They absolutely did. Digital cameras have been sold much longer than you think. Olympus Camedia, the brand visible, has been sold since 1996 though I can't make out what exact model that is.

As for HD ("high density") diskettes, those have been around fucking forever.

>30+ is realizing you're nostalgic no more, and that vidyas lost their appeal.
>>
>>719396802
It's really sad to see people fail to reconcile with this fact.
The world moves forward, and you eventually stop being a child, and ergo, stop being the demographic that gets appealed to.
I'm always reminded of the reactions to Michael Bay's Transformers and had a fascinating discussion about them back around 2010 with a guy who got fucking pissed at them, hated every moment of watching them, and just came to the realization that he was old and that this was the shit kids liked now.
Probably how midlife crisis' get started.

For me vidyas and anime porn was enjoyable exactly until my peers started having kids.
That's when I realized I shouldn't just be reveling in these things because it's ultimately hedonistic and irresponsible, and that's why most of it is stupid and made for kids.
We've lived in a very strange time these past 5 years especially, where it felt like movies, games and entertainment was trying to age with its growing audience. All the classic companies like Nintendo, Sega, and even porn artists being well into their 20s trying to take child-favorite franchises and adulting their appeal for the near-30 audience.

And then it started to slip as adults were over 30 and actually moving on, trannies everywhere, making it apparent that never having a "Puff the Magic Dragon" moment makes one mentally ill, like Sonic fans.

Then Sonic became more for autists only.

It became more apparent that adults who like Sonic are always autistic manchildren, or very young kids who aren't really "fans" because of the movies that they'll quickly, and have already, grown out of.

Increasingly you're left just with bread-crumbs of what used to be, as you're all done eating, but you kept sitting.

Waiting for more slop.

Buying a Switch 2.

Nobody else bought one but you.

Trying to make some loli appeal out of a character that's clearly made to appeal to young girls with her "Frozen" appearance.

35 year old /v/ users are typing.

>PLEASE GOD LET ME SEE HER HYMEN
>PLEASE GOD LET ME SEE HER HYMEN
>PLEASE GOD LET ME SEE HER HYMEN

You realize, you're a mentally ill person, on 4chan, in a crowd with the rest of you, who failed to move on, and get a fucking life.

Rewatch Peter Pan. Listen to Puff the Magic Dragon Again. Take one more hard look at Sonic The Hedgehog, and realize it was never supposed to be for you, for your entire life.

At some point, you ate up everything except some breadcrumbs. And there's no more slop to consume.

I've seen a lot of recent nostalgia for them and people talking favorably on their visuals (when I remember a lot of hate for that as well).
If you want other examples.
>original X-Men got a ton of shit for not being like the cartoons or the comics, now a fondly remembered superhero film
>Fantastic Four got tons of shit by basically everyone in existence, kids who watched it grew up and are now saying it's the best F4 film (it's not, the 1994 one is the best one)
>Doctor Who's Matt Smith seasons basically killed off a lot of longterm investment the revival had created, but in turn had gotten a large new audience into Who
Stuff like that.
I also used capeshit because it is a good benchmark for this- like, compare the 60s Spider-Man cartoon to the 90s one, and then to the Raimi films and later the Disney films.
All completely different iterations of the same guy and the same antagonists, all popular and beloved by their respective audiences, and every newer one getting tons of shit from existing fans (yes, even Raimi, which got shit from the same fags who didn't like X-Men for comic lore inaccuracies).

Probably the most famous example of stuff being done for a new audience is Star Wars, because retards here will defend it and not see the irony.
The prequels are the way they are because Lucas was focused on appealing to the then modern millennial children. Was he successful? Considering we have daily prequel threads on several boards, I'd say he was.

>>
>>719397408
>It became more apparent that adults who like Sonic are always autistic manchildren, or very young kids who aren't really "fans" because of the movies that they'll quickly, and have already, grown out of.

>>
>>719396947
>>719398746
The reality is that a generalized medium cannot be a hobby.
"Gaming" is not a hobby. Your hobby is not "video games in general", that's a pastime at best.
"Anime" can be a hobby, "RPGs" can be a hobby, but anyone who goes "Gaming is my hobby" is, in all likelihood, an incredibly boring person.

This desu. I'm playing Chrono Trigger with my daughter and she complains about the graphics, but likes the funny voices I give the characters. Her party is Chrono, Robo and Ayla because "It's the past and the future at the same time!"

>>
>>719398972
It's child abuse to force your media tastes on your children. My parents used to force me to watch Forrest Gump as a kid and listen to the Grateful Dead and I hated them with every fiber of my being.

>>
>>719399416
I've probably seen Forrest Gump hundreds of times. I don't think anybody in the world hates that movie as much as I do. I've written essays on how much I hate it.

The whole movie is just boomer self masturbatory shit, and nostalgia bombing so they can grin and nod about how they remember that. And if you're just a kid and not a boomer all the pop culture references in the movie mean nothing to you.
>>
>>719399612
You had a weird childhood, Anon, that's for sure. But that's no reason to call it child abuse when a parent plays a game with their kid
>>
>>719398972
Based I can't wait for this. I would love if my daughter enjoys jrpgs and I'm going to try my best to make it happen
>>
>>719399227
>It's child abuse to force your media tastes on your children
That's why I don't make it known I'm forcing them.
I just only have the games I liked hanging around and made a fake set of TV "channels" that only show anime and cartoons I pre-approved.
>>
I don't miss it, but I do treasure those memories. I got to see a fraction of the rapid development of video game hardware and software that older players did, but I still got to grow up alongside the medium to an extent.

I don't really yearn for those times nearly as much as I do for a hypothetical future where I get to play games with my own children.
>>
>>719399680
A lot of millennial parents do the same thing nowadays. Like video games for example, their kids may not have any interest in videos games, but they're making their kids play the NES games they liked as a kid. Or they're making their kids play their favourite childhood games when the kid would rather play the games that their friends are playing.
>>
>>719399856
I always read this sentiment online but have never seen it reflected in real life, speaking as a millennial who knows plenty of millennial parents.
>>
>>719399612
>I've probably seen Forrest Gump hundreds of times
lmao what. My condolences if that's real. I've watched my favorite TV show like 20 times. It became something like a yearly ritual. And even that feels like insanity to me.
>>
>>719399227
i used forrest gump for EVERY single report i had to make in English, since most of the movie is just shit happening, i made it work for something like 10 different units.

travel lit, historic lit, AV lit, war lit, crime fiction (had to really focus in on the black panther stuff and how it was illegal, but not immoral, because my teacher said my draft on the watergate 1 minute wasn't enough of a connection), i think there was a unit on growing up or something? or maybe it was inclusivity and i just waxed poetic about how forrest grew up despite his issues, thanks to his parents while jenny stalled out, due to her parents, i also cant quite remember if it was biz lit (we were meant to do gatsby) or something about nautical literature, but one report had a solid 2 minutes of listing off things you can do with shrimp, as a quote.

my teachers said they hated it, but the way they all smirked while i was presenting, and the B+ average proved they at least appreciated the commitment to the bit.

i didn't even like the movie at first, it was just an easy report for the first 2 units.

Feels truely blessed to enjoy everything from windows 3.1 and onward due to my father running his own business so computers were a part of my childhood, i'd sit with him while he played Myst and that interested me way more than my older sister's nintendo with mario. PC for life, a lot has changed but it's still my number one. Assembled my first desktop freshman year of HS and have been going that route ever since.

Maybe? The Iraq War was disastrous on so many fronts. You could blame either 9/11 or Dubya being President.

The mall.

My city spent a shit ton of money to build one of those mega malls, and it was based. It had an ice rink that NHL team "practiced" at, laser tag, a movie theater, small bowling alley, arcade, and go karts. Think it even had a fucking skate park.

When I got my driver's license, I'd pick up a couple of buddies in my junker and meet up with a couple other friends when the mall opened. And we'd stay until it closed just window shopping, playing a bit of Magic at the card shop, catch a matinee movie, and hanging around the arcade.

Now it's all gone and apparently the whole is an industrial/business park.

It's demographics. I used to work at a restaurant in high school. I visited a few years later when I finished college and noticed there were Mexicans working there. I thought that was weird, because this was less than an hour from the Candian border. How did they get here? Why did they come? When my grandparents died, the entire place was run by Mexicans. The job paid for my first car, gave me an excuse to sneak off to my girlfriend's house whenever I wanted, gave me money for gas and cigarettes and beer and connections for weed and molly, and taught me how to work. The SS contribs I put in there meant I cleared the minimum contribution by 28. Kids these days don't get that cool stuff. At best, they're reading books for school to train for jobs which are also going away. At worst, they're trooning out. Look at this captcha and tell me I'm not being real

>>719415494
Nothing to talk about
>>
>>719396947
This is mostly true. As a 30+ anon, games do start to lose their appeal. At least the vast majority of the. Anything that takes 20+ hours to beat instantly sets off red flags, because there are honestly less than a couple dozen games ever made that actually deserve that runtime. I still play a lot of games, but most of them are shorter and can be cleared in 10 hours or less. The truth is that games as a hobby aren't worth the time, most of the time.

I can still enjoy retro games, even ones I never played as a kid. And I enjoy some indie games as well.

That isn’t gonna happen for today’s generation, look at the birth rates, nobody is having kids anymore
I actually think this and the growing normalization of kiddie franchises (sanik, pokeymans, etc) as being “respectable adult hobbies” are strongly correlated. Nobody in our generation will ever really BE a real adult because the economy is dogshit and ai will take away all the jobs. Hell, few people in our generation even try to ACT like a real adult because what’s the point of trying to put on a ridiculous facade of “mature responsible man” when everyone knows it’s a lie and you’ll still be flipping burgers at mcdonalds or living off welfare when you’re 45.

That era was peak-the excitement of stumbling on imports you'd only ever read about in mags like EDGE or Official PS mag. we had an internet cafe called the barracks.

back when i was like 15 on weekends i would get my $5 pocket money, wait until 9am, to call my mate, walk the 20 minutes to his house, hang out with his little sister for 5 minutes while i got up and got ready, then we would walk 20 minutes into town to the cafe.

$5 to the guy at the front counter would get you 3 hours of access (no idea how they made money)
we would play this cool new game called warcraft 3, doing skirmishes against the PC for a round or two, then poke our heads over the top of the screen and say "hey anyone want to play a warcraft custom game?" and every fucking day, one of those other autists would say yeah, and we would play whatever their obsession was that no-one else would play with them.

sometimes it was dota, sometimes it was an entire custom campaign about lord of the rings the siege of Gondor, my favourite was island troll tribes.

once we ran out of time (depending on who was on the counter they would sometimes just let your timer run if you were in game) we would go out into the town, do some window shopping, check out the book store, see what was in the video eze, see if anything good had rolled into the revolution CDs second hand game store, check what movies were running Sunday (WOW, more starwars? i loved the first 3!), and just sort of existed around people.

i went back the the barracks recently, its a gastropub now, but the bartender apparently used to game there on weekdays, so he pointed me to their new spot.
it was depressing as hell, nothing but 50 year olds playing mmos silently by themselves, and every empty PC seat just mining crypto, when i asked the guy at the counter if people still did LAN events he said they'd had to split the network up because one of the regulars would keep installing keyloggers if they didn't.

sad to see such a community minded place wither and die, but i guess its cheaper to just buy a computer and games nowdays.

you think you know crippling existential dread? you are like a baby. my existential dread was realizing corporatism had already long invaded every aspect of life and perverted it to some sick bread and circus routine decades before my birth. you miss old video games? the fundamentals haven't changed since their inception, just the coat of paint. they've always been dull half challenges designed as distractions for children. you miss the play pens? you mean stacks of piping with some colorful foam zip tied all across it? the ones they can never really clean and don't maintain and were condensed into tightly packed poorly air conditioned sunrooms, acting only as a way to bait children into being so incessantly obnoxious their parents have to stop and spend money? you miss big box toy stores? you mean the giant industry dedicated to spamming over-gained commercials to yet again create petulant children who will force their parents to spend money? the one that pumped out so many questionable plastic items designed to be manipulated by children? the ones that replaced small individual owned artisan stores? the ones that also existed on the same premise of wrenching money, but somehow got worked into a work-reward structure as training wheels for the protestant work ethic? third places? you mean entertainment venues whose proprietors only keep open for the sole benefit on profiting on the need for optimized windows of relaxation time?

everything has always fucking sucked, fuck you!

the sort of unofficial "town hall" we had, really it was just a glorified post office with a bunch of other connected rooms that would be rented out for events and various clubs, including a makeshift bar. you could kind of just walk in and do whatever during the day, my friends and our families would go during the week after school, our parents would just stay in the bar whilst we'd hang out in the other nearby rooms. it was gigacomfy because it was usually completely empty except for us, the rooms were really big and they had a PS2, so we could just kind of run around and do whatever.
unfortunately it was filled with asbestos so it got torn down about a decade ago. naturally, some shitty housing estate got built over it.

>The world moves forward, and you eventually stop being a child, and ergo, stop being the demographic that gets appealed to.

I would argue that right now one of the biggest problems is that mainstream society is NOT appealing to kids.

Look at Disney trying to turn Marvel and Disney into girl franchises, every Cartoon being about brown girls. From a young age you're stuck with specific video games or anime to actually find stuff that appals directly, all the mainstream media spaces are boring as fuck.
