Should game developers just dont play video games?
>>
when game devs play videogames we get 200 soulslikes a year, so yes
>>
>>719395379
Millennials that grew up on games and whose life experiences are only games now trying to make games based on their childhood memories of games indeed do create some of the most awful games.
>>
>>719395379
I’m sure hideo would rather be watching movies than playing games.
Its like saying authors would be better off not reading books. Or painters shouldn’t appreciate other paintings. Absolutely stupid.
>>
>>719395485
>the only two options are never playing games or only playing games
Also which of these millenial devs are you accusing of having no life experiences other than playing games? Your point falls apart at the slightest scrutiny

Most game developers hate video games.
Most game developers will proudly tell you they would never play the games they make.
Never get high on your own supply.

We already knew he hates games and would rather make movies. What's sad is that he doesn't just do that and instead pollutes gaming with his cutscene filled excuses for "games".

Just like any good writer never reads books or artists never look at art, game devs should focus solely on the political realities of today and make their games a vehicle for exploring contemporary issues. If they don't you just end up with trash made for children filled with too much gameplay and other nonsense instead of a deep, thought-provoking statement about the latest scandal on twitter.

This hack doesn't even like videogames, he keeps doing them because he's never going to be invited to do anything on Hollywood

I think people should have a variety of life experiences to make good art

People who grew up with only video games make super meat boy and other games that are very derivative of games they grew up with. People who grew up rock climbing and also Video games will have a fresh mindset and can make something interesting and new.
This all being said, Kojima probably picks from the worst imaginable sources to make his retarded movie games.
>>
Absolutely, an artist shouldn't look at other people's paintings, he should look at real faces, landscapes, animals etc.
A writer shouldn't read other works of fiction, he should read history books, speeches by politicians, medieval texts etc.
Anyone that tries to make an RPG should play tabletop RPGs, anyone that tries to make a FPS should try to handle a gun in real life first, anyone that tries to make a flight sim should try flying a real plane, anyone that tries to make a dating sim should try dating in real life first, the list goes on.

Reality is always superior to an imitation of it.

Mainstream games today are more about offering audio visual experiences to an audience that often doesn't even like video games, so it makes perfect sense that someone like Kojima doesn't play video games.
If you create a platforming game, or a shooter, focused solely on pure gameplay, you'll get 2,000 sales on Steam, 1,500 of which will be during a sale, and half of those will be at regional prices because it's in poorer countries where people tend to buy games with simpler graphics.
>>
>>719396094
yeah maybe he's missing his own point about not playing too many games, his games are like a collection of references from a single source, but its movies instead of games
>>
>>719395379
David Lynch did not watch a lot of movies, Nietzsche said that if you read other people all the time you would never write your own (paraphrasing a lot)
>>
>>719395379
Yes actually because all the best games you're thinking about from the 90s and 2000s were most likely not developed by gamer shut-ins, and they actually went outside and have varied experiences in other fields or life in general. Which is how they actually innovated instead of a lot of modern devs who like to say "my game is like this old game combined with this other old game!!!"
>>
>>719396102
i got banned from the yiik discord for talking too much then calling someone a slur
>>
>>719396046
Mischaracterization. Good game developers tend to have little interest in playing games, instead they enjoy making interesting game systems. By the time the game is complete, their fun is done. Also, good game devs find inspiration in the world, rather than other people's games.
>>
>>719400162
>>719399842
You're talking about the artistic side. But video games also have a technical side. You can't make a game without playing a lot of games of the same genre first, otherwise you will end up with a project full of flaws. Engineering does not ignore prior knowledge because that would make projects less original, for example...
There are decades of accumulated technical and philosophical knowledge about video games, and ignoring them is a recipe for making a bad game.
>>
Hideo Kojima put a VTuber tranny creature in Death Stranding 2. He also puts a bunch of fake Hollywood "friends" in his games. His game design are spreadsheets that haven't changed since MGS Peace Walker on the PSP. The UI, the way info dumps are done, everything hasn't changed since that PSP game in all the big budget games he's done since them. MGS5 (unfinished), Death Stranding 1, Death Stranding 2, all the same gameplay loop with the same exact UI and same exact busywork spreadsheets.

I don't hate Hideo Kojima because his games are dogshit, I can choose not to play them after learning my lesson that he lost his touch with MGS5. I hate Hideo Kojima precisely because he's trying to model himself like an auteur. The only reason you know him is because Konami was trying to market Metal Gear Solid with his name, the same way EA was trying with American McGee in Alice games. Kojma's conduct with the English localization staff dates back to MGS1 and MGS2, both translators offered their thoughts on working with the man and they are negative. The English voice cast, not just David Hayter, offered generally mild to negative impressions of him. Remember what's her name Quiet's mocap girl? Dumped and forgotten. Hayter said it best when he admitted Kojima was trying to get Kurt Russell to voice Snake in MGS3, he's so in love in Hollywood.

Resetera, Reddit, and NeoGAF are glazing his asshole because Hideo Kojima doesn't wipe his ass. The lack of intelligence is astonishing for the average Hideo Kojima cultist. Tons of famous film makers didn't obsess over their contemporaries, but they did have a grasp on film history. Beethoven and Mozart were alive in the same time and they absolutely knew what each other were doing. Hideo Kojima is just the modern iD games John Carmack and John Romero. I'm not a liberal cuck but his portrayal of women in MGS4 bosses and MGS5 Quiet should tell you enough about how "2deep4me" this hack is. Neil Druckmann and Hideo Kojima suck.
>>
>>719400710
Oh and by the way the reason MGS3 was top down was because Hideo Kojima, famous for not playing other games, didn't know the genre moved past him. MGS3 Subsistence and MGS3 HD/MGS3 Delta remakes all use the modern third person angle. Death Stranding 2's gameplay is just PeaceWalker, a PSP game from 2010. Even Mario games innovate more than Kojima's stale gameplay formula of mobile game spreadsheets and outdated UI.

Hideo Kojima's writing is amateur hour and I'm convinced he was carried by someone else in MGS2 and MGS3.

People keep repeating the bullshit hearsay about David Lynch not watching movies. He didn't watch a ton of modern movies in the later part of his life, but he was an absolute film history nerd, went on the record gushing over films like Sunset Boulevard and It's A Wonderful Life.
>>
>>719395379
what's happening in movies is more important to incorporate into his games
>>
Hideo Kojima doesn't wipe his ass after shitting. What a fucking visionary says Reddit, Resetera, neo /v/. Hold on let me roll up some expository story dumps over dialogue on your Codec or Sony Walkman Earpods, then pause the game so you can do more spreadsheets management. But don't take too long GAMERS I'M BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL FOR YOU, because BossMan FailedFilmSchoolStudent cutscene will play out long enough to make your controller's batteries run out. Let me wink at the camera so you don't miss out on the subtlety of Hideo Kojima and his yes-men enablers of his Hollywood pretentiousness.

It's telling how much the world has moved on from his game design but he seems to be getting propped up by people who have low self esteem and need validation as games are an artform. I pity the Kojima cultist drone.
>>
>>719400498
If that was the case people wouldn't be playing games that are centuries old, like card games and chess. Almost as if the game mechanics are mostly there to support the experience.

Note I'm not talking about making games that sell well, since that's more of a marketing and business problem.
>>
Hideo Kojima uses keyboard arrows and doesn't realize the world moved on to WASD. He's too busy taking pictures in the real world of his vlogger food rating lifestyle to incorporate modern sensibilities to his dogshit walking sim movies.

>"young people are playing games a lot, and that's good," but they should also try "to feel art or see art and then digest it themselves and create new games"
I understand what he means and can't say I disagree. The best video games are those made by people who have done more with their free time than just playing video games.

same as most art. "art about art" is just wankery, same as "writing about writing" etc even if it's done well. At best it's kinda clever and entertaining, but it really can't go any further than that. It's fun, that's as good as it gets.

he says this, but his games are just anime trope shit with some better cinematography. All his characters act like anime people and the story uses all the anime tropes.

He's really just a weeb. Like a mangaka who makes a manga about a real world thing they know about, which serves to distinguish it slightly from other stories, but it's ultimately just manga with all the tropes and shit, same here but anime with cinematography.

Modern art is stricken by a phenomenon I’ve dubbed “artistic inbreeding”, where artist (a game dev, in this instance) simply replicates art he likes instead of drawing from his own personal experiences. This is how we get soulless slop without innovation or personal touch. Millennials and zoomers are largely incapable of creating good art because they’re losers who don’t have any life experiences to draw from. Only media they’ve consumed.
>inb4 “all art is derivative!”
Good art is 50% derivative, 50% personal and innovative.
>>
>>719402779

>>
>>719395379
I'm afraid that Mr Creatividad is 100% correct. Any art form that gets captured by navel gazing ends up hollowing itself out. Comics suck for many reasons but one of them is that they became an endless revision of themselves and their characters. City 17 is memorable because Viktor Antonov was an architecture and urban exploration nerd who kept hanging out at the Gare de Lyon while it was being gutted and renovated hence the combine architectural style of otherworldly technological tumors growing on nineteenth century buildings. You need to be a bit of an outsider to your craft to truly shine otherwise you literally have nothing to bring to your audience because you have the exact same set of cultural references as them.

I didn't like Peace Walker at all either, and I see where you're coming from but ultimately don't agree.
His neurotic, resource management-heavy gameplay in every game he released after Peace Walker was actually done really well in my eyes. The boss fights in V were admittedly nothing to write home about, but I liked everything else, even all of the cassette tapes and emails.

>Millennials and zoomers are largely incapable of creating good art because they’re losers who don’t have any life experiences to draw from. Only media they’ve consumed.
I didn't use to think this was true, until you started seeing all these games where the entire plot or text is about depression or about identity. If I'm being honest, it's the only ideas that come to mind when trying to come up with creative ideas myself that ring "true", made worse by the fact that I'm now consuming things made by people with the same lack of life experience, so the influence from real life and the content is the same.

Iterating on a genre by being in conversation with it is important to bring something new, as long as it doesn't devolve into subversion for subversion's sake, but it should probably be combined with your own unique life experiences outside of it to truly make it good.

The technical side is for the technical workers, not for directors. Kojima does not need to know shit about DLSS or FSR, there are people in charge of that. If we talk about innovation in mechanics it might be even better if he doesn't play other stuff, as a lot of devs end up copying other games instead of coming up with new stuff, like Kojima did in Death Stranding.
As for David Lynch yeah, he watched a lot of movies before being a huge director, and Tarantino still watches a lot of movies, and even Kojima watches movies, but there's a point when you have enough knowledge and culture and "watching more" does not add any meaningful change. David Lynch wouldn't have made better movies if he had watched 20 more movies, for example he made Inland Empire which is quite similar to Perfect Blue but he did NOT watch Perfect Blue, if he had seen it maybe he wouldn't have made the movie at all

Thank you

I see this time and again with these homage indie games trying to emulate what they liked as a kid and it often winds up being an autistic speedrunner's version of the game they loved as a kid, unable to grasp that not everyone is going to enjoy playing the game like this. If there's an unintended mechanic of their inspiration that broke said game originally often this will become the core gameplay mechanic of their game and require autistic perfection to even finish the game and it's fun for like maybe two people. They don't realise just how rigourously tested and studied these games were to provide a fun experience for everyone. As you said, it's not experts getting into game development, it's fans and this is the result. It's basically fanfic writers publishing their own novels
>>
>>719395379
Yes dumbass they should, no wonder why he makes garbage
>>
>>719395379
They should do whatever the fuck they want as long as they make good fucking games. If they spend 2 years in a drug fueled self discovery journey and make Bloodborne idgaf. The problem here is when the game is an afterthought and they really want to do something else (movies, propaganda, just make money, etc). A lot of movie games are just Hollywood reject desperately trying to get in. Kojima was always a videogame developer that wants to get into Hollywood but he loves games as a media and knows how they work. Druckmann and the like don't even bother to know how they work because for them it's an inferior form of media for inferior life forms and it shows. Asuras Wrath is a movie game, a Shonen one at that, and it was great.
>>
Nobody should play games its time wasted when you could be working and earning
