I really thought Crysis would become the standard of video games by 8th gen. Instead it's just a lone wolf.

Another thing that Webm reminds me of is explosions: no fucking game seems to do them right anymore. Look how god damn good they look here. I remember being blown away by how good the explosions looked in Saints Row back then as well. Hell even compared Halo 3 phantoms exploding to Infinite. What the fuck happened to the industry. It's like everyone collectively stopped trying.

There's a thing in the uncharted games, 2 and 3, I think, where they somehow load in a massively higher res texture for whatever you're aiming at without time for the player to notice anything's changed. Meanwhile UE5 can't even load things in time for a cutscene.

See the problem there, right?
It´s that they try to force early stage tecnology into everything. And the rules of nature dictates that any force applied will find a force applied in the opposite direction.
Its unfair to "hate" (pointing out is shit is not hate) it when there is proofs everywhere that is a shitty tecnology (at the moment)?

>So did PhysX, which is why everyone hated it. People started liking PhysX years down the line when they had GPUs several generations ahead of the technology.
People hated PhysX for the same reason people hate DLSS/RTX.
It's a Nvidia exclusive technology shoved into games where it doesn't belong as a dumbass industry market share battle, and for the frames it eats it doesn't remotely improve visuals enough.

I think its more like board member gaslighting through journalist to say things like you do, so they can make more profit through a streamlined content creation process and lower expectations for their products, industry wide. Why compete when its cheaper to all be the same and leave consumers no choice? You see this in design philosophy in cars, homes, food, fashion, tech, etc. Its risky to be different, hence the term "corporate slop". There is a reason for big publishers buying out developers to only kill their IP. Creativity is expensive.
>>
>>719399506

Enshrouded is apparently getting proper water physics in a patch soon, it looks neat I guess but the game itself still feels more like a Minecraft autism builder than proper game, sure the building system is really good and having actual water with physics is cool too but ultimately the game will still be a bit boring to me until they manage to make combat actually good.

You're a Fromdrone because you immediately try to pretend that their mechanically shit game has something that it objectively doesn't have on any level. You don't play video games. You don't know what destruction physics for trees is in Crysis, but you decided that sometimes trees break in Elden Ring so it was an apt comparison. You're a fucking retard and you don't know what you're talking about. You can have another reply when you learn what destruction physics actually are. And again, no amount of getting mad and pretend this is some subjective thing will change what destruction physics means.

>I think it's underappreciated by those that rag on it
RDR2 is just ruined by a lot of the story elements that are very obviously left wing propaganda
>Sadie is a histrionic girl boss that cant do anything wrong
>Arther is the most soft willed man in the time period, being ok with women voting and hating eugenics
>Rockstar writing native American problems as "just white men trying to make natives look bad"
>ect
If most of this stuff was removed, im sure a lot of these people would love the game, it just that when you have inconsistencies caused by propaganda, it becomes very grating. A perfect example is Karen, she is a well written female gang member, she uses her feminine charms to get an advantage over men for the gang. Put a character as well written as that next to Sadie and you have clashing narratives, why doesnt Karen just become an overly emotional murderer like Sadie who hasnt even shot a gun or killed people until the gang found her but is somehow so dangerous even the gang members are scared of her? Theres too much of that kind of narrative clash that it takes the player who isnt turning off their brain out of the experience and it just becomes tiring to sit though. The gameplay is fun, the exploration is fun but the story elements are rough for sure.

fake problem. water under the map will be rejected by the pixel shader because it's transparent, so it renders after the ground has already filled the depth buffer.
the pixel shader of the water needs to be cheap enough that we can cover the whole screen with water surface. when it aborts early because of depth that will be cheaper. so water under the map is one of the better cases. water on top of the map is the worst case. that's where we have to optimize.

no, anon, I actually know what I'm talking about and it's not my fault that you don't.

>overtesselate the fuck out of everything with no visual benefit
this might have been a dirty trick sponsored by nvidia. unlike the water thing. another clarification:
>water with no LOD
tesselation literally is a form of LOD. you let the GPU generate more triangles closer to the camera. in some ways it's the perfect form of LOD, a seamless decrease in resolution over distance. but of course if the resolution chosen is uniformly too high that's going to handicap whatever GPU is weaker at tesselation. and if that was AMD's GPUs at the time and nvidia was a sponsor for Crysis 2 then it is suspicious, and predictable as Crytek always did shady shit like this.
Crysis 2 at launch ran very well on AMD GPUs by the way, I was playing it on a 5850. it was only the DX11 update around a year after launch that introduced tesselation. the launch version ran on DX9. tesselation only existed since DX10 so it's 100% confirmed that launch Crysis 2 had no tesselation.
>>
>>719411775
*unlike the water UNDER THE MAP thing
to be specific
not culling the water was NOT part of some conspiracy. and as far as the pixel shader was concerned the water WAS culled any way, by depth.

PhysX was neat, but there was nothing it could do that later versions of Havok couldn't - the thing is that at the time (2009-2015ish), CPU's were barely using more than one thread for games, or anything really, and Intel was still cruising off of single-threaded performance, so for an extemely CPU-based physics solution to produce Nvidia results, that's a lot of load on the CPU when you also want it to do game shit. Turning the Geforce into a PPU was seen as a way to free the CPU for vidya stuff while the GPU had it's own physics solution, assuming your Geforce had a 70 or 80 in it's name

The fact it was proprietary meant that affected games unfortunately had ultra basic CPU-PhysX if they were on an AMD card, so it was kinda bullshit for actual aesthetics to be vendor locked, and I consider all of the Batman games with full-PhysX on to be worth using an Nvidia card on them, assuming it isn't a 5000-series lmao. AMD/ATI was also still competent then, so a lot of people were voluntarily buying Radeons and missing a cool experience. Were I to point to PhysX's biggest bullshit, it's probably this, that and being x87

The most retarded thing is that a Cuda-to-OpenCL wrapper could've easily given AMD access to PhysX too, and one was in development by the guy who made the hybrid PhysX mod as a stopgap for AMD citizens that wanted to slap an eBay 8800GT alongside their Radeon to make it work like an Ageia card. Nvidia was all for the idea, AMD wasn't, and after an extremely private beta Regeneration dropped off the face of the earth, possibly bought-out or C&D'd by AMD, as they've done this to a couple other modders in the past

Same reason they did it in Duke Nukem. Programming actual mirrors is super fucking hard and can also be incredibly resource intensive, especially in those days (this game is 13 years old). wow man that's so difficult! it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to set the system up and you can replicate it everywhere and doesn't impact performance. I can barely code anything and didn't even need to ask chatgpt to come up with a simple solution.

If they wanted an actual reflection, they'd need processing power and also a lot of time and finnicking to make sure the reflection actually works and the player sees the slice of the sheriff they want you to see. The reflection itself would be worthless if it didn't show the cop's reaction to your answers or where he's looking as he's driving/when he crashes.
Instead they can show you exactly what they want you to see with no fuss with just a bit of finesse.

Raytracing won't. Raytracing is a staple of all 3D rendering (except videogames up until a few years ago) and has been a desired goal since 3D became a thing. Raytracing will be a mainstay.
As for upscaling and framegen, it's hard to say. Frame gen might die, I think upscaling will always live on because the higher res you are the better upscaling is. If we assume in the future that we'll move to 4k and 8k, upscaling will only become more prominent.

>lost technologies
These are not lost technologies
White people are behind all these game engines and technologies. White people left the industry or retired. The people who replaced them simply cannot operate on the same level, can't maintain the engine (see CD Projekt RED), can't replicate it and are incapable of understanding the engineering behind that made all this possible even on hardware several times weaker than what we have now.
This is the reason why Unreal Engine become so prevalent. Indians, chineses, women and diversity hired individuals need a "the sims" like game engine to be able to build a game (a house). This being just an analogy.

Nice.
And even the shadows are being reasonably drawn at that distance. It pisses me right the fuck off when I'm playing an open-world game, and locations look completely flat and unnatural from afar because the shadows are not being drawn in.

I think as a simulation it is extremely impressive, detailed and complete, but that this doesn't necessarily make it the most fun game to actually play.
>>
>>719438720
That's not lost (well, most things ITT aren't), a lot of companies are just kidna lazy about this kind of thing.
>>
>>719438861
Without a real gameplay reason for it, its also not worth it when 99% of people aren't noticing or caring. Do people in MGSV limp like MGS2, its been 10 years but I honestly don't remember the AI reinforcements clearing rooms like MGS2 nor having some of the more nuanced interactions like limping.

>>719413083
Some retards think of video games completely backwards and are bizarrely overconcerned with what is "actually" happening technically compared to what is being presented on screen. And worse, that it only matters if it's some sort of "real" simulation under the hood. There's no real, all games are just fakery to entertain a player. What's being presented is what should always matter most to the player, and whether or not it is convincing. If it is, then it works. That's it.

So it's lost. On purpose.

It's still around. Many games since have featured these things. You won't find it in cawadooty probably, but they are there.

Behavioral trees, fuzzy logic, if-else trees, etc, yeah. Not exactly a problem you need true AI for.
Usually the main thing to solve is to construct the behavior in a way that it doesn't seem like the boss has extremely canned behaviors (always does x when y), or that it doesn't look like the boss is input reading (reacts instantly to a button being pressed by the player). Then again, plenty games use extremely gameistic boss patterns, so it's not like it's an entirely undesired outcome, just depends on the game design.

This is an ape brained addition, that wasn't a reflection, it was the room rendered twice and one playing the animations backwards, this can't be done on a modern game because the particle effects wouldn't be rendered twice and would look bad
>>
>>719411748
because gamers dont actually give a fuck

>>719398237
This is extremely reductive but the answer is basically until the 2010s computers weren't understood well enough by the bean counters to be stripped of all excess and brought down to minimum viable product. The engineers and artists were able to control some degree of quality. Same thing with VFX, we have those amazing Pirates of the Caribbean clips and then a few years later Marvel movies look like cartoons.

Haven't thought about it since the ps3/early 4 era.

Is bloom still used in games? Did tech advance enough + everyone simply get sick of the effect? I imagine raytracing tech killed it fully but my memory is fuzzy.
