post lost technologies
i don't think such a thing exists when it comes to video games
>>719396493is this real? when did mechs use to exist?
>>719396823Wait, in the last clip, why is the hud showing a shotgun yet Frank is actually holding a knife?

>>719397264ki...kino
>>719397264the only devs that are given time to do stuff like this are rockstarstandards are fucking so low nowadays that running at a solid 30 FPS stands out
>>719397516im scared bros...
>>719396493ON looks better
>>719398080I really thought Crysis would become the standard of video games by 8th gen. Instead it's just a lone wolf.Another thing that Webm reminds me of is explosions: no fucking game seems to do them right anymore. Look how god damn good they look here. I remember being blown away by how good the explosions looked in Saints Row back then as well. Hell even compared Halo 3 phantoms exploding to Infinite. What the fuck happened to the industry. It's like everyone collectively stopped trying.
>>719397516the wii version is based off of RE4
>>719398080i don't see anything technologically unique, it's just very good presentation(replayed OG Crysis and Warhead last month btw, amazing games)
tech peaked here, still the most beautiful game ever made
>>719396493There's a thing in the uncharted games, 2 and 3, I think, where they somehow load in a massively higher res texture for whatever you're aiming at without time for the player to notice anything's changed. Meanwhile UE5 can't even load things in time for a cutscene.
>>719398263crysis has the tree destruction that i don't see in any other games
>>719398080Graphics have stayed the exact same since 2007.

>>719396823what do reflections have to do with ram?
>>719398237Most vfx artists these days are brown retards
>>719398263OG Crysis has some of the most advanced vegetation in any video game. It was immediately taken out with the standalone expansion Warhead and then never came back.
>>719398453I think this was the original hawken? No, it's not worth playing now, and wasn't then either.
>>719398484you would expect memory usage to go up when rendering reflections because it has to store a separate video feed of what the mirror would see
>>719398263It´s not lost tecnologies per se, but lost use. All that shit can be done today, but they instead they chose to do some quick trick and call it a day.
>>719396493>causes a bunch of graphical glitchesYeah turn all this shit off.
>>719398080Which crysis is this?
>>7193988341, obviously. Crysis 2 and 3 are urban enviroments.
>>719398097Last time I remember noticing anything like this was the CoD4 remaster with the barrels.>shoot a barrel>it drains from the bullet hole then stops>shooting below the previous hole will cause it to drain some more>shooting higher than the previous hole won't cause it to drain>the length of time it drains depends on how low the hole is on the barrel and the number of holes

>>719396493>Hawkinwhat went wrong?
>>719399157That's why Daddy Elon is working on getting people used to thinking shitty CGI is real
>>719399141which is why modern games are so much better and more tightly focused... right?
>>719398237i can't believe retards still dismiss it as a tech demoIt's got so much stuff that one-ups every shooter that came before it: the phyics, the destructability, the all-ballistic weapons, the customization, the MMB suit controls, the whole "wide linear" level design, the AI, you can name it.Crysis is what Star Citizen is advertising itself to be, only it was released after 3 years of development.
>>719398237i remember Post Scriptum having badass explosionsalso now i want to play Crysis/Crysis Warhead
>>719397264>look how hard I can piss

>>719396493I dont understand why they abandoned this shit. It was so fucking cool and made games way more satisfying to play
>>719399370yep it's really mind boggling. i remember even back when I had a potato piece of shit that could barely run it at 720p and 30fps I still found the game to be fun as hell just based on its open level design and interactive AI. Plus the set pieces from that webm mission plus the one just before it were fucking awesome. game really does go to shit post-aliens but oh well. The modding scene back then was glorious too. So many awesome mission mods and full-length custom campaigns on crymods. I don't think the site exists anymore which is a shame.
>>719399506Them disabling it for Planetside 2 made me unironically uninstall. Battles completely lost their flair.
>>719399141>too much time
>>719396493Every game has useless cosmetic particle effects now though
>>719399075All that extra time? Spent trying to wrangle the countless outsourced asset farms, having to re-re-re-re-re-recheck everything, "corporate culture" executives having a dozen meetings per day instead of letting devs make shit.
>>719399506They didn't have their datacenter/AI infinite money glitch working yet so they couldn't throw hundreds of millions into forcing devs to use they tech in their games or to endlessly shilling it like ray tracing
>>719396493you can easily do far more elaborate stuff even in unreal 4 for a fraction of the cost of the old physx. it's actually kind of annoying how so many games have a billion particles at all times because they're practically free to use in terms of performance.
>>719399780Niagra is just as ugly and tacky.I hate unreal particles.

>>719400913darn. that game engine is some cool stuff. i guess i would retire too if i made a successful game, though.
>>719399141>Shit like this takes too much time and effort and 99% of players ignore it or don't care.we literally live in a vidya hellscape because every game looks the samedo you think anyone will post a webm someday of something in a modern triple AAA game like the current Assasin's creed?
>>719399506>I dont understand why they abandoned this shit. It was so fucking cool and made games way more satisfying to playBecause hordes of niggers online screeched about it killing gaming and being anti-consumer, just like they're doing now with DLSS and raytracing.
>>719401667Seethe more retard. DLSS is fake resolution, while raytracing tanks the performance like a fucking bomb.
>>719401878DLSS is unironically basedbetter image quality than native at 1440p
>>719400987SEX
>>719401981For anti-aliasing alone it's pretty good. Shame about the temporal artifacts though.
>>719401981>better image quality than native at 1440pPutting a sharpness filter over everything is not better quality.
>>719399506it only worked with a small range of GPUs that had the physix PPU and it was optimized like shit for CPU operations on purposethen no one bothered to write an equivalent
>>719401878>while raytracing tanks the performance like a fucking bomb.So did PhysX, which is why everyone hated it. People started liking PhysX years down the line when they had GPUs several generations ahead of the technology.>>719402110>Putting a sharpness filter over everything is not better quality.Correct, which is why you can compare DLSS vs standard antialiasing + sharpening filter, and see that DLSS produces better image quality.
>>719402057There have been a couple recent games I've been surprised how good it looks and isn't blurry in motion. The BF6 beta was one of them, looked great although it didn't really give me any extra frames playing at 1440p max settings comparing native with no AA vs DLSS quality but it looked much better>>719402110shut the fuck up retard
>>719402214The reason people say BF6 looks good is because it has an ungodly amount of sharpening on by default. Just like nuBF2.
>>719398412Elden Ring and Battlefield have that feature. It's not as smooth though.
>>719396823Dead Rising had such a fun engine. Was that the fox engine or something different?

i love current game graphics because it's like the most obvious tell for how to differentiate a good artist from a bad one which is stylei wouldn't be surprised if modern teams are just pajeets thinking 4K TEXTURE BETTER THAN 2K TEXTURE SAAR I DID MY JOB and they just put the file in an upscaling thing and call it a day, modern devs would never think of doing anything resembling >>719397264

>>719402209>So did PhysX, which is why everyone hated it. People started liking PhysX years down the line when they had GPUs several generations ahead of the technologySee the problem there, right? It´s that they try to force early stage tecnology into everything. And the rules of nature dictates that any force applied will find a force applied in the opposite direction. Its unfair to "hate" (pointing out is shit is not hate) it when there is proofs everywhere that is a shitty tecnology (at the moment)?
>>719402209>So did PhysX, which is why everyone hated it. People started liking PhysX years down the line when they had GPUs several generations ahead of the technology.People hated PhysX for the same reason people hate DLSS/RTX.It's a Nvidia exclusive technology shoved into games where it doesn't belong as a dumbass industry market share battle, and for the frames it eats it doesn't remotely improve visuals enough.OH MY GOD WOW METRO LAST LIGHT NOW HAS HEAPS OF DUMBASS CUBE PARTICLES FROM EXPLOSIONS!THIS TOTALLY DESERVES ALL MY FRAMES!
>>719402758That´s not lost, that´s thrown away.

>>719404640>22 million dollarybucksThat's not even enough money to pay for our marketing campaigns. It's impossible to make a game with that little of a budget.
>>719399525the post-alien part is very, very short, i just replayed the game
>>719403826How is that "lost"? The only reason games utilize PhysX because it was literally equivalent to toggling a flag and NVIDIA does most of the work through their SDK because it was there new meme feature. It's no magic you can implement it yourself.
>>719399506Isn't PhysX an actual physics engine now?
>>719402445>Elden Ring>any kind of vegetation destruction physics>any destruction physics at all except for tables and shit that play a baked shatter animation and then immediately disappearWhat?
>>719399141I think its more like board member gaslighting through journalist to say things like you do, so they can make more profit through a streamlined content creation process and lower expectations for their products, industry wide. Why compete when its cheaper to all be the same and leave consumers no choice? You see this in design philosophy in cars, homes, food, fashion, tech, etc. Its risky to be different, hence the term "corporate slop". There is a reason for big publishers buying out developers to only kill their IP. Creativity is expensive.
>>719399506The problem was that it raped performance and really added that much. I really liked it in Mirror's Edge for the cloth-like physics and the fog in BamHam games. But that's mostly it. 90% of the time you just got a gorillion of random debris and random pieces of paper flying around. Paper was fucking everywhere. It sucked.

>>719403884the GTA definitive edition was essentially 90% Indians just subdividing models in blender and AI upscaling textures
>>719405129>and it didn't give me dolphin pornHard drawback
Reminder that SLI never died, Big GPU just cut support and memory-holed it because they realized people could get high range performance at a fraction of the cost without needing to buy the newest cards. If you're willing to dive into the darkweb SLI support is alive and well, with homebrew drivers. But /v/ isn't ready for that discussion just yet.
>>719401878Checkerboard rendering with things like TAA is also fake resolution. Most AA solutions are fake resolution. Use MSAA and see how it compares performance wise if you dont want jaggies/ghosting at your 1080p resolution.
>>719405259SLI was the usual Nvidia jewish snake oil saleman nonsense.>Oy vey goyim, give us TWICE the money for 30% more performance! What a bargain! Sure it barely works on most games and once we drop support it won't work at all>But GIVE US MORE MONEY!
>>719399595ah, so they started development in 2021
>>719405259lmao nigger what, sli offers tremendous diminishing returns
>>719398080>Crysis is nearly 20 years old
>>719398383>Meanwhile UE5 can't even load things in time for a cutscene. It's UE4 but man, there's a cutscene in Days Gone where a big explosion happens and it was fucking a 2x2 texture until it was almost done fading away and it pissed me off so much. I hate Unreal Engine.
>>719404886Bosses can knock down trees and destroy like half of a church's structure. You can see this easily whenever you encounter a runebear or if you lure the tree sentinel at the start near the church.
>>719405732What game?
>>719397264That's not really lost and it's likely not really simulating liquid. Something similar exists in gta 5 and RDR2. It's a great detail but not something enitrely of the past.
>>719405886Do you have any fucking idea what the tree destruction physics in Crysis look like or what anon was talking about how good they are? Of course you don't. You're a Fromdrone, and that means you don't know shit about video games.
>>719398080Legit looks better in almost every way than modern games.
>>719406008Hydrophobia. Used it's own custom physics engine for water. Similar to the nvidia physx water demos.
>>719405732Is this game any good or is it only remembered for the gimmick?
>>719398834One. And this is the last open and sandboxy level in the whole game. The last third is complete dogshit.
>>719402685Except rockstar. Say what you want about the company (they are terrible), and their priorities. They polish their games very well.
>>719406263The game isn't very good, just showcases unique/rare technology.
>>719403334Why don't they just reset to their initial state after the first shot? What's the advantage of coding them to only blow once?
Look if it can't be written into a user story by our "business analyst" that actively hates games, it's not going to the "delivery center" to be worked on.and even it becomes a "ticket" in our "Agile workflow". The planning is so mismanaged and it's not part of the mvp be so it'll still never be worked on.but hey, Agile forced all our developers to equally shit.
In an alternate universe cryengine would have won and we would have been spared all the terrible unreal smear games. I want off of this timeline.
>>719406153You stupid fucking nigger brained retard. You doubted there were any destruction physics I just pointed out how there were some. I'm not saying it's comperable to crysis in any way you absolute fucking retard. Getting so agressive over a reply that answers your query, you truly must be some fucking subhuman reject.
>>719406358Rockstar, Ubisoft and EA all have great artists and technical talent that can create phenomenally good looking games that run reasonably well. Too bad they have to ruin their games in other ways and don't put that talent to good use.
>>719407218Yep. Legitimate shame. (I actually happen to have really liked RDR2 though, I think it's underappreciated by those that rag on it).
>>719398286I remember being really impressed by how clouds would occasionally cover up the sun and change the lighting.
>>719407152>You doubted there were any destruction physics>physicsAn object breaking and immediately losing any collision is has is just an animation playing. They aren't physics objects, you stupid fucking cocksucking Fromdrone nigger. You don't get to redefine words because you got upset that someone pointed out what an ignorant monkey you are. Now skip the part where you try damage controlling and explaining how those are still destruction physics even though you're literally (not metaphorically) too fucking stupid to understand what physics are.
>>719396493That's not PhysX, that's turning UE4 particles on or off.
Enshrouded is apparently getting proper water physics in a patch soon, it looks neat I guess but the game itself still feels more like a Minecraft autism builder than proper game, sure the building system is really good and having actual water with physics is cool too but ultimately the game will still be a bit boring to me until they manage to make combat actually good.
>>719407684I JUST FUCKING POINTED OUT SOMETHING YOU WERE QUESTIONING YOU FUCKING FAGGOTI'm sorry it doesn't fit your specifications of what the feature should include. It doesn't add anything significant to the game it's just completely visual. >>719407402The shit RDR2 gets on /v/ is by either one of two groups. Retards who call it a movie game and are just parroting terms they don't understand. And disengenious /pol/tard who think that because Arthur doesn't say nigger every sentence or rape the girls in the camp the game is woke
>>719408726>I'm sorry it doesn't fit your specifications>your specificationsNope. I'm not going to entertain this. You don't play video games. You don't know what destruction physics for trees is in Crysis, but you decided that sometimes trees break in Elden Ring so it was an apt comparison. You're a fucking retard and you don't know what you're talking about. You can have another reply when you learn what destruction physics actually are. And again, no amount of getting mad and pretend this is some subjective thing will change what destruction physics means.
>>719396493yakuza 6 has similar GPU particles. thsi is nothing new at this point just lost the nvidia branding. the even open sourced that shit.
>>719407402>I think it's underappreciated by those that rag on itRDR2 is just ruined by a lot of the story elements that are very obviously left wing propaganda>Sadie is a histrionic girl boss that cant do anything wrong>Arther is the most soft willed man in the time period, being ok with women voting and hating eugenics>Rockstar writing native American problems as "just white men trying to make natives look bad">ectIf most of this stuff was removed, im sure a lot of these people would love the game, it just that when you have inconsistencies caused by propaganda, it becomes very grating. A perfect example is Karen, she is a well written female gang member, she uses her feminine charms to get an advantage over men for the gang. Put a character as well written as that next to Sadie and you have clashing narratives, why doesnt Karen just become an overly emotional murderer like Sadie who hasnt even shot a gun or killed people until the gang found her but is somehow so dangerous even the gang members are scared of her? Theres too much of that kind of narrative clash that it takes the player who isnt turning off their brain out of the experience and it just becomes tiring to sit though. The gameplay is fun, the exploration is fun but the story elements are rough for sure.
>>719396493Ah yes, the yellow piss filter. Truly lost technology.

>>719410324>undermap waterfake problem. water under the map will be rejected by the pixel shader because it's transparent, so it renders after the ground has already filled the depth buffer.the pixel shader of the water needs to be cheap enough that we can cover the whole screen with water surface. when it aborts early because of depth that will be cheaper. so water under the map is one of the better cases. water on top of the map is the worst case. that's where we have to optimize.

>>719411262>incoherent rambling nonsense trying to sound smartno, anon, I actually know what I'm talking about and it's not my fault that you don't.>overtesselate the fuck out of everything with no visual benefitthis might have been a dirty trick sponsored by nvidia. unlike the water thing. another clarification:>water with no LODtesselation literally is a form of LOD. you let the GPU generate more triangles closer to the camera. in some ways it's the perfect form of LOD, a seamless decrease in resolution over distance. but of course if the resolution chosen is uniformly too high that's going to handicap whatever GPU is weaker at tesselation. and if that was AMD's GPUs at the time and nvidia was a sponsor for Crysis 2 then it is suspicious, and predictable as Crytek always did shady shit like this.Crysis 2 at launch ran very well on AMD GPUs by the way, I was playing it on a 5850. it was only the DX11 update around a year after launch that introduced tesselation. the launch version ran on DX9. tesselation only existed since DX10 so it's 100% confirmed that launch Crysis 2 had no tesselation.

>>719397264that's just retarded, the whole thing should crack
>>719409960PhysX was neat, but there was nothing it could do that later versions of Havok couldn't - the thing is that at the time (2009-2015ish), CPU's were barely using more than one thread for games, or anything really, and Intel was still cruising off of single-threaded performance, so for an extemely CPU-based physics solution to produce Nvidia results, that's a lot of load on the CPU when you also want it to do game shit. Turning the Geforce into a PPU was seen as a way to free the CPU for vidya stuff while the GPU had it's own physics solution, assuming your Geforce had a 70 or 80 in it's nameThe fact it was proprietary meant that affected games unfortunately had ultra basic CPU-PhysX if they were on an AMD card, so it was kinda bullshit for actual aesthetics to be vendor locked, and I consider all of the Batman games with full-PhysX on to be worth using an Nvidia card on them, assuming it isn't a 5000-series lmao. AMD/ATI was also still competent then, so a lot of people were voluntarily buying Radeons and missing a cool experience. Were I to point to PhysX's biggest bullshit, it's probably this, that and being x87The most retarded thing is that a Cuda-to-OpenCL wrapper could've easily given AMD access to PhysX too, and one was in development by the guy who made the hybrid PhysX mod as a stopgap for AMD citizens that wanted to slap an eBay 8800GT alongside their Radeon to make it work like an Ageia card. Nvidia was all for the idea, AMD wasn't, and after an extremely private beta Regeneration dropped off the face of the earth, possibly bought-out or C&D'd by AMD, as they've done this to a couple other modders in the pasthttps://web.archive.org/web/20160323093516/http://www.ngohq.com/news/14254-physx-gpu-acceleration-on-radeon-update.htmlHilbert (Guru3d) once saw him online in the mod CP years later and PM'd him 'hey where the fuck have you been?' and never got a response, shit sucks

>>719398237>It's like everyone collectively stopped trying. They leaved industry lol. Modern game dev industry is full of newbies who jump from studio to studio on contracts. Talented designers and engineers simply fucked off after seeing writing on the wall in 2014 and later. Go look up how old are people responsible for priopertiary engines in Sony Santa Monica and other studios. Reminder that Frostbite engine team at EA makes more than management inside these studios because EA was that desperate to keep those people in.

White people left the industry or retired. The people who replaced them simply cannot operate on the same level, can't maintain the engine (see CD Projekt RED), can't replicate it and are incapable of understanding the engineering behind that made all this possible even on hardware several times weaker than what we have now. This is the reason why Unreal Engine become so prevalent. Indians, chineses, women and diversity hired individuals need a "the sims" like game engine to be able to build a game (a house). This being just an analogy.

>>719438720That's not lost (well, most things ITT aren't), a lot of companies are just kidna lazy about this kind of thing.
>>719438861Without a real gameplay reason for it, its also not worth it when 99% of people aren't noticing or caring. Do people in MGSV limp like MGS2, its been 10 years but I honestly don't remember the AI reinforcements clearing rooms like MGS2 nor having some of the more nuanced interactions like limping.
>>719413083Some retards think of video games completely backwards and are bizarrely overconcerned with what is "actually" happening technically compared to what is being presented on screen. And worse, that it only matters if it's some sort of "real" simulation under the hood. There's no real, all games are just fakery to entertain a player. What's being presented is what should always matter most to the player, and whether or not it is convincing. If it is, then it works. That's it.

>>719437853Behavioral trees, fuzzy logic, if-else trees, etc, yeah. Not exactly a problem you need true AI for.Usually the main thing to solve is to construct the behavior in a way that it doesn't seem like the boss has extremely canned behaviors (always does x when y), or that it doesn't look like the boss is input reading (reacts instantly to a button being pressed by the player). Then again, plenty games use extremely gameistic boss patterns, so it's not like it's an entirely undesired outcome, just depends on the game design.

>>719398237This is extremely reductive but the answer is basically until the 2010s computers weren't understood well enough by the bean counters to be stripped of all excess and brought down to minimum viable product. Same thing with VFX, we have those amazing Pirates of the Caribbean clips and then a few years later Marvel movies look like cartoons.
