By the time FFX came out people had genuinely moved on, and it was only Square's own insistence to milk VII for all its worth to make up for the delays and failures of XII and XIII that pushed VII back into the spotlight. The first direct sequel wasn't even a compilation title, it was X-2 because X's popularity was comparable to VII's. VII's status even before all this was largely by chance, since it just happened to be the first FF title that used 3D graphics and the PS1 install base was double that of the SNES.It's a good game sure but it's given more importance than it deserves.

It takes place in 3 universes, Universe 1 is the continuation of Remake, Universe 2 is an alternate reality of FFVII, Universe 3 is the original FFVII universe untouched.You play in all 3 universes during the game, the only time you know you're in a separate universe is during Zack sections. For the rest of the game, you need to pay attention to see if you're in the Remake timeline or Original timeline.
