I remember when Valve first released Steam, everybody hated it. Before Steam, to play CS or whatever, all you had to do was launch the game client and go to online play and there would be a message like "connecting to WON network", and the server browser was built into the client. You just picked your server and played. There was no hassle or issue with this. You didn't need third party tools. Everything just worked in the game client.

Then, Valve released steam and took away the server browsers in the client. There was outrage. People hated Steam. So now you suddenly had to install a third party program into your computer. Mind you, your resources back then were very limited. People were running like 256MB of RAM for high end systems and this was in the single core days so computers didn't handle multi tasking well. If you were doing something intensive it was best to not have other programs open and running. So Steam ate into your valuable scarce resources. Unnecessary programs taking up additional resources was not a joke back then and it was something to be taken seriously.

But then things changed, around 2010 Steam not longer had the hate for it that it once had. Then, more and more people began to love Steam. A lot of people will go to get lengths to defend or praise Steam. Some people seem like they wouldn't hesistate to defend Steam with their life.

Early Steam with VGUI barely ate any resources, especially compared to other DRMs that could even cuck your OS.
>>
I remember buying condition zero but not playing it as I didn't want to install steam, can't remember the reason for it tough
>>
yeah because they started giving me reasonably large discounts for video games

Funny how only valve seems to get away with it all.
Every other corpo had endless hate thrown towards them for less and never recovered.
Yet valve managed to be worshipped for 15 years straight no matter how jewish they were.
Proof that truth doesn't matter, only jewtuber pushed popular opinion matters.

Meds?

I used Steam since 2005 but I have no preference for game launchers. I have more time than money so I don’t mind managing 10+ different launchers. I don’t get the hype about Steam either but I’m too old. I still keep my account from 2005 it’s 20 years old now soon it’ll be like 80 years old.

I only remember using this program that had a green icon of like some dude in a fedora and crosshairs to find multiplayer matches. I forget what it was called but it was based.

That's the one. Why did we stop using it? Look at the SOUL

It worked like shit. I remember using it to play MechCommander and everyone jumped ship the moment even a marginally more reliable service appeared.

Lies, shut up steamie. Owning 2GB of RAM is the current equivalent of owning RTX 5090.

Then did the corporate thing and back track the discount. Stop leaving behind context that hurt gamers.
