What goes wrong with it is Arthas's reasoning for it. This is at a point in the story where there is no proof it cannot be cured yet so he jumps to purging on his own and acts uppity when he isn't instantly agreed with. In the end, it didn't matter who or what he saved with this because he went on to become undead and destroy the kingdom anyway.
