slot reels mechanic.
It's not that difficult to manipulate. It's far easiest to do a 1-2 or 1-2-3 combo past that it gets to be a bit much. It has been like 20 years, but if my memory serves me 3 slots away from the time you hit stop then 7.
>>
>>719451342
Odd though it may sound, that actually makes me like it less. Manipulating a slot reel is just instrinsically annoying to me. I can only tolerate them if they give effectively random results.

>Show me your 5/10's. Bring me your mid but beloved.
That's "I liked it but." You're acknowledging it's flawed but you liked it any ways. "Fuck you I liked it" means you disagree with the consensus that it's flawed, are dismiss the arguments against (and the people who make them) hence the "fuck you." There's a huge difference, and you seem to be trying to deliberately misrepresent one as the other for the sake of getting people to post games they actually enjoy under the lens of forcing them to acknowledge them as bad ("mid") to start a new cycle of irony poisoning and insincerity. So FUCK YOU. I DON'T LIKE YOU. UP YOURS FAGGOT.

That game is like double the fun if you are actually Venezuelan, which I am. Weirdly enough, I liked the downgraded PS2 version better. Yeah the shitty draw distances made the game super foggy, which isn't right for a sunny tropical country like Venezuela, and it didn't have the excellent vibes that Playground of Destruction did, but the gameplay just hit better for the PS2 version of World in Flames than the next gen one (which I played on PC). Also, very minor thing, but in the PS2 version you could steal a vehicle and drive it back to your home base to keep it, in the regular version you couldn't.
>>
>>719381506
Fuck yeah I understand you. I actually 100%'d the achievements on the 360 for the dossier files they unlocked. Ended up finding out how OP Jones was since he could just spam blood and fire wards at no cost. btw every hit on the Roman boss counts as a kill towards the melee cheevo.
>>
>>719457190
Based schizo rant. You’re absolutely right and also completely insane. But I get it-this whole "beloved mid" circlejerk is just another excuse for people to dump on games they secretly love but are too cowardly to defend earnestly, so they hide behind irony and call it "mid" to maintain forum cred. Meanwhile, I'm over here saying Ty the Tasmanian Tiger was peak platforming and I'd risk public ridicule again to do a full playthrough. It's not mid, it's soul.

I played it on PS2 and then later Xbox 360, my memory of the differences is hazy by now but I do remember EA fucking up the servers on the 360 at one point so that you literally couldn't even launch the game. I developed a retarded verbal stim with "Caracas" for awhile after playing it. Yeah I think that era of BioWare as a whole (2010-2013) was kinda the beginning of the end. They were still pumping out mostly good games, but the cracks were starting to appear and you could tell by the end that things were about to change for the worse.

Compared to something like Thunderdome where they could run a pre industrial town off pigshit this game was quite depressing when you look closer at it. Gastown in general is a fucking horrific place and that's considered the economic powerhouse for the whole region. The outer factions are little more than podunk towns sniffing around for scraps and even they end up paying what is effectively tribute to Max in exchange for him not fucking their shit up. When you consider that the game takes place on a now dried up seafloor you can only assume that it is far worse for the rest of the planet. The Big Empty might as well be the Pacific Ocean minus the water with how vast it's meant to be in the narrative. No one can cross it by car let alone on foot.
